“Awesome B&B in the perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2012

Me and my wife stayed at the Black Walnut Manor in May 2012. Beautiful B&B and Carole is such an amazing cook! The breakfast was to die for and dinner also very nice. She gave us great tips for things to explore and got us on a Wine Tour with very short notice. This is one of those places you truly want to visit again. Highly recommended!

We are repeat visitors to the Black Walnut and always adore our time there. Carole and Mike are the perfect hosts and their knowledge of the area is beyond reproach. They are true ambassadors of wine country and can direct you to all of the gems that might otherwise be overlooked. We can also confirm the numerous other reviews; breakfast here is fabulous! The pool and patio is an urban oasis where we spend hours decompressing from the city life. Make no mistake, this is not like staying at Gramma's house. While it is a century home with all of the old charm that comes with it, it is modernly and tastefully updated and appointed.
Regardless of the purpose of your trip to wine country, you'll hardly find a better spot than Black Walnut Manor.

Room Tip: South (rear) rooms are quietest. Plan to skip lunch - breakfast is enormous.

Needed to find somewhere to stay between Toronto and Niagara and found this little gem! Could so easily have been a mistake as it is on a busy road but I really didn't hear enough traffic noise for it to be an issue. From the confirmation email attachment listing where to go and what to do, to the 'welcome' cheese & wine, to the wonderful bathroom & comfortable bed and the gourmet breakfast, there just isn't anything I could fault. As the website says - as cool as the other side of the pillow. I will be back and staying for longer next time.

I have many very positive things that I could say about this lovely, well appointed, cheerful, and well managed B&B. Most of them would be repeating what has been mentioned in the other reviews on this page.

This B&B also has one issue that potential guests should be aware of. "Considerable noise".
This B&B is located right beside a very busy, main, street/highway, that appeared to be a truck route.
There is also a railway track that borders the B&B property. The first freight train of the day went through at 7:30 a.m. on the morning that we stayed there.

The rooms are equipped with modern, quiet, efficient air conditioning, but sleeping with windows open was not possible for us, and even with the windows closed the traffic noise was noticeable (even for folks used to drone of the big city).

Suggestion: Of the four guest rooms, there are two that are located at the back of the building that would be quieter.

My wife and I, and two friends, booked the Black Walnut Manor as our second stop on a weekend in wine country. We were looking for two things: a central location from which to hit several wineries, and a more modern antidote to all the flowery, frilly B&Bs in the area. We got that, and a lot more.

First of all, the owners -- Carole and Mike -- are fantastic. We were greeted like family before Carole even set eyes on us (she called us "my darlings" through a window as we approached!), given the tour and handed a glass of local wine and a plate of cheese before we'd even unpacked a bag. She made last-minute reservations at About Thyme (an excellent casual bistro down the road...30 minutes on foot, 5 minutes by car) for us and gave us an excellent recommendation (The Good Earth...seriously, fantastic) for lunch the following day in Beamsville.

Our rooms were great. Our friends had a big bathroom with huge tub, while we had a beautiful walkout balcony. We looked right out to the pool, where we also spent some relaxation-time playing with their dogs. The next morning Mike left coffee, tea, juice and newspapers by our doors; later Carole made us a fantastic breakfast of melon & pancetta, chocolatines, broccoli and cheese frittatas and toast from locally-made bread. As anxious as we were to get on with our tastings, we didn't want to leave; we'd have rather read on the balcony or swam in the pool or played with the dogs. Alas, schedules demanded we depart, but we'll definitely be back; it's a great spot, it's in a fantastic location and the people are like old friends.

Book the Retreat room over email, and they were very accommodating with my questions and some special requests. The room was very nice, sort of a modern yet cozy feel. The en suite bathroom was a bit more open concept than I like personally but was very nice aside from a slight lack of privacy, probably not an issue for most couples or close friends. The balcony on the was simple, but enjoyable for a glass of champagne at the end of the night. Breakfast was divine, and plentiful (and I am a big eater). Breakfast on the patio suited me more than the breakfast indoors, but both were lovely and a matter of personal taste really. We decided after a long day of wineries that we wanted to go see a movie and Carole helpfully looked up times and locations for us (The also have a decent selection of DVDs that we were considering). Gracious and helpful hosts overall. The house overall is very nice. A bit spendy by my standards, but well worth it and seems pretty comparable to other places in the area. We are considering returning in the fall.

Inside the property, it felt like a very romantic retreat. The house is almost 100 years old and showed great charm, as did our hosts. We were welcomed as if we were at our own home, enjoying excellent breakfasts, home-made baked goods and high quality Darjeeling Tea. Also, our hosts made some excellent recommendations as to where to go in the area.

We had an unfortunate ant infestation on the final morning. It did upset us since we were forced to leave our room earlier than we had planned. Carole made a point of telling us that she would be calling the exterminator immediately.

The biggest issues with the location occurred when we stepped outside or left the windows to our room open (although they do have air conditioning in the room) since the property lies a few hundred feet from a freight train line, whose trains seem to enjoy blasting their horns. The fact that the property lies on a main truck route doesn't help either.

For the entire experience, we feel that the property overcharges by about 20%. The hosts are making extensive renovations to the exterior of the property. This includes a sizeable swimming pool. If they could build a soundproofing wall to block out some of the noise, then that would be the icing on the proverbial cake!
