“Wonderful Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

The property is beautiful. Old world charm. Location - can't beat it. Its on the Beach - you can throw a stone into the water from the balcony (thanks to the sea coming inwards for the last 150-200 years. The town has lost a few streets to the sea). The rooms are decent, not too big and not too small. The Bathrooms are pretty small, I think its been carved out (my guess is it wasn't there earlier), but modern. Nice pool. The food is decent. However, the breakfast menu just does not change one bit. We were there for 3 days and we got exactly the same stuff, including the Idlis. I'm sure they can be a bit more innovative. We were forced to have the Christmas Eve "Gala" dinner at Rs.2200/- person. I think they are just not geared to throw such parties. The choice and food was mediocre. They served the dinner at 8.30pm, by which time my kids had gone to sleep. They initially refused to give them any snack or food earlier in the evening as they were preparing for the night's party. They later relented and gave them French Fries, which was the only dinner my kids got. The hotel relented for the Christmas Dinner and waived off the charges for my children. The views are spectacular - the sea on one side, the Danish fort on the other. Tranquebar is not really on the tourist circuit, so, is crowd free. The hotel arranged for a guide to the Danish town, which was good. Its a really small town and there is absolutely NO other place to eat. Overall, a lovely experience.

Room Tip: Take the rooms facing the Sea on the 1st floor. Spectacular view

This place is beautiful - the building and the rooms are stunning. The sea air is clean and apparently the thick ozone layer here makes the atmosphere healing, and it certainly feels like it. Unfortunately, while we were there the pool was out of action - a kind of murky green and full of insects. This was a shame as there isn't a lot to do here. We felt a bit trapped inside the hotel and garden. The sea is not for swimming in. The beach is dirty and the fishermen use it as a lavatory. The village is small and there's not much to see. The Danish Fort is interesting but doesn't provide more than a couple of hours of entertainment. So you need to come prepared to do nothing - laze on the balcony with a book and enjoy eating on the breezy verandah. However, our nights were not peaceful. There are several temples in the village and they all pipe out very loud music very early in the morning for a LONG time!!! There is only one place to eat - the hotel is it. The food is fine but not outstanding. The breakfasts were disappointing. Lovely, smiling staff (except the management) Despite the drawbacks, it is a magic place - so worth a visit.

Room Tip: Pick the first floor and try to get a sea view. Our family had the two downstairs rooms which are pr...

We enjoyed our stay in this small peaceful village.

The hotel was great, clean and safe.

Breakfast was great.

Choice for evening meals was limited to the hotel as there's no where else to eat in town...

It was a great place to relax by the pool and enjoy some luxury...

Check in/Out : Efficient
Rooms: spacious....the three rooms on the 1st floor ROCK! We stayed I Crown Prince of Denmark - what a view....beauty - personified. Neat and clean...housekeeping efficient...I personally dislike too much of rugs/carpets...just adds to the dust mites!
Staff: Will go way out to help you...nice team...a tad laid back tho...
Food: excellent....they can't manage if there are too many guests though so be sure to tell the hotel on your arrival time and also if you require food and what u would like...remember this isn't a town....its just a village so they need time to get things together.

Room Tip: Any of the sea facing room....{Crown prince of Denmark/Princess Anne Sophia i forget the last one...

I stayed at Bungalow on the Beach for a day. We were a family of three with a toddler. I should say the staff took every step to make sure our stay was comfortable. The restaurant staff were understanding and ensured that we get the required food for the one-and-a-half year old. What made the stay pleasant was the feeling of being at home. It was raining heavily on the first day afternoon. The beach, the Dutch fort, the 13th century Shiva temple are also just a few feet away from the hotel and the staff, right from the security, were willing to share details of directions to walk down to these places of interest. I want to mention that cab facility is available, at request.

Room Tip: We stayed at the ground floor. If possible, do get a room on the first floor to have a better view o...

Did not stay there but had a meal and spent a couple of hours. Saw all the rooms and took a tour of the place. An old refurbished bungalow opposite the old Danish fort (reminds one of the old tea estate bungalows) with a swimming pool and 8 rooms. Right on the beach which is clean and not visited by many people. No television sets on the property which adds to it charm. will surely stay there on our next visit.

Room Tip: First Floor sea facing

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind words about The Bungalow on the Beach heritage hotel in Tranquebar.

Ideally, The Bungalow on the Beach is best enjoyed in an overnight stay, since the refreshing sea-breeze, the sunset, and the moon-star nights on your verandah, can't be enjoyed in a quick day tour.

We thank you for your visit and look forward to welcoming you back for an overnight stay.
