“Excellent warm family run hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013 via mobile

Whilst road tripping through Italy we needed a night on the way to Amalfi. It is not an obvious choice for Australian tourists, however, it should be! The stunning hill views of Calabria are breathtaking and the hospitality and generosity of the Barbieri family was overwhelming. We ate at the restaurant for dinner and I think "wow" was every second word. Fantastic food, local produce, excellent wine and a lovely terrace made for a very enjoyable meal and stay. Highly recommend!!

We stayed in this beautifully situated family hotel for three nights as part of an 'over fifties' touring group and were greeted with drinks on the terrace which has stunning views of Altomonte, the mountains, countryside and the shimmering sea in the distance. All the family seem to be involved in the running of the hotel, presided over by Mr Barbieri himself who is a great character and they were all so friendly, welcoming and helpful that we never wanted to leave! The food was excellent, well presented and delicious - the local wine was great. The rooms were very clean and comfortable with a balcony to enjoy the wonderful views. The swimming pool area is delightful and ideal for relaxing. We would definitely want to stay here again as we were made to feel special and welcomed.

On our way to Sicily, we booked a room at the Barbieri hotel for one night. We have had a beautiful stay: the Barbieri people gave us the warmest welcome, we had the best Italian dinner with a fantastic Chef, great wines, a romantic breakfast in the sun with stunning views!! We would make the whole trip to Sicily again, only to visit the Barbieri family ....

we stay at the magnificent barbieri every time we drive to and from sicily as it is a perfect stop over, situated on a tall hill, surrounded by fruit orchards, with a view of the adriatic sea to the east and vast mountains to the west.
the family who own the hotel are as welcoming as the staff and our dogs say they love it! the food is delicious and the service exemplary.
we always look forward to returning (-;

Room Tip: chose a room with a view of the old citadel to the north of the hotel (most face this way)

On this holiday we were in a group and the Barbieri was our base for four days.As we toured we didn't have the best opportunity to enjoy all that was on offer.It didn't take long for my wife and i to wish we had much longer to do just that.Our room was at the front of the hotel with views overlooking what i would describe as breathtaking,not since visiting Tuscany some years ago have we felt that way.The family and the staff are first class as was the food, they also displayed some of thiere cooking skills before serving.We were fortunate with the weather so able to have breakfast on the terrace, with the views and the aroma from the Lindon tree's it lingers in the memory, happy to say.If you need a relaxed time, to have happy and attentive staff, good food a lovely pool and wonderfull views this the place.A car isn't needed unless you want to get about as the town is only a stroll away and transfers to and from the airport can be arranged with the management.This holiday was taken in June 2011.

Room Tip: Higher floors at the front have a small balcony an wonderful view of the valley and mountains and al...

We booked Hotel Barbieri partly because of Its location but also because of the positive reviews it has received. On looking at these again I find it hard to believe that we stayed in the same establishment since it failed in so many areas. On arrival at reception we were given no information about when and where breakfast would be served, the restaurant or any of the hotel's facilities. The lady who dealt with our check-in simply requested our passports, gave us a key and advised that the room was on the third floor, creating a very poor first impression.The room itself was spacious and well equipped but a little tired and in need of inexpensive cosmetic improvement. Despite this we were optimistic that the restaurant would compensate for a shaky start. In fact we found the food quality on our first evening to be acceptable rather than good and the service theatrical rather than competent. Due to this we had decided to eat away from the hotel on our second evening but a lack of alternative eating choices in Altomonte and a reluctance to drive resulted in us returning to the hotel restaurant. Unfortunately this resulted in I think the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. There were very few other diners and I was surprised when the chicken dish I ordered arrived in a couple of minutes. It was immediately apparent that it could not have been freshly prepared, a small quantity of dry meat mainly on chicken wings, inedible and unacceptable. After refusing it I agreed instead to accept the pork dish I had eaten on the previous evening on the basis that I at least knew what I would be getting. The accompanying salad consisted of some very tired lettuce leaves presumably left over from previous servings. I asked to see someone from management and a casually dressed character emerged from the kitchen to explain that it was an " Italian " salad. I did not eat it. The buffet breakfast offering was also extremely limited and poor in quality and I sensed that the few other guests were business travellers with little intrest in lingering over a breakfast. Despite asking again to see a manager at checkout no-one appeared interested in discussing matters with me although I received a small reduction in my bill in respect of two side dishes. I appreciate that late October is out of season and there may have been staffing issues but the general attitude of the staff I met does not convince me that they would be capable of providing a good service if the hotel was busy. Altomonte is a very interesting town and a good touring base with Hotel Barbieri having something of a monopoly. I think the town and the area deserve much better.

As stated previously, this place is a 'gem' high up in the hills, only a short walk from the small town. It is obvious the place is run by the Family. Our host personally took us for an exploration of the community sights, even the Mayor's Office. As part of a large group our room was not one of those with one of the spectacular views but you just went and sat on the grand terrace instead. A great place to stay. Am I being picky if I mention there was no one serving at the poolside ?

Room Tip: the rooms overlooking the entrance are the best for views.
