My wife and I stayed here for two nights en-route to Shiretoko National Park in February 2013. This hotel is perched right on the edge of a frozen lake. All rooms have beautiful views across the lake to the surrounding hills and peaks. We had a Japanese style room which was very comfortable and included a small sunny sitting area looking directly out over the lake; a beautiful place to sit and sip a glass of Nikka whisky and watch the sunset. Meals were included in our tariff. The dinners were very good quality Japanese food with a mix of local ingredients included. Breakfast is buffet style, mainly Japanese with a smattering of Western food too.
Unusually for Hokkaido, this truly is a tiny onsen town, there is only one other large hotel and the occasional tourist bus braving the small, winding road up to this lakeside retreat,
There is an ice bar set up on the lake and an outdoor onsen in an igloo-like structure built on top of the frozen lake. It takes a certain type of bravery (madness?) to take an outdoor onsen in -20C but it is definitely worth it.
One of the reception staff had excellent English and everyone else is happy for you to try out your 'tourist Nihongo'.
Highly recommended for an out-of-the-way truly Japanese experience.
