“most beautiful museum on earth?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

The setting and display of the Benesse House galleries is a joy to experience. not to be missed. Particularly if you stay at Benesse House you have personal access to the galleries after they have closed to the rest of the public!

“A marvelous place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

I really liked this museum, both for its architecture and its exhibits. When I visited, the museum hosted a retrospective of Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Take also a visit to the museum's cafe and, if your budget allows, dine at either the museum's Japanese restaurant, or the posher French-cuisine restaurant part of the same complex nearby.

“Site specific art a plus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Jennifer Bartlett's ' Yellow and Black Boats' (1985) - to turn round and see through the window and in the distance on a sandy beach a yellow and a black boat, repeating the two boats on the floor below the painting; this is hung opposite David Hockney's ' 'A Walk around the Hotel Courtyard Acatlan", also 1985 - a felicitous juxtaposition referencing the themes of both the sea and the hotel. Also: the fascination of Yukinori Yanagi 'The World Flag Ant Farm'; the progression through various levels; the contast in materials (glass and concrete) and the changing vistas through the ample glassed areas - all extend one's appreciation of the building as a work of art in its own right.

“Out of this world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

I can't agree more with other reviewers. This is an amazing place. The buildings are works of art in themselves and I will never, ever forget my first sight of the 6metre Monet in Chichu Museum. I had goosebumps for hours afterwards. We were lucky enough to stay and dine at Benesse House for one night and it was a highlight of our stay in Japan. Don't miss it.
