“Maruken sanso - lovely!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for four nights. The room was very small but had its own basin and toilet. It was on the third floor: great for views over the village, but a long way down to breakfast, the ski room and the cute in house onsen. Make sure you don't leave anything behind in your room when you are on your way out!
Nabuko is a friendly, energetic and bubbly hostess with great English. She and her family are also amazing cooks, and the breakfasts and evening meals were superb. Maruken sanso is in a great location, close to the centre of town, the local public onsen and the main gondola (although you won't need to do a warm up after climbing the stairs to the gondola!). This was our third visit to Nozawa and we thoroughly enjoyed the authentic Japanese "feel" of this accomodation. A great place to stay!

Friendly transfer service on arrival & departure by host (Mr) Mamoru. Maruken-Sanso is VERY close to the main gondola and the main street. No showers though, although they have their own (post ski) onsen - which I now MUCH prefer than a sauna. Great restaurant recomendations - but you MUST eat in at least one night. (Mrs) Nabuko's English is better than my Japanese. Always helpful and always obliging. I will return to this B&B to ski at Nosawa-Onsen again.
A fantastic first experience to Japan.

Room Tip: There is only one "western" room (with beds) the others are Japanese style.

This delightful lodge with lovely owners - Nabuko and Mamoru - made our first ski trip to Japan much easier than expected. They speak enough English to communicate everything we needed, and were very helpful pointing out restaurants, how to get lift tickets, and even organising a taxi transfer from Narita airport (a tip for traveller - this is the same price and much easier than taking the bus/train option). We had a deluxe room (traditional Japanese futons on tatami mats) with our own ensuite. Very basic, and it took a little getting used to sitting on the floor/cushions, but we had fabulous night sleep every night on the futons. The baths are communal, though we were often the only users, with its own onsen from the hotsprings which was welcome after day after day of excellent skiing. Nobuko's family served an amazing array of food for breakfast and dinners - changing each meal. We liked it so much we had 7 of our nine evening meals with them. The location is ideal - short walk to the gondola, and short walk down to the main street where we got our afternoon oyaki (yummy veggie dumpling) each afternoon. A great, genuine, Japanese experience and we look forward to another trip.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are worth the extra for your own private toilet and basin, although they are on the...

We spend 3 nights at Maruken Sanso. We had the Super Deluxe room, which was very clean with 2 western beds and 1 Japanese style bed. Too bad that you don't have a shower in your room, but that is a bit common in Japan I believe... After a long day of skiing we used the "onsen" in the basement to recover! The location of the hotel is good, with only 2 to 3 minutes walk to the gondola and 5 to 7 minutes walk to the main street. They also have a computer and wifi free of charge. The breakfast and diner were more than we could have dreamed of. Every day something else and great taste! If you don't like the Japanese breakfast (which was very good) you can get a western one as well. I would like to thank Nobuko and Mamoru (the owners) for there hospitality.

We found this lodge by chance and were very happy with it. Location is one of the best in Nozawa Onsen - equidistant from restaurants, onsens and bars (4mins) and main gondola (3 mins). You can leave hire ski/snowbaord gear at the Gondola, so this 3 min walk is very easy.

The owners - Mamoru and Nobuko - are extremely kind and obliging, and speak enough English to make the stay comfortable. We had all three top story rooms - Japanese style with ensuite toilets. Very clean and nice, with good views of the valley. There are Japanese style baths in the basement, which we usually had to ourselves.

Food was very good, with breakfasts a highlight. I have skied in japanes for 20 years, and nearly all Japanese ski lodges/hotels will serve rise, fish, green tea and pickles for breakfast. These are an option here, but they will also do western style bacon and eggs, cereals and hot cocoa! There is free wireless and a computer too.

Great value for price. Highly recommended for overseas skiers/snowboarders coming to Nozawa Onsen
