“The best hotel near Derby (and probably for a long way beyond)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

I have recently retired from a business that required frequent trips to Derby over the past 7 or 8 years, and I can now reveal that the best hotel anywhere near Derby is the Morley Hayes. I spent the first 4 of those years going from one hotel to another around Derby hoping to find one that felt like more than just a room with a bed. It was when I was nearing the end of the list of possible hotels that I found the Morley Hayes, and what a difference. Finally somewhere that really cares about making every aspect of your visit a pleasure instead of a hassle. Wonderful staff for whom nothing is too much trouble, always friendly and helpful without being overbearing (and very loyal staff too), rooms decorated and furnished with high quality materials, with comfy chairs and sofas to sit down in rather that having to lie on the bed to read or watch TV. Beds the size of a tennis court, a wonderful view from most of the rooms (I had more than my fair share of room upgrades!), and peace and quiet all night.

The food and service in the Roosters bar is excellent and very reasonably priced (with a nice pint of Tribute from Cornwall), and for the occasional special evening the Dovecote restaurant probably serves the best food around Derby as well. I enjoyed many relaxing walks around the beautiful golf course, and the Bluebells in the wood in spring are spectacular.

I haven't written a tripadvisor review before as it's only a small hotel and you need to keep these gems quiet when you find them, but since virtually everyone seems to give 5 star reviews it probably wouldn't have made any difference. So thank you to everyone at the Morley Hayes for making so much time away from home seem like being at a second home, I'll miss you all.

Fabulous food and excellent service. The welcome was good and the staff were very friendly and polite. If there is a criticism to be made, and it is only a slight one, the live music was excellent, but a little loud at times making it difficult to chat. This said, the pianist was good and very talented. Overall a very enjoyable meal and very well worth a visit. With food as good as this, booking is essential. Well done and thanks to all the Dovecote staff! Would recommend.

Dear Dave

Thank you for your review and we are delighted you had a most enjoyable time. Ryan our resident pianist is here at weekends and occasionally with the stone and brick walls in the restaurant it may have been a little loud. I'll have a word!

We stay here regularly as my husband's company hold their Christmas party here every year.

We usually ask for a room behind reception as it tends to be quieter. The rooms are beautiful - huge bed, sofas, luxurious bathroom with Molton Brown products. The staff are always friendly and professional. I've only every stayed here at Christmas, and the lights and decorations are very pretty - so much effort goes into it.

We choose to have 'breakfast in the nest' which is the breakfast of your choice delivered to the room - always good when we can't quite drag ourselves out of bed after partying into the small hours!

I'd live here if I could - I'm hoping that the party will be here again this year, as we always enjoy our stay.

Visited here as a golfing Sunday driver with 2 other couples. What a great hotel, excellent service from a friendly group of staff, very good accommodation with doors opening out onto a balcony or terrace, all overlooking the golf course. Dinner in the Dovecote restaurant was very good and the service excellent. To top it all breakfast served in the separate breakfast room was cooked to order! A very well run modern hotel and with only about 30 or so rooms made it all the more friendly. We'll be back!!

Excellent stay in this lovely hotel. Small reception but beautiful room and huge bed. Molton Brown bathroom toiletries were lovely. Shower very good.

Had dinner in the Roosters bar and the food was excellent , however extremely busy Sunday night and food took a while - but worth the wait.

Breakfast included with room rate was very good.

Hotel staff very friendly.

Room Tip: We had room with ground floor terrace - very nice.

We stayed at Morley Hayes as my daughter's marriage took place there. The whole experience was so good. They couldn't do enough to help us , even to the extent of helping the bride try her dress on the night before the wedding.! The breakfast was extremely well presented and the service was superb. I would recommend the whole experience to anyone without any reservations.

We were visiting Derbyshire to see our friends and needed b&b for 5 nights. We chose Morley Hayes although it is a hotel and we would not be golfing. The superior room was £180 per night with breakfast included. A lot more money than we would usually spend but it was worth every penny.

Fantastic everything ........... the room, the shower, the views, the other guests, the parking, the food but best of all was the staff. Nothing was too much trouble but at the same time they were not in your face. There was a wedding and a golfing society staying at the same time but this was absolutely no problem, in fact, it made the stay more interesting. So do not think that this hotel is just a wedding venue.

Room Tip: Phone up and speak to Reception who would help you decide.
