“Enjoyable stay for group of 5”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

A group of 5 of us spent a week at the Lab early March14. We booked a liquid tours package and had a transfer from Narita airport which dropped us directly at the Lab. There were 6 bunk beds in our dorm and there was enough space to place our luggage around without falling over it. Our dorm had a window with a view of the mountains. Beds were comfortable and heating was good. The (male) showers are on the lower level and 5 across. One one of our days all the shower curtains had been taken down, presumably for cleaning, which meant zero privacy when showering. Contrary to a couple of previous reviews we had hot water the entire stay. Breakfast, which commences at 7am, consisted of a couple of rashes of bacon, eggs of different variety, cornflakes, toast, coffee and juice. The common lounge area is a great area to rest your tired legs after a day on the snow. There is a bar and happy hour. The staff, in particular Elanor, were very helpful in providing info about where to get busses from to which resort. They also assisted with restaurant recommendations. The closest mountain from the Lab is Happo One which is about a 15min walk in ski gear. Its about a 10min walk to Hakuba town or the same to Echoland where there are plenty of places to eat. Theres also a great Onsen (Japanese hot spring) about 5 mins away. Wifi is also available but signal was not great from our dorm but worked well in lounge area.If your looking for a budget stay on the snow in a comfortable setting then you'll enjoy the Lab.

I stayed at the Lab on 3 separate occasions in the early season. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking to have a good time in Hakuba. It draws a very nice crowd of people and I met some people I will be seeing again even though I live on the other side of the globe. The staff deserve a special mention. They are very laid back, hospitable and helpful. After a day on the mountain you come and hang out in the lounge. Watch a ski movie, drink a beer then you can go out because there is always a crowd.
To sum it up I would say that if you bump into any people staying at the Lab they will have many stories to tell and you might regret that you didn't book there..

Enjoy
Sebsi :)

Room Tip: Typically the staff will place you where you fit best ;-)

If all your looking for is a place to put your head down, then this cheap place is for you! Be aware it's cheap for a reason. Many bunks cramped together is very small rooms, all of the furniture and services haven't been maintained in a very long time, and the breakfast, while inclusive in the cost is terrible small. I'm talking about a spoon full of scrambled eggs and literally a few slices of strip bacon.
Very nice staff though.

Room Tip: None I'm afraid. Normally you arrive after check-in hours so you show yourself to your allocate...

The Lab is by far the best place to stay in Hakuba! Andy and the crew are fantastic in meeting all your needs, from booking snowboard lessons, places to eat, which bus to take, where to snowboard and much much more! The Lab is the best place to make new friends and have fun with fellow snowboarding and ski lovers!
My friends and I moved to another backpackers, however spent all our time at the Lab as we felt we were apart of the 'Lab family', in which they welcomed us back with open arms! Great atmosphere and fantastic service, you couldn't ask for a better place to stay!

lets be honest i can't write a review to save myself but what i can do is tell you about my time at the lab....

i stayed at the lab last season and had such a good time i decided to go back this season. in February 2013 i went with a massive group of people, so when i came back in December i was traveling by myself. i was completely surprised and stoked when Andy remembered me... speaking of Andy, what a legend from day dot he welcomed me like family... anything i needed he did all he could to help. i have to take my hat off to all the staff at the Lab though, what an amazing group of people. sometimes chaotic times meant they weren't at my beck and call but that's like any busy accommodation.

so accommodation... you know what they say, location location location, the lab yeah that's where its at... 5mins either way from echo land (an awesome little area with some of the best restaurants in hakuba). and happo (the main area of Hakuba, and home too Jacks sports bar in my opinion the best bar service and music in hakuba and nonsmoking which i LOVED). also only a 5-10min walk to the convenience store Lawsons... and all the buses to surrounding mountains are closer than a stones through away...

back to the lab...
their is just a chilled relaxing vibe to the Lab that i found, going to the bar and common area was great place for socializing and having a beer at the end of a days riding, i met some amazing people down there. the food served at dinner was fantastic, tasty and filling. some days i wanted some relaxing me time they had a cool little TV room that id escape too which was awesome to have as an option to go too.

what else can i say about the Lab... oh yeah Hakuba has EPIC powder..!

so what do you want on your snow trip

awesome snow... check
a place to meet good people... check
somewhere to chill... check
helpful staff... staff
location, location, location... check
a bar... check
great food... check
hot shower... check

oh and the onsens in japan are sooo good, a must do. so do that...

so that's my story of staying at the lab, i met some absolutely great people, i had an amazing time in the snow, i ate some fantastic food and got my dance on at jacks...

thank you everyone from the Lab, i could have stayed in many places in hakuba and had good snow trip but this place made my trip go from good to amazing, so cheers.

I was fortunate enough to spend my last week in Hakuba at the The Lab. It was an extremely cost effective option considering its proximity to Hakuba's premier resort Happo-One, as well as being a short shuttle bus ride from the other prime snow destinations in the Hakuba valley. A hot breakfast, along with cereal, fruit, juice, tea and coffee were provided every morning and it was the ideal way to start a long day on the mountain. Dinners at The Lab were also a highlight. Despite having best laid plans to eat out at one of the many restaurants in Happo-One, more often than not, after a few cheap beers and good company at the bar, eating in was cheap and the generous portions were more than filling. The Mexican Burrito's and Chicken Parmagiana's were definite standouts. The rooms were modest but comfortable and regular housekeeping ensured that they were kept clean. The gym downstairs was handy too, but due to laziness I didn't get down there as much as I would have liked. Above and beyond all of these highlights were the staff. They definitely made our stay at The Lab what it was. Always happy to go out of their way to help with whatever we needed, and more than willing to share their wealth of knowledge and experience of the local area. Not just a helpful bunch but very friendly as well and for this reason I look forward to returning and would highly recommend!

Big thank you to Andy, Eleanor and Dave for our time staying at The Lab. It is one of the better hostels I've stayed in, the staff are willing to help at all times, whether it is places to eat, which they will reserve for you and book taxis or which mountain is best to ride depending on snow fall. The bar downstairs is a great place to meet other travelers, cheap drinks and a good vibe.
The lab has a good location and would recommend to others traveling to Hakuba!
