“Lovely Temple Accommodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

Our stay at Ichijoin was a highlight of our visit to Japan. The temple is in a lovely old building, with a beautiful garden made even more special by the autumn leaves. Our room was one of the less expensive ones without private facilities, but it was very spacious and comfortable. The shared toilets and washbasins were modern and spotlessly clean and, even though the accommodation seemed to be nearly full, we hardly encountered anyone else using them. The shared men's and women's baths were lovely, with large pools and great facilities.
The vegetarian meals used seasonal ingredients and were delicious - they were beautifully presented and served in our room. Dinner is at 5.30pm, which was not a problem for us, but does mean that it is necessary to plan to arrive by 5pm at the latest.
The morning prayer service at 6am is very interesting and impressive and also provides an opportunity to see inside the main prayer hall.
Ichijoin's location near the centre of the village means that it is possible to walk to all the main sights but there are also two bus stops within a couple of minutes walk.
The journey to Koyasan is not a quick one since it involves train(s), cable car and bus, but the scenery in the later sections is very attractive and Koyasan itself is beautiful and unspoilt, despite the large number of tourists and pilgrims. We would strongly recommend a visit there and a stay at Ichijoin.

Elegant and recently refurbished lodgings; all rooms have internet connection and ours had a spacious sink and toilet area.
Enjoyed a superb stay here, good access from the Koyasan station and to all the spots of Koyasan. It's a beautiful temple, with nice and helpful monks. Some of them speak English. Had a traditional room, very nice and big. There is no shower/bath in the room. We did not bathe, but you can use the temple's bath in the evening, which others found pleasant.. The food was great.. Strongly recommend attending the ceremony in the morning. Unlike our other accommodations where we were served in a dining room, you are served the food in your room (by the monks) . It was very cold outside, but the heat worked great, plus the low table they provided had a blanket-type skirt with a heater underneath, so we were very comfortable. There may less expensive temple lodgings in Koyasan but it was easy to reserve this one on Rakuten and the room and food and service was wonderful.

An overnight trip to Mt Koya (Koyasan) staying at a temple is a special experience. Not only do you experience a ryokan stay, but you are at a temple and can atttend a morning ceremony. I decided to stay at Ichijoin and found a good rate for a single person through the Japanese travel website Rakuten - a deluxe room with bathroom. This is a beautiful temple, the original temple area is over 100 years old, the accommodation wing is much newer. The deluxe rooms have their own bathroom, free internet connection, tv, telephone and heater - much needed as Mt Koya can get very cold in winter. Check in is from 3pm and a vegetarian dinner is served at 5.30pm which you can see from my pictures was presented beautifully. The monks can speak enough English to get by and are very friendly and helpful. The women's baths are very nice, there are 2 large baths, one hotter than the other (both quite hot). In the morning at 6am you can attend a prayer ceremony in the main hall, an amazing place with many subdued antique lamps which made it very special. Vegetarian breakfast in the morning at 7am with check out at 10am. You can walk to the main sites of Mt Koya in an afternoon if you are short of time. Ichijoin is near the main street where a few shops and restaurants are located. Recommend getting the Koyasan World Heritage Ticket from Namba Station (Nankai Rail) Osaka or from the Nankai Rail Ticket Office at Kansai Airport, where I got mine. The ticket will get you to and from Mt Koya from either Kansai Airport or Namba Nankai Station Osaka, including the cable car to get up the mountain. Free bus pass included and discount to some of the sights that charge an entrance fee. Recommend in autumn as not too cold, uncrowded and autumn leaves changing colour.
