“Had high expectations, and was not disappointed”

If you feel the need for a traditional onsen ryokan experience, but are travelling solo in Kyushu, this might be the place for you. It is almost buried in a wooded valley a little way from Kurokawa Onsen town. The ryokan is a little tricky to get to by public transport - I booked a seat on a bus from Yufuin and was picked up from the bus stop by the ryokan's shuttle service - but the effort to get there makes the stay at the ryokan all the more pleasurable. The shared baths were excellent - both the indoor and outdoor options, and the meals were delicious and filling as well as beautifully presented. I think that the experience was definitely well worth the money spent.

The good lady & myself are frequent travellers to Japan. Each time we go we try a different theme such as hiking, soba making, cycling, camping or what ever. This time around it was Onsen or hot spa baths. We've enjoyed the occasional Japanese Onsen before but this time we wanted to really 'go for it' by getting way off the beaten track and immersing ourselves in the baths & the entire cultural experience that surrounds it.

For us Sanga was the perfect choice and about as traditional as it's possible to get. From the rooms, to the food, to the staff, to the wonderful Onsens, Ryokan Sanga delivered a top shelf experience that was my best experience in Japan ever. Our 3 days there allowed us to completely recharge our batteries before heading off to Fukuoka & Tokyo for other business.

In fact I've been raving about it to my Japanese pals from Southern Kyushu and we now plan to all go there together next time around.

Room Tip: * Stay 3 days or more & get upgraded to the family suit room with it's very own private indo...

Driving there was a bit tricky since it's located deep in the woods, but Sanga was totally worth it.
-One of the best rotenburos (outdoor onsen) I've ever been to.
-Very clean and nicely decorated Japanese style room.
-Delicious kaiseki dinner using local ingredients. I especially liked their natto miso soup.
-Cozy outdoor and interior setting.
I would definitely stay there again.

Oct. 23 arrival; Oct. 26 departure
As others have written, this Ryoken is absolutely beautiful, the staff is amazing and the value is outstanding. Some people have mentioned that this place is expensive, but given that the price includes a lovely traditional room with shoji screens and tatami mats, access to private family baths and multi-course high quality and beautifully presented breakfasts and suppers, it is worth the splurge.

Room Tip: TIP – Our room with private stone bath was beautiful, but the bath was too hot for us to use. You co...

We loved our stay at Ryokan Sanga. We were there in early October so the Ryokan was busy but not overly crowded with people. We tried all the shared baths and family private baths (which requires reservation). The temperature was nice and even my children could get in after a bit of warm up time. The walk to the town in early morning was absolutely beautiful and magical. The Ryokan is a little further away from town but the shuttle bus took us back and forth when reserved. All the staff were very friendly and helpful - and went out of their way to make us comfortable. The food was fabulous and our children love the kaiseki dinner as well. Overall it was a lovely experience and I will definitely return for another visit.

We stayed one night as part of our honeymoon in Japan - end of May, arriving after Mt. Aso exploration with a rented car.

Room - We chose the hisakaki room, with private stone bath en suite. It was super-clean, comfortable and fitted with all necessary amenities and more. The bath was warm/hot and extremely enjoyable and relaxing.
Service - Can't fault it, from clear explaination on what was available and no-fuss booking of the other private baths to the two pleasant gift we received after online reservation (bath salts and a pair of traditional slippers).
Structure - We tried almost every bath, the best being the outdoor ones (rotenburo). A plus: one is dedicated to both male and female guests, unlike most of the other ryokan in Kurokawa and more generally in Japan.
Location - Kurokawa is off the beaten track but the journey is easy and straightforward by car. The ryokan is one of the farthest from the town, but only a 2 min drive.
Food - Kaiseki cuisine. We are no expert, but it was refined and throughly enjoyable, with excellent presentation. Kumamoto's traditional raw horse meat included.
Value - There's no way around, it's expensive and more so if you want the private en suite bath. Anyways good value with respect to other similar options in Kurokawa or onsen town.

Overall - We were spellbound in an extraordinary setting, well worth the detour and unmissable as an (at least) once in a lifetime experience. Best bet is 2 days, to avoid rushing, if money permits!

Highly recommended

We had a room in the main building and it was great. It really was a suite. The main room which was spacious had sliding screens and doors opening out to the trees and a rushing stream. There was a separate ablution room and a separate toilet. Then another delight the stone onsen bath, with screen windows opening onto the rushing stream in another room.
We had the package of breakfast and dinner. It was a pleasant walk to and fro from Kurokawa to Sanga and easy for lunch but eating in morning ang evening suited us.
You eat in your own private screened dining room. We had the same 'maid' serve us for all our meals and to see to our room. She was a gracious lovely woman who made our stay so easy.
Very good Wifi in the lobby area, not in the rooms
I have nothing negative to say bout the Sanga

Room Tip: Get a room with your own onsen bath.
