“Great place to stay would recomend to all!!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2010

We did a boys trip to Japan from New Zealand in Feb and Stayd at the Lab for a week. Had a great time during our stay as the place is run by a great crew who go out of their way to help you enjoy your trip, the layout of the lodge is excellent with a big communal area to socalise and meet others staying there.

Anyone looking at doing a ski trip to Japan staying at the Lab in Hakuba is a must..

Great place to stay, only a short walk from Happo-one which is the biggest and best mountain in the valley. Also conveniently located near the 7-11 and liquor store which is very good for stocking up on snacks and other essentials.

Place is comfortable with an excellent bar (with tap beer) and meals area and a tv room which both are perfect for chilling out after a long day in the snow or gearing up for an apres ski session. Some rooms are a little cramped but that is fine if you are travelling with a group of friends. Beds were comfortable and rooms generally warm unless someone in your room leaves the window open! On particular occasions the heating needed to be cranked up a little. The food was more than satisfying, perfect for stocking up after a long day skiing, but make sure you also get out to some of the local restaurants to experience the Japanese culture. There are a few down by the train station which are cheap and really nice. The staff are very helpful and approachable and can direct you to such things.

Overall, the lab has everything you need for a good time. Its location in echoland is excellent and the lodge itself is very comfortable. Certainly the step up from some of the backpackers in echoland make it well and truly worth the extra money

I spent 2 weeks in japan over jan/feb 2010, we had not originaly planned to stay at the lab, but by chance ended up there.
the service we received a the lab was exceptional, our first day there, involved a tour to some of the best tree runs i have ever boarded on! not many people like to give away their secret locations, .. especially not to "random" people!

I had originaly planned on my trip being very budget, but the food at the lab was just to good to refuse! and defintaly was not breaking anyone's bank!

its very hard to describe the enjoyment i had there, but i would say, that the employee's and workers at the lab, turned what was a half decent trip to japan, into the best of hopefuly many more there!!

We ended up having to catch a taxi there from the train station in town, however once we got there we were warmly welcomed and given a tour of the lodge. We were then given a lift downtown to get lunch and supplies. They also had a deal with a ski hire company which gave us skis at a much cheaper price than the prices I found on the net; they also picked us up from the lodge and then dropped us back again. When we were finished with the skis we just had to leave them in The Lab's ski & board room.

We only needed a twin-share but they gave us a six bunk room, which was large and roomy anyway and was heated very well. Our room was directly above the bar where they were generally playing music; we had a few early nights and were never once disturbed by the music. The included breakfast was also an awesome way to start the day. The dinners we very reasonably priced and Sunday Japanese dinner was an awesome experience.

This place is terrific if it is your first time to Japan, and especially for us where it was our first point of call. Most of the staff are Australian and know their way around the town and the slopes, which use a difficult to understand system. The only gripe would be the 5 minute walk to the slopes with the ski gear. However, I had family staying in the Happo One village and they were paying almost three times the price for a much smaller room and no social activity. I think we definitely got the better deal.

Special mention to fantastic friendly hospitality and star servive from Mike and Ed.

Tips: Please review breaky menu to cook the eggs a variety of ways, rather than just 'runny scrambled'!

Tip 2: Have a 'house rules' list in reception about night curfews on noise levels, bringing home 'non-paying guests' etc!

What a great place to stay while skiing in Hakuba!
Great staff, great clean rooms and bathrooms and a great bar!
We incurred a school group staying there at the same time as us which messed with the more adult party atmosphere that we hoped for, but all in all still a great place to stay!!
