“a terrific location... good quality bungalow accommodation right on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

Magnificent…. One of the most relaxing hotels we have ever stayed in. The bungalows are right on the beach. They are clean, spacious, light and have a TV and internet. The manager of the hotel is friendly and chats with guests at the buffet dinner and afterwards in the bar. The staff at the front desk and around the hotel are all friendly. Some level of French is required; but our French was pretty rusty and we got by.
The buffet dinner is excellent…. Try the Dory Fish that you order separately at the grill counter.
It’s a long drive from Noumea, so stay a few nights at least. We broke the drive up by stopping for the night in Bourail on the return trip.
I would also check the time of year. According to the annual rainfall maps on the meteo.nc website, this stretch of coastline receives about 300 mm of rainfall per month in January, February, March. It was beautiful in June when we went.
To experience New Caledonia properly, you need to get out “in the bush”. This is a great and easy way to do it.

Rooms are very basic but adequate. The location is great and the restaurant is quite pleasant despite its simple offering.

An enjoyable base to see a few of the sites around Hienghene.

When travelling around the island of New Caledonia, there is limited option for accommodation so you cannot afford to be too fussy. For South Pacific standards, the Koulnoue Village Resort is still very good value for money. Originally opened as a club Med, the resort is aging well (over 20 years old). Though rooms and fittings may look a little tired, the setting close to the beach makes up for it.

Distance from Noumea: 366 km, driving on well sealed roads: 5 hours. Choose the itinerary from La Foa/Saramea to Poindimié>>Hienghène). The mountain range are just magestic.

The real draw-back is the limited options for meals at the Koulnoue. Lunch time menu is dominated by meat and seafood – no vegetarian options and evening has only an expensive buffet on offer, likewise dominated by meat and seafood. There is no “snack” menu or even “room service. As there are no corner stores near by, you may want to stock up on dry foods (nuts, dried fruit, tin foods, soups, biscuits, etc..) as you can always make up a snack in your room using a kettle (no microwave in room).

Located in an old coconut plantation, the setting allows for leisurely walks, lazing on the beach or at the pool. There is lots of room so no feeling of having to share the space with others. Be prepared for the “Alizé”, aka trade winds which come up in the afternoon. Great way to dry clothes !

Management is proud of its “green” credentials including buying local and growing its own vegetables. They also promote several guest houses (or B&B) run by the Kanaks (Melanesians) where you can book for a meal or even a stay. Well done for supporting local businesses. If you choose a “Melanesian” experience, make sure to read up on accepted behaviour and respecting “La coutume”.

Simple service with smile, not high tech equipment just basically maintained. The food served is fair and the experienced chef Jean provided a large tasty buffet. It's a pleasure to enjoy the breakfast buffet on the open space and relaxing watching the sea. The beach is not so good but empty, small swimming pool. You can practice at the golf of go around the garden and the ranch. Most ot the fruits and vegetables served are produced BIO from their garden.

I spent a night here in Jan 2011, and another 2 in Oct 2011. The rooms are starting to look a little run down and maintenance isn't always what you'd expect (we had 3 lights in our rooms that needed new bulbs), but it is a great spot to relax by the ocean and the buffet dinner is well worth it. The service was always great (by Pacific standards) and the staff at the front desk were happy to organise dive tours and boat trips for us. There is a great little reef straight off the beach that is good for snorkelling and reef walking at low tide, but it's not well advertised (I didn't know it was there on my first visit). My only real complaint is that there aren't any real options for meals in the area, and while the buffet dinner is nice, it would get expensive every night for a longer stay. That said, the bungalows have small fridges so you could stock up on basics if you needed. After two stays, I'd go back.

We spent one night at the Koulnoue Village during our trip across Grande Terre. We had a warm welcome and our bungalow was nice, cleaned and very spacious as it was a family accomodation with four beds. The location is amazing; beautiful garden full of palms surrounded by high black rocks on one side and sea and beach on the other. The buffet restaurant is very good and it is pleasent and relaxing having dinner/breakfast outside hearing the noise of the waves. I will deifinately suggest this hotel and Hienghene, with its vicinity, are amazing!
