“Homely Stay at Fairy no Mori”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

I stayed with my friend for 4 nights. It is a lovely place, run by a lovely couple who were from Tokyo. All of their cottages faced the sea and it was an enjoyable experience to have our breakfast on the deck, overlooking the sea. The place is so well kept and clean. It gives me a very homely feeling. There are fresh flowers daily. The breakfast is delicious. On days when we need to start our trek early, the owners will prepare onigiri (rice balls) as breakfast for us to eat on our hikes. They even provide dryer for drying our hiking boots. You have lots of privacy by having your own cottage space. I will definitely stay there again when I visit Yakushima. I sure miss Fairy no Mori and the sumptuous breakfast...

these four cottages facing the ocean are so charming and comfortable. the owners are extremely hospitable and their care for the property really shows. there were fresh flowers from the home garden changed every day throughout the cottage. on the 2nd day the coffee table was switched out with one of the husband's.table creations. the cottage comes supplied with all toiletries, slippers, cooking and serving ware, comfy down comforters, a small fridge, wifi and some instant ramen if you aren't able to get your own. there's even a shower basket with shampoo and soap to tote over to the onsen. windows on three sides let in great light and a nice breeze. bfast on the deck was a treat. the cottage and the entire island are so lovely and relaxing. upon return to from a day of sightseeing, the wife greets you with an afternoon refreshment--guava smoothie, herbal jelly, fresh cut fruits etc. most tour companies can pick you up from the cottage. a car is useful if you're not doing a guided tour, to see some beautiful nature and visit the fruit markets etc. the cottage is pretty quiet except for the public announcements and fur elise that plays at 6am. i also unfortunately had cheery neighbors couple of the nights and i could hear them from next door and while they got ready for an early morning hike at 3:30am. besides them, my stay was fabulous, relaxing, very memorable.

I stayed here with my fiancee for 2 nights. It's a lovely place, run by a very friendly married couple. They have a total of 4 cottages, all of which were occupied during our visit (so book soon if you're going to!). The location, while away from many of the attractions on the north part of the island, is easily reached by car. If you're going to stay here, you really do need to rent a car (though I would recommend doing that if possible anyway, regardless of where you stay on Yakushima).

Anyway, it's a beautiful place and you can look out on the ocean from your balcony! The cottages themselves are made from cedar, and the nice cedar smell is noticeable. Very spacious as well.

We also opted to have their breakfast each morning, which was a great decision. Absolutely delicious hand-made course after course, for a very reasonable price.

We spoke in Japanese, so I can't comment on how difficult it might be to stay here using only English, however they did mention that they have had foreign guests before...so probably worth a try!

Really, nothing to complain about. Highly recommended!
