We stayed at the hotel for a three day visit to the Berner Oberland. We selected the hotel based on price and location -- it was one of the cheapest three star options I could find in the Interlaken area, at 240 CF a night for a two bed room with an extra bed brought in for our child.
The location delivered -- it is directly on the shore of the Thunsee, a short drive from the Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost train stations. The attached photo shows how gorgeous the surrounding area is. The grounds of the hotel were reasonably well maintained, with deck chairs, a small playground, and a small grass area next to the lake. Our room also had a small balcony that looked out on the trees and lake. No complaints at all on this front.
The hotel did not deliver. While the staff were friendly and reasonably attentive -- particularly at breakfast, which was the highpoint of the hotel -- the rooms were a tremendous disappointment. On the plus side, the in-room refrigerator was cold, there was a good size safe, the closet had a lot of shelf space, the tub was large, and the water pressure was good. On the negative side, the furniture was old and marked up. The television was the smallest I've ever seen in in a hotel, and missing buttons. The two main beds were among the least comfortable I'd ever slept on. The roll-away they brought in for our son was, without a doubt, the hardest most uncomfortable surface I've ever laid on that was intended for sleep. And I once spent a night sleeping in a sleeping bag on wet linoleum. It was that bad. The wireless internet, which was supposedly available, did not reach our guest room, so I had to go to the lobby or sit out in the cooridor to use it. In the bathroom, the tub drained inadequately. The soap dispenser was broken. And the hair dryer was feeble.
The worst part of the stay was that the prior guest had apparently overflowed something in the bathroom, leaving the rug in the bedroom wet. They'd been trying to dry it prior to our arrival, and hadn't gotten it entirely dry. They covered the wet spot with some extra rugs, which was reasonable as we needed the room. But the next day they did not return to finish the job. This left the room damp and smelling of mildew by the time we returned for the night. On the third morning we asked them to finish drying the room, which they did, but we shouldn't have had to ask.
The hotel is not air conditioned. We were there in warm weather, so had to chose between being hot or having the windows open and dealing with mosquitos.
All told it was not a pleasant stay. While I think we got what we paid for, I would not stay at this hotel again or recommend it to anyone except the most understanding budget travellers.
