I had a super stay here! We opted for a Japanese style private room for 2 with shared facilities. The room was very clean, comfortable, new-ish, good-sized and we slept on futons. Together with the quality of the room, the excellent dinner spreads (fresh ingredients, well-presented with the famous yubari melon for dessert) and indoor/outdoor onsen facilities, it felt more like a ryokan experience! The staff were all extremely professional and polite. The bus stop for buses coming from Asahikawa is just outside the hostel, and the hostel is about 8 minutes walk uphill to the cable car. There are no closed door bathing facilities, and the bathing facilities are only at the female/male onsen (in true japanese style), so if you are not comfortable bathing with strangers, that could be a problem (as it was for my friend). The rotemburo (outdoor onsen) is altogether delightful (as Lonely Planet recommended), but as access to the female onsen is not regulated by any password, and unfortunately, a man walked in while I was having a leisurely afternoon bath (argggh-this is a true story)-perhaps the management could consider securing the entrance with a password). There is no internet access, and I had to fax in my reservation. Apart from that, this is one of the best hostel experiences I had, in Japan or in the world.
