La Corniche would be a perfect waiting room for heaven. The ocean views are breathtaking; the Dune de Pyla views are stunning. The design of this hotel, restaurant and bar by Philippe Stark is magnificent. It's spotless and very well run. We go to La Corniche half a dozen times a year between April and October for drinks on the far side of the outside patio veranda area, which is marked off from the exterior restaurant seating area. Soft drinks, a beer or a glass of wine are in the 5 to 7 euros range; reasonably priced for a hour's leisure on the deck in front of the ocean. A glass of champagne or a glass of a finer wine will cost 10 to 12 euros. The bar food -- tapas or aperatifs -- are delicious. So to give examples of how we visit La Corniche, for two of us in the late afternoon for an hour or so for a drink, it costs 12 euros. On a summer evening, five of us arrived at 9 pm before the sun went down, and we stayed until midnight, enjoying a round of drinks, a bottle of rose and 3 aperatif plates -- all for 80 euros -- and it was a grand evening.
I've not yet stayed in the hotel, though I'd like to do so. Close friends tell me the food is good, though pricey. So we're very happy with drinks in this superb atmosphere with stunning views of the ocean. I've read the negative reviews. Understand that the patio deck bar area is distinct from the restaurant area. That's not so hard. Try a bit of French and gracious, appreciative smiles with the staff, and you'll find their service is warm, friendly and efficient. The day and night universal "hello" is Bonjour, and you know that "Merci" and "S'il Vous Plait" is always appreciated. I find that "Oo-la-la" is spontaneous every time I see that view of the ocean. With the French when visiting their country, if you can speak one broken sentence, or make a little joke, you'll find they are friendly, helpful and polite. For example, look at the ocean, smile and say to your server, "Je peux plonger (plon-jay) au mer?" (I can jump in the sea?) Just don't do it or try it! Enjoy your drinks, company and the views.
