“Gorgeous hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for one night on our way back to Santander to explore some bodegas. My parents had been before having discovered Jesus in a Malcolm Gluck article. The bodega tour is really interesting and Jesus has a most charming way about him. The new puppy kept my daughter entertained (although I am flip flopless as a result!). The rooms are modern and they really have made an effort to make the accomodation work for visitors. The breakfast was great and cannot be faulted. As for the wine. Our car is now full of it and I'm sure we will be back again to stock up and explore more of Rioja. All in all a real gem of a hotel.

Such a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the Rioja countryside. Jesus and his family are wonderful hosts. He gave a tour of the winery which was very informative and very personal. The rooms were wonderful, the pool is quite large, and the atmosphere peaceful and quiet. We kept the windows open at night and let the cool breezes blow through. There are only six guest rooms, and all the guests seem happy. One word of warning on conveniences in the area: be prepared to pay with Visa or cash (not Mastercard or Amex) - there are no cash machines nearby! Otherwise, this was one of our favorite places in Spain.

Abalos is a tiny village in the middle of the strikingly beautiful La Rioja. Hospederia del Vino is a bit difficult to find, but thanks to a previous reviewer giving clues, we were able to find our way up the tiny streets of this village to our destination. For those of you driving with a GPS device, find the coordinates and use them....it will save you time and possibly your marriage. Once we got to the bodega, the surrounding view is breathtaking, but it was the warmth and friendliness of Jesús Puelles upon our arrival that was a precursor to a wonderful stay for the next 3 days. This is a family owned and operated bodega, and you come away really getting to know this amazing family and their fabulous wines.  In our opinion, the Puelles wines are some of the best we have enjoyed from the Rioja AOC designation.

The amenities at Hospederia del Vino are great and all the rooms look out onto the vineyard. A very nice touch here was an elevator to the rooms on the second floor; very nice if you happen to have heavy suitcases! There is a pool and jacuzzi and a sitting area to unwind, or you can enjoy the premises outside with a glass of wine. You will need a little pre-planning regarding restaurants as dinner isn't an option at Hospederia del Vino.  Jesus is quite knowledgeable about the local restaurants, and he will guide you accordingly.

Three generations of the Puelles family live and work this bodega. They take great pride in what they do. It is a labor of love and their family has been making fabulous wines for many years. Take the tour of the winery offered by Jesús, it is informative and interesting, even for the most knowledgeable oenophiles. It is while standing in the vineyards, the afternoon winds come barreling down the mountain. It is difficult not to fall in love with this place!

We tasted all the wines made here, but we especially enjoyed the 1999 Gran Reserva. It is an outstanding example of one of La Rioja' s signature wines. The 2004 Zenus (which is not made every year) was also excellent.  They are currently in the process of expanding this facility and Jesús proudly shares his vision for his bodega. Each night we enjoyed sharing wine and stories with the members of the Puelles family and the other guests staying here. We may all live in different parts of the world, but here, we are all part of the Puelles family.

If you have the time to explore this area of La Rioja, Abalos is very close to the wine museum in Briones. Even the most seasoned wine affIcionados will find new and interesting things to see here. It has been chosen as the best wine museum in the world. It is impressive! Abalos is also very close to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, which is linked to the pilgrimage of St. James.

Three days was not long enough to explore this part of La Rioja or to enjoy what Hospederia del Vino and the Puelles family have to offer.  We will return soon.

Saw the great reviews at TA and went there for one night. Jesus was very friendly as his lovely mother-in-law. The place is so cute and you feel at home there. Jesus showed us around the winery and explained both processes and history. Highly recommendable. Try Casa Toni in the village close by -recommended by Jesus and very delicious food.

Great place to base yourself for a visit to La Rioja, not far to drive to the other wineries and better still you are staying at a winery! Jesus Puelles has built outstanding accommodation on his vineyard and it is beautiful. The hospitality extended to his guests is warm and genuine. We thoroughly enjoyed a tour of his winery, drinking his fabulous wine, relaxing in the heated pool after a hard day of sightseeing and the fabulous breakfast that is provided. There is no restaurant on site for dinner but there are restaurants nearby. There are 2 kitchens which you are free to use whenever you like, the one off the delightful terrace is stocked with great Puelles white wine in the fridge, which was perfect for sipping and watching the sunset over La Rioja. Will be back!!!!!

My wife and I stayed here for a few days in July 2012. Jesus and his wife were friendly and accommodating. The room was comfortable and as there were few other guests, we had almost private use of the pool, kitchen and sun room. Breakfast was included and was delicious. Jesus gave a very nice tour of his winery and we sampled several wines. After we booked our rooms, we decided to spend a night in the middle of our stay in Pamplona in order to attend the San Fermin festival. We kept the room, but when it came time to check out, Jesus refused to charge us for it.

Abalos was a bit challenging for us to find, but the town is quaint and well located. It was interesting how windy the property became each afternoon. The slight downside was that there was construction on the property, which could be a bit noisy at times.

We only stayed one night but Jesus was a fantastic host and his home and winery are beautiful. We were the only guests that night so we had the place to ourselves. The heated indoor pool, jacuzzi and steam room are such a nice way to unwind overlooking the vineyards. The room and bathroom was very nice and great touch to have the shampoo and body wash made from wine extracts! The only negative was that we saw a few ants in the room, but I guess that can be expected in the country side.
Jesus took the time to give us a tour of the winery which was really interesting. He enthusiastically explained the process from the vines to bottling to tasting. He gave us recommendations for lunch and dinner, wineries to visit, and nearby towns to see. Overall we had a great time and would highly recommend staying here during a trip to the Rioja region.
