I and my two boys aged 8 and 12 spent two nights here in November.
Before coming I spent a great deal of time worrying about snakes, mosquitoes and alike. Actually we didn’t see many mosquitoes during our stay. We also slept far better than I had feared beforehand and I felt very safe in the middle of nowhere.
We saw a lot of different animals. Three beautiful leopards of which one was pregnant. Crocodiles, elephants, a rat snake, a scorpion (right beside the tent in the evening), monkeys, peacocks, a civet cat, jackals, hares, giant squirrels, monitor lizards, buffalos, eagles, kingfishers and other birds, wild boars and many deers.
We also saw a fight between a cobra and a mongoose, which is a rare and an extremely interesting sighting.
We were the only visitors at the camp site. The tent was nice and elevated, so there were no animals in the tent. Only some insects, but as there were mosquito nets, this was not a problem. Flashlights were provided. The toilet was inside the tent which was also a very nice feature. The shower consisted of a barrel with brownish water from the river. Lovely and refreshing. Drinking water was provided.
The food was also very lovely. The chef is from the Amaya hotels. Normally I never eat salads when traveling, but here we could do so. There were 4 courses for lunch and dinner; Salad, soup, meat and dessert.
There were 2 trackers in the jeep. One of them had 35 years of experience. Milinda told me that if you go by one of the day safari jeeps, up to 5 cars often share one tracker and the cars have to drive in convoy style. Most of the time our jeep was the only one on the roads. As we saw our first leopard, there were a lot of other cars waiting in a tailback though.
Milinda’s English is very good and he is kind and helpful. The entire team is very nice and accommodating. My two boys who love animals were invited to the front seats of the jeep.
This is not a cheap holiday and we had been considering just to do a normal safari ride for a few hours. We are very happy that we decided to stay this way. It was fantastic to be in the tent at night and hear the sound of the river and the animals outside. We spent an entire day outside the tent sitting at the table and relaxing in the hammock doing home work and making some drawings for school.
All in all this is a great trip into the wild and at the same time you feel very protected, kind of 5-star in the jungle. This combination suited us perfectly.
The nature is very close by: One night we were having dinner in the dark and suddenly we heard a giant splash from the river. It turned out to be a crocodile. Later that night there was a leopard chasing some monkeys right near the tent and we heard the alarm calls of the monkeys. We could see some leopard foot prints maybe 70 meters from the tent the following morning.
We loved staying at Milinda’s camp site and we would definitely come back for another stay.
