“Fantastic place to come to ski.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Stayed here for a ski related conference and was extremely impressed (not all that easy to achieve!). As I’ve experienced before with big Japanese ski hotels its incredibly well organised and everything is designed to make your stay as simple and relaxed as possible. Free ski lockers next to the rental facility, wifi free, lots of options for food and it can all be charged to your room. The rooms (I was in the north wing) are large, clean and well heated. Wifi is available but when everyone returns from the slopes the download speed degrades significantly! I borrowed a LAN cable for free from the front desk for my laptop which solved this problem. Breakfast was included in my rate and was a decent spread of both western and Japanese options. I chose the buffet option to eat most nights (there are several to chose from). Good value for 4275 yen with lots of sushi and sashimi included as well as snow crab. Water and coffee are included but drinks are extra. Prices generally weren’t too bad here and there’s a 7/11 and another small shop across the road where you can also buy food and drink cheaper. There are staff everywhere who are only too pleased to help, very polite and speak good English.

Visit the hotel website and you’ll see there are lots of food, entertainment and leisure options available in the hotel. The onsen is great, the indoor pool is not really for swimming though – it’s a wave pool with a (short but fast!) water slide into it. There’s a small Jacuzzi as well. You need a 100 yen coin for the lockers.

Access to the ski area is very easy and the skiing is wonderful – it was very cold when I was there (reaching minus 19 degrees C) with powder snow falling most nights and sunny days following – perfect! The slopes are very quiet and there are no lift queues to speak of. Guests are mainly Japanese and Australian. There are several options to eat on the slopes – they all serve the same food at the same price. The large restaurant at the base of the Isola Grand gondola was by far the least crowded option. Night skiing is included in the price of a day ticket and runs til 9pm – well worth doing if your legs are up to it!

Check out is 11am. They offer free luggage storage in lockers if (like me) you have a few hours to kill prior to the 2 hour transfer to Chitose airport. I must say I really loved staying at this hotel – the conference facilities were good too. I will plan to return soon with my wife and kids – there’s lots to keep the latter entertained. Ski Japan organised my trip and they are also highly recommended. Can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: Fellow delegates raved about rooms in the south wing and the Tower so you really can't go wrong...

For the past 5 years, I had always spent my winter holiday with my family at the Rusutsu resort. We enjoyed thoroughly the winter skiing experience at the slopes, the hot spring, the food at the various restaurants and the impeccable services. We keep coming because each time the experience is so wonderful and unique.

This year, we stayed at the Tower, which is a world class facility and the service level of the staff is faultless. The room is on the top floor and offers an amazing view of the mountains. If you are visiting the Rusutsu Resort, I would highly recommend the Tower block because the rooms are huge and you are like living in a house - with bedrooms in a separate floor!

There are so many restaurants to choose from for snack, lunch and dinner that cater for any budget. A bar opens long hours if you want to get together for a drink. We particularly love the October Fest restaurant and during the New Year period this year, we enjoyed the "all you can drink for free" dinner for several nights! Unbelievable!

Most of the staff speak perfect English and you won't have a problem in communicating with them. At the front desk, staff even display a "Can I help, please" tag in English under their names to indicate that they welcome particularly visitors from the English speaking world.

All the staff I met are courteous, efficient and willing to do extra to satisfy your needs. I can see the passion of the staff in putting customer first. However, I would like to praise highly Mr Y Endo, who has been a great help in advising us all the wonderful activities at the resort during the New Year and helped us to arrange transport to Toya hot spring resort after Rusutsu.

My daughter suffered from an illness on the last night of our stay. We were worried as we were not familiar with the emergency health care arrangement in Japan. The hotel staff (Yuuki Inoue) managed it well and took my daughter to a hospital for urgent treatment at about 5am in the morning in no time by an ambulance. The hotel staff had also tried their utmost effort to peace our mind during this small sickness of my daughter. Later, they extended our stay in the room for several hours so that my daughter could have a more comfortable place to rest as it was our last day of stay. It was just offered to us without us asking. I cannot thank them enough.

Staying in the Rusutsu is just like staying at home and you don't need to worry about anything - the hotel staff will walk an extra mile to make sure everything is perfect. I will keep coming back to Rusutsu for holiday for certain. Big thanks to Rusutsu!

Room Tip: Request top floor room in the Tower block.

Had a great winter holiday at the Rusutsu Resort Hotel. Food was great, Ski facilities were wonderful and there were enough trails to keep us busy during our 5 nights stay there. South wing is a little run-down, but given it's proximity to all the skiing action, more than made up for it. Ski instructors were awesome. This place is totally magical.... Will definitely go back again!

Room Tip: South wing is where all the action is. North wing is good too but need to walk a little to the sout...

Spent a fantastic 5 days here and thoroughly enjoyed the winter experience! The entire resort is self-contained with a variety of things to see & do. However, the main draw would be their large number of gorgeous ski trails for various levels of skiers. Being a first time skier, I took a 4-hour ski lesson which was excellent- the instructor had me up on one of the easy slopes by the end of the lesson! Was mesmerised by the beauty of the falling snow and surreal pure white surroundings on the slopes. Had an awesome winter snow vacation here : )

Room Tip: Request for a higher floor room at the Tower for outstanding views of the ski slopes.

If you're comfortable paying US$39 for a child's dinner buffet, then Rusutsu Hotel won't bother you, but there are very few a la carte dining options, so eating here can be very expensive (our package only included breakfast.) Set meals at the restaurants go for a minimum of US$53 per adult. As the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, there are no alternative dininig options, unlike Niseko village.

The hotel is very dead after 5pm - although they offer night skiing, there's nowhere to get a cup of coffee or hot chocolate when you return. Similarly, the restaurants offering breakfasts take last orders at 9am, so don't look for a leisurely lie in!

And if you check out at 11am (Y3000+ for an hour extra late check-out!), you have to pay for a shower and a locker to store your suitcases until you leave - and you have to wheel your own suitcases out of the hotel, no concierge service!

Low-level of English amongst most staff and anecdotal evidence from those who do speak English is that the management does not invest anything in trying to upgrade their skills.

Given the many other options for good skiing in Sapporo, we won't be coming back.

Quite spacious hotel room. The little balcony makes the room nicer. In-room heat is a bit too high and dry. On-sen is indoor which is a bit disappointing. Sport massage at South Wing was good, particularly after a full day skiing, must do.

Room Tip: Rusutsu Resort has three separated buildings. We stayed at the North Wing, which is the best in term...

My wife and I spend 5 nights at Rusutsu Resort in one of the north wing rooms. Our room was very comfortable and quite large by Japanese standard. Our room had an amazing view of the West mountain and ski slopes.
We had purchased an all inclusive package which included breakfast and dinner each day. This means that you can get to choose from one of eight or more restaurants on the resort.
Our favourite restaurants were both Japanese restaurants the Kakashi, which is located in the south wing and the Kazahana, which is located in the Tower. We also had dinner on our last night at the Lamp House, which is a Japanese BBQ restaurant located in a wooden cabin in the car park with an all you can eat and all you can drink menu. Share a table or bring friends to this one, as it will be much more fun. The other restaurants include a French, Italian, Chinese and a buffet style.
Not all the restaurants are open for breakfasts but our favourites for breakfasts were the Kazahana and the Atrium both located in the Tower. There is a monorail which continually runs between the main hotel complex and the Tower so getting to the Tower was not a problem. The Tower also had a really great onzen with an outdoor pool overlooking the ski slopes, which are lit up at night up to 9:30pm. Should we go back to Rusutsu, we would probably look to stay in the Tower even though we were very happy with our north wing room.
It doesn’t really matter where you stay as you’ll have direct ski in and out access to ski slopes. The amazing thing about Rusutsu is that there are no large crowds or queues to get onto the chair lifts and gondolas that get you up to some of the most amazing powder snow that you’ll likely every experience.
Our routine each day was to have a run or two down the West Mt, then head for the gondola up the East Mt and then down to the Steamboat café for lunch. “Heavenly View” was our favourite ski run down Mt Isola. After our stay at Rusutsu we stayed a couple of nights at Hilton Hotel in Niseko and even though the Hilton hotel was really good, we preferred our overall ski experience at the Rusutsu Resort with its fantastic powder snow.
