“overnight with friends”

Just back from spending a night at this hotel. Booked through Travelzoo overnight stay with 8 course taster menu. Everything was first class. Bedroom good size and lovely and warm. Great bathroom with good powerful shower. Bar area very cosy with log burner. Everything as potlessly clean. Staff were very friendly and service good. Taster menu excellent as was the cooked breakfast. What more can I say except wouldn't hesitate to go back. Excellent value at £99 a couple.

Room Tip: We had room 7 which looked out over the beer garden. The trees were all lit with Christmas lights.

Green Features: Solar panels which we presume served all the heating a d electricity and toiletries were all organic.

Stayed here for a night due to a great deal offered via Travelzoo. Lovely small village location. The hotel is a traditional inn with boutique style rooms, and the owners take their green credentials very seriously. The food is excellent, we had the eight course taster menu, and it was superb. The waitress explained every course expertly. Very impressive. In fact, the staff were extremely efficient and super friendly without being intrusive. The wine list was well chosen, and there is also an extensive real ale offering, although expect hotel prices for drinks rather than pub prices. The lounge area of the pub is very comfortable with sofas and a roaring log fire, and the hotel is walker and dog friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay, and we will be back.

Me and my husband stayed for 2 night DB&B for our 41st Wedding Anniversary last week (Sunday & Monday) on a late deal for £200. Our room was on the ground floor (as requested) No.11 and was adequate - not large and I would have preferred a King Size Bed. It was clean and comfortable and had some fresh fruit and a tea tray with handmade biscuits - nice touch. The bathroom needs a little attention particularly under the sink but otherwise it was fine.
On our first night we had the 8 course taster menu (we had to pay extra but didn't mind). The food was delicious, beautifully served with attention to detail. We dined off the a la carte on the 2nd night and again service was good as was presentation but unfortunately my husbands steak was quite tough. We mentioned it to the waitress who said they had had a little trouble with their butcher. Perhaps room for improvement. Breakfast both mornings was very good.
All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and will certainly visit again in the future.

Room Tip: Room 11 is at the front but we did not find it noisy. I would definitely ask for a king size bed.

Green Features: I like the fact they grow a lot of their own produce and use local suppliers where possible. The refilling of bathroom products also cuts waste down. Well done.

We have just spent a fabulous night here with friends on a special deal which included B&B and the taster menu for dinner. We enjoyed the wine flight with an excellent meal and were very impressed with wines on offer. Our room (5) was lovely, comfortable and very clean. This room either has twin beds or zipped together they make a very comfy Superking. ALL the staff were exceptionally nice, friendly especially Alex, Katie and the very lovely Romanian waitress (sorry can't remember her name).
We were sorry it was only for one night but after a very hearty Northumbrian Breakfast Platter we made our 120 mile return journey home. We would certainly stay here again, maybe in the summer next time to enjoy some walking and sit in the beautiful garden.

Room Tip: Room 5. At the front of the hotel but the road is not too busy so not a noisy room.

We paid full price for B&B here and were disappointed by the drab, small and dated room. The bathroom was even worse with mould around the sink & bath which was itself damaged and pitted. The water ran hot & cold .
Dinner was very good though and service from the Eastern European waitresses was excellent & friendly unlike the Receptionist on our departure

Room Tip: ask for a room in the new block

My girlfriend booked a superior double room at Battlesteads for my 25th birthday. The intention of this trip was to do absolutely nothing - so we cannot comment on Hadrian's wall or nearby excursions! The room was fantastic - large and comfortable and overlooking the garden. We had a very large bathroom with a whirlpool bath and two showers (one above the bath, another free-standing). There was complimentary fresh fruit, a selection of tea and other hot drinks, and (what appeared to be) homemade biscuits. There was a sofa in the room, plenty of blankets for the cold weather, and handy amenities like an ironing board and a hairdryer.

The staff at the hotel were brilliant from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. We had an issue with the DVD player in our room so informed reception of the problem. Within about 10 minutes we were met by a member of staff (lady, petite, blonde hair) clutching a TV with built in DVD player which she set up, all the while being friendly and in no way making us feel a nuisance. Every other member of staff that we encountered had the same optimistic nature - they all appeared to enjoy working there.

We had the 8 course taster menu booked which I have to say was the best dining experience I have ever had. Each course was uniquely brilliant, from the popcorn to the savoury ice-cream. Staff were informative, describing each course in detail as it arrived which was particularly interesting as Battlesteads use locally sourced ingredients.

After our meal my girlfriend and I sat by the log fire in the cosy bar area and enjoyed some local gin and ales. We got chatting to the owner who was very welcoming and clearly passionate about Battlesteads. He informed us of the upcoming projects at Battlesteads and told us about the mailing list which we were eager to sign up to. This is an animal friendly hotel which we loved as we met a beautiful cocker spaniel and the house-cat while in the bar which added to the country-feel of the place.

All in all this was a wonderful break and we look forward to returning in the near future!

Green Features: They grow their own produce on site and use locally sourced ingredients too. This information is all over the hotel as they are rightly proud of this. Guests are welcome to tour the hotel's green features - of which it has won numerous awards for.

The hotel itself is very nice, particularly the outside garden area and the conservatory. However it stops there I am afraid. First and foremost we were greeted frostily at the reception by someone who quite clearly does not enjoy the job. That initial greeting put a sour note on the weekend from the start. The room was ok but whatever the hundred cushions are for I will never know. Obviously they cater for those couples who enjoy pillow fights. Food was very nice but we didn't know what the procedure was and ended up standing at the end of the bar for ten minutes whilst the waitress ignored us. Final issue was when I went up to get a drink and happily waited whilst another fellow was being served. All of a sudden a women and man in civilian clothing go behind the bar and serve themselves. Obviously they must have been staff but it seems a bit odd that they are allowed to just walk behind the Bar whilst the rest of us wait patiently. Anyway I wouldnt reccomend it.
