“a wonerful welcoming pub come hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

Great spot near to such marvellous walking country serving quality food at reasonable prices with a genuinely warm and welcoming staff.
Wea rrived late after a perty elsewhere and were given a friendly welcome and the staff seemed really pleased to be of service.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel are likely to be quiter than those on the roadside.

A wonderful hotel that simply gets everything right. Stayed in a beautifully decorated, characterful, clean, comfortable room and had breakfast and dinner in the restaurant that serves excellent food, much locally sourced, with great flavours and presentation. The bar and lounge is a great place to chill out, with large comfortable leather chairs, a beautiful fireplace and an excellent selection of drinks, particularly whiskeys. As well as all this though, the thing that makes this place so good are the wonderful owners and staff - welcoming, friendly and efficient. The hotel is simply full of character, charm, quality and efficiency.

We stayed for one night over the bank holiday, just as a stop over. The hotel is in a quaint village and handy for trips to Hadrians wall. The service and quality of food in the restaurant was excellent. Friendly attentive staff. Only negative comment was the size of the room. It was decorated well, just a bit small. Overall a lovely place to stay and eat.

Dropped on this by chance while searching for a short break, took advantage of the last minute deal and got DBB for 3 nights for £285 for 2 of us.

The room we were allocated was actually a ground floor disabled room with wet room but nevertheless it was an outstanding room, furnished to a high standard, lovely bedding, flat screen tv couldn't fault it.

Breakfast served in the conservatory was everything it should be.
The evening meal was 3 courses all great food, waitresses were excellent.

I would not hesitate in recommending Battlesteads to everyone, give it a try

This is the kind of hotel that demonstrates the shortcomings of a crude star rating system. Though only rated three star (because it does not tick all the boxes on the ratings scheme), that does not remotely reflect the type of experience that the guest is likely to have. That is because this very individual hotel has been established and grown according to the sound individual instincts of the owners rather than following by following more conventional paths. Nowhere is this more evident that in the advanced and award-winning heating system which supplies much of the hotel's overall power needs and helps grow fruit and vegetables year-round used in the kitchen. That also provides, effectively, mains pressure hot water for showers and baths, a welcome boon. If you are at all interested in how all of this is done, Richard, one of the owners will be delighted to show it all to you and provide a fascinating commentary on how it all works.

The hotel is comfortable having a good bar with a great variety of local beers, organic wines and comfy seats. The walled garden is a delight, filled full of wonderful plants which attract pollinators and birds aplenty. The restaurant is pleasant and the good is extremely good, prepared by an accomplished and experienced chef who uses only locally sourced top quality seasonal ingredients, much of which is grown in the hotel grounds. While the food is not particularly cheap, neither did I think it was expensive and it was, I think, good value considering the fineness of the cooking.

My bedroom was clean and tastefully decorated with good quality furnishings and though quite small, it was more than adequate for my needs. I found the mattress and pillows rather too firm for my liking though no doubt they would be just right for others. There is tea, coffee and hot chocolate in the room with a kettle (though a few sachets of herbal tea would have been nice).

Finally, Wark itself is an attractive village with a number of lovely walks accessible directly from the hotel guided by bespoke free leaflets provided by the hotel. In in all, this is an excellent place to go and the owners are well-justified in my view as styling this a destination hotel and restaurant.

We stayed at Battlesteads after a long day driving up from London. The room was very comfortable, easily big enough for the four of us. We were really tired the evening of our arrival and it was very welcome to find that the restaurant could seat us in half an hour. The countryside around Battlesteads is gorgeous and we were sorry to spend so little time there (only one night). We hoped to spot the hedgehogs in the garden or the river otters by the bridge but didn't have enough time. It is a quiet and beautiful inn.
