Myself and my partner stayed for 2 nights for a friends wedding, staff were excellent, could not do enough for you. Christ on the main bar was excellent at his job, could not do enough for us, a real credit to the hotel, will be back for another stay :)

Such a friendly welcome, very family friendly, lovely rooms and breakfast was great! The bar food is excellent as well and the staff can't do enough for you . It's is right next to the most fabulous beach, highly recommend a stay here if you are in the area.

We stayed here in mid July for four nights. Had a very enjoyable stay. Hotel was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good and we enjoyed two dinners as well. Friday and Saturday nights were noisy outside but I cant blame this on the hotel. So beware Friday and Saturday night in summer anyway. Though the noise didn't ruin it for us. We enjoyed the pool and walks in the area and had a relaxing time. The Guinness was in good condition also.

Couldn't recommend this hotel. I asked for a quiet room as I prefer to go to bed early, instead I got a room with a very noisy fan from the kitchen below. I was told the fan would be switched off by 9.15 every night. The first night I had to ring down at 9.30 to ask for the fan to be switched off. The second night I had to ring down three times before it was eventually switched off at 10.05.
When I complained the next morning I was told the bar had taken a late order for food so they had to leave the fan on. This seemed to take priority over the paying guests. I was due to stay a third night but decided I couldn't take any more. It was impossible to spend much time in the room in the afternoon or evening due to the noise. The reception told me they couldn't find another room free. I had come to Downings for a relaxing break but this was made impossible.
Breakfast was quite mediocre, poor selections of cereals.
As others have pointed out leisure centre is not part of the hotel and is not even available to guests in the morning.
Bedroom was clean and pleasant - apart from the noise. Public areas including the bar and reception are tired and grubby and in need or redecoration

Room Tip: Avoid room 216

This was my first time in Downings and it's a very picturesque area with beautiful sea views.
The hotel is in a good central location and it's easy to get around - plenty of signposts
My opinion of the hotel is more mixed.
Some if the staff are great, very friendly but a couple of sourpusses let the place down - smile at your customers!!
Bar food was very tasty & reasonably priced; breakfast not so good. By the time we headed down it looked like the breakfast room had been pillaged by Vikings. No cutlery, no juice and the hot breakfast was dried out, the toaster yielded up some burnt offerings too...tea was nice though.
My biggest gripe is the noise, the walls are paper-thin. We were subjected to a cacophony of noise from the elevator, our neighbours expletive filled arguments and mischievous children slamming doors( Bless them! )
Not the worst hotel I've stayed but room for improvements all the same.

18 of us had a wonderful stay at The Downings Bay Hotel. The staff and hotel were amazing, very accommodating, warm and friendly - especially our host Eileen. Enjoyed great golf at the nearby links of Rosapenna. Beautiful location, food and rooms were excellent and great value for money- we will return!

THis hotel has a very noisy disco during the weekend so make sure your room is not above the disco room. Another misleading thing is the spa facilities which are not in the hotel but located a few minutes away, so do not envisage putting on your robe and nipping downstairs to enjoy these facilities. Apart from that it is a lovely hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid the disco.
