“Get mesmerized by the singing waves”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

Just lying on the verandah on the first floor of this restored property, taking in the sea view and the cool breeze of the sea, took me away into a dreamy world, gave a nostalgic feel like no other.
I got to know about this property via the Neemrana website.
This 17th century property was totally renovated, and you will get to know about this, if you look at the photo album placed on a table near the hotel front desk. This album shows pictures of how the property looked before the restoration and now.
We booked Princess Louise on the first floor, this being the only room available at that time. This incidentally also happens to be the largest room in the Bungalow. This room is like any other typical Neemrana property in Tamil Nadu. High Ceiling, Antique type furniture, 4 poster bed, etc.
There is only 1 restaurant in this village and that is in the property, so do have a good lunch before arriving here as the checking in time is 2PM. As we reached this place at 10AM , we strolled around the village to kill time. We visited the Maritime Museum, the 2 churches nearby, and the beach side. As it was getting really humid, we decided to drive to Karaikal( 12 Kms from this place) for lunch and then get back by 2PM. We visited Thirunallar Temple( Temple for Saturn God) a famous temple around here , had lunch at Hotel Sri Kandaas and drove back to Tranquebar.
In the evening, we had a nice walk around the beach and the fort. The fort is closed every Friday, so we had to wait for a day to visit this.

There are very less options at the restaurant here. We ordered a few dishes for dinner. Frankly, I did not enjoy the dinner here as the taste was not to my liking, especially the fish items.
After dinner, my wife and I were enjoying the sea breeze on the first floor verandah which was facing the sea. The management has placed chairs and tables here as seating for the guests who wish to enjoy the sea view.
The sleep quality is excellent, and the singing waves acts like a lullaby.
The breakfast was simple, and good. We ordered omelette and Dosa. The omelettes were well made and the croissant also tasted fresh and nice. They also had freshly cut fruits, corn flakes, and toast.
We visited the Fort( entrance is Rs 5/- per head, and an additional Rs 30/- for camera).
The fort has visitors from nearby schools, and villages, where people come on a day trip to this village.
As we had an onward journey, we checked out by 11AM and leaving behind a tiny place lost in history.

I and my wife spent two nights at the bungalow in the queen Anna Sophia suite. The reservation process was hassle free. The room was excellent with panoramic views of the bay of Bengal and the Dansborg fort. The food was good, but the complimentary breakfast menu was limited. The staff were courteous and helpful and made our stay a pleasant one. The only problem was that we were overcharged for our food bill, so do cross check your itemized food bill.

bungalow on the beach is one quaint place filled with history! especially when you see the before and after pictures of restoration...hats off to the neemrana group for the amazing work done. the rooms are beautiful with high ceilings, old furniture and lovely four poster beds. they have a nice pool and the whole feel of the place is light and airy.
the food is really good as well...not a very extensive menu. if you stay there for 2 days you will pretty much get to try everything on the menu but whatever is on it is very good and surprisingly easy on the pocket too.

Room Tip: they don't have a view of the sea from the ground floor rooms so if you are looking for sea-view...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

5 minutes into my research about stay options at Tarangambadi, it became clear that the Bungalow will be my best bet.

In depth analysis of various key aspects of the experience

1. Reservations: Was a smooth without any hiccups in spite of having only one channel - the company website - for booking. The reservation manager was prompt in responding both to mail and to calls. Full marks here

2. Check in: Again a pleasant experience with ample parking space and luggage being taken care of seamlessly.

3. Rooms and facilities: The heritage rooms were great. I liked the fact that the rooms were decently maintained and retained their original design themes.

However, the lack of a TV even in the common room was a bit of a let down. A 40" LED in a colonial era common room would have been great.

Coming back to the rooms, they were all well appointed and had fantastic terraces. Reading books or taking a nap on the terrace were just fantastic!

Even the common room was maintained as it was earlier. Nice!

The hotel has a good swimming pool next to the sea. A raised pool would have given one a view of the open sea and might have been an infinity pool.

4. Dining: The hotel has the only dining option in Tarangambadi. I liked the continental food though I found the 'indianization' in some dishes to be very bad.

In-room dining was pretty good. Snacks, tea etc. came up pretty fast and tasted good!

The complementary breakfast was very good and featured a wide range. The fruit preserves and tea were exceptional.

5. Sightseeing support: The Bungalow is located right in the center of the action. The reception had a brochure on attractions ready. However, they were unable to organize a walking trip. This was disappointing as I was unable to locate most of the less visible attractions due to poor signage on the roads. Also the town is in the process of being developed as a tourist attraction and you are likely to loose your way and/or focus.

To sum up:

A good experience overall. However, I felt that I did not explore the place. Felt seriously let down by the hotel in this regard.

A strong recommend, however, for the hotel though. I also recommend going with a lot of friends, books and games.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the beach facing face - better views and breeze

This is a nice spot - its always sea breezy so you wont get too hot here. We had a lovely room - gorgeous high ceilings and very spacious and airy and tastefully decorated, comfy bed. Lovely and clean, very nice bathroom and hot water!!! We found staff helpful and friendly, reception staff a bit more aloof and less accessible. If you are staying for more than 3 days, and are veggie you will probably have gone through the menu. And be warned - food service can be slow..... I thought it was me until I read one of the other reviews - as I also thought the dishes all tasted much the same. There's no TV (not a bad thing), but tea and coffee in the room. Alcohol - it appears only lager and whisky are available - and soft drink options limited. I felt sorry for staff having to keep apologising for this to other guests. Breakfast is continental and there is an indian breakfast option, but its not publicised.

I didn't stay in Bungalow on the Beach, but I used their restaurant. I had lunch, dinner and breakfast the next day. The location is fabulous. Their Tharangambadi Fish Curry was excellent, especially so with a couple of glasses of Danish Palone beer (brewed by Carlsberg). The breakfast was reasonably priced and there was a good choice including omelettes and dosas. The service was very nice.

The name says it all. This was my second visit. In 2008 we stopped at this place to visit the fort and discovered this hotel. We fell in love with it instantaneously. The rooms are maintained well. The property is amazingly located and Neemrana have done a terrific job of renovating it.
The pool water is very salty and could burn your eyes. Enjoy your food outdoors as you get the great view, preferably on the first floor as the view is even better.
The food is not elaborate but when you are at such a place then food should not be a priority. Best suited for people looking for a quiet beach town with nothing to do. Swimming in the beach is not advised.

Room Tip: Without a second thought - rooms facing the sea on the first floor. It is worth the view. Do not tak...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind review about The Bungalow on the Beach heritage hotel in Tamil Nadu.
Your compliments about the restoration and the maintenance have been conveyed to the Co-Chairmen and the Manager at the property.

We have noted your feedback about the pool and assure you that the necessary corrective action has already been taken. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.

With fisheries as a main activity, Tranquebar has an excellent supply of seafood throughout the year. At The Bungalow on the Beach, broadly, we serve seafood and South-Indian cuisine with a few Continental or Oriental dishes at random, to suit a range of tastes and palates.

Should you desire to taste a special dish or have a particular preference, you can certainly make a request at the previous meal, and the chefs will try and please you.

We thank you for your visit and look forward to welcoming you back soon !
