“Great place to visit Kruger and Mozambique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

Lovely small-scale lodge with very friendly owners. The brothers Francois & Etienne take care of each and every detail. Etienne is an excellent cook (and excellent opera singer too!) while Francois ensures all guests feel at ease. Would love to stay there again!

Maqueda Lodge blows you away when you first arrive with their common area right in amongst the African scrub with beutiful rustic and comfortable decor. The service and management from owner Francois is the best. He and his team go above and beyond for each single guest. His brother is the chef, Etiene really knows how to cook and is also a trained opera singer (ask him for a performance!). Terrific food in a beautiful friendly setting just outside the Kruger national park. I will be back and couldn't recommend it any more! Make sure you ask for Dylan as your tour guide in the Kruger. He won't stop until he finds you a cat!

Great food! Nice, rustic and cosy ambience. We really enjoyed our stay. It's a pity we didn't spot any animals coming near to the lodge during our stay. The staff were really friendly and tried to accommodate to our needs. Our little girl really enjoyed herself and the warm fireplace set up every night was a cosy place to spend the evening.

Beautiful and idyllic, this open plan lodge is surrounded by the forest of Marloth Park. Amidst the cries of birds and insects, you can hear some strange sounds in the distance and feel as if you are a part of nature - a blessing for an 'on-the-go' executive who needs to unwind.... Helped by the lack of wi-fi or Internet access at the lodge. The two brothers who run the place, Francois and Etienne, are wonderful human beings - authentic , kind, and with impeccable service standards. Etienne is a marvelous cook, proud to state that everything he serves, with a few exceptions like the fish from Mozambique, is sourced within 20km from the lodge. I warn you to be careful if you eat everything on your plate as you will need a long jog/walk the next day to burn it off.  Etienne is also a professional opera singer; for our 20th Anniv he prepared us a special dinner, and sung us a beautiful aria - now that's romantic! The 6 rooms at the lodge are well-sized and comfortable. On the first day, we drove into Kruger ourselves. Non SA residents, note that you pay R204/adult to enter the park, while SAfricans pay R50.  On the second day, Francois arranged a guide to take us into Kruger for the day - with breakfast included - for a very reasonable rate. Overall, this was one of the best family holidays we have ever had, with the added bonus that we came away with new friends, Francois and Etienne.

Room Tip: They have 6 rooms. Three are located in one strip and one of them has a small tub and is hence the h...

Warm hearted thanks to Francois and Marika for making us feel at home and for all the treats.
The rooms are spacious and neat, 5 star quality. The lodge is beautifully decorated, here you can rest and relax for weeks.
Please visit Maqueda Lodge, excellent service and friendly staff.

We bought a Groupon voucher for our 3 night stay at Maqueda. We got slightly lost while driving through Marloth Park, but we were pleased with the lodge when we finally arrived. Unfortunately when offered drinks on arrival, they were out of Coca Cola which is my husband's staple drink. Despite assuring us that the coke would be replaced the next day, we left 3 days later without a coke appearing. Unfortunately the bar-fridge was not a fully stocked one and had little on offer for us. Luckily there was a store down the road so we supplemented our own drinks. I would suggest a better stocked bar or else a little attention to guest requirements at the beginning of their stay.

We had luckily booked the honeymoon suite which was the last room in the row so suitable for people who want little contact with others! The room was lovely with a super comfortable bed and a large shower. Unfortunately, again we were disappointed by the lack of a kettle or coffee facilities in the room or in the nearby lounge. We were told we could enter the Lodge kitchen if we wanted to prepare hot drinks, but not everyone is comfortable helping themselves in an unfamiliar kitchen. They really should have a coffee and tea station in the rooms or even in the lounge. (Luckily breakfast coffee was filter coffee which pleased us tremendously!)

The meals were superb! We had dinner on the first and last nights and breakfast every morning. Eating together with the other guests does take some getting used to (especially to shy people like us), but it was a nice experience and we chatted to new people. Unfortunately we were told (at 5pm that night) that we couldn't eat on our second night as they had not planned food for us (despite asking for meals when making the booking). Luckily there was a nice little place to eat in Marloth Park. However, the owners should make guests aware that this might happen when they book.

The lounge area is stunning, if somewhat run-down and could do with a fix as some floorboards are loose and broken. The fire pit is great, especially as the nights in April are quite cold.

What made our stay worth every penny, was the fantastically friendly service from Etienne and Francois (and their father on the first night around the fire pit). They are both very social and like to chat to their guests. They made us feel at home and it was very interesting to learn about their endeavors in Mozambique as well as their travels around the world. Francois is a lovely man with an equally lovely daughter who accompanied us on our evening game drive through Marloth Park. The closeness to the Kruger Park is also fabulous and we were able to spend a day in the Park by ourselves and return to a comfortable room and a stunning little porch where we sipped on gin and tonic.

All in all a great stay. If they could attend to the small problems mentioned above, it would definitely be a fabulous lodge. We would love to return with a huge group and book out the entire lodge and experience the awesome hospitality again. Thanks Maqueda!

Room Tip: Choose the honeymoon suite for a more private experience as it is the last in the row. Guests there...

We recently visited this beautiful lodge near Kruger National Park, and had a fabulous experience! From the delicious four-course dinners, to the personal service from Francois and Etienne and their family, and the amazing tours of the area, this is a can't miss experience. We started with a fabulous lunch upon arrival, followed by a sunset ride where we ran into six giraffes and a zebra in the first few minutes and lots of other wildlife in a relaxing ride along the river. The safari the next day with Dylan gave us breathtaking up-close views of animals, a fabulous breakfast cooked outdoors, and lots of new insight into the South African animals. Our panorama tour the following day with Nick gave us amazing views of waterfalls and canyons, along with his knowledgeable commentary. A final visit to Chimp Eden sanctuary rounded out a lovely holiday! And ask Etienne for a song after dinner -- what a treat!
