“We just love returning to this pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2010

I have stayed at the Tower Bank Arms on several occasions with my husband and another couple - between us we have three dogs, and both adults and dogs have always been welcomed and made to feel at home. The breakfast is exceptional made from fresh, local ingredients and the evening meals are always top quality. After a long day walking on the fells in often wet conditions, there is nothing better than returning to the pub and relaxing in front of the log fire with a glass of mulled wine or a local beer. In fact we can't wait for our next visit later this year.

Cant agree with previous reveiw, found owner/staff most welcome and helpful, room was small but clean and in total keping with the size of the building, food excellant, breakfast will last you most of the day, local beers a must and dog (no charge) made very welcome. Pub got busy Fri and Sat night but as guests made to feel that little bit more special so much so that we booked another weekend there before we'd finished this one. Highly recommend.

We have not actually used the Tower Bank Arms as a hotel, but have camped in the area regularly this year and used it as a local for food and drink etc.
It is in a lovely spot, and is family and animal friendly, there are a range of hand pulled local beers on offer of which we sampled a few. The food was excellent at all times, and the chef was more than helpful with any requests over meals.
The pub has a great atmosphere when it is filled with locals on an evening and the log fire on chilly days.
We have been quite a few times over the last 2 years or so, and it still has the same team in the kitchen as when we first called there, probably the reason the food is so consistent.
Front of house staff have come and gone over this time, and standards have slipped badly. Gone is the uniform worn by staff, we were served by girls in belly tops hot pants etc, and they could not be distinguished from customers. You had to go to the bar for anything in case you were actually asking a customer.
The waitress's bar staff etc were very freindly and helpful, we even got a lift with the chef one night when our taxi failed to turn up.
The only thing that stops this pub being a great little pub, is the attitude of the owner, who seems to think that he is doing you a favour by bothering to serve you, not that he should be grateful for your custom and encourage you to come back.
We feel standards of tidyness among serving staff have been let slide.

I think the chef in all the other reviews must have been having a night off.
We didn't stay here but had a very unpleasant meal. Having waited 45 minutes from when we started counting we thought it would be beautiful. My husband had the 'special' which was unrecognisable as pork loin with melted blue cheese and looked like a shoe sole. My lamb tasted OK but everything came piled on a plate with a huge boiled parsnip draped across it and cold hard carrots.
I'm really sorry to say all this but we ate a small amount and paid up and left. We were not offered any reduction or asked why we left it.
I did indicate that all was not well we had a long wait but nothing.
I know its had good reviews so I'm sorry to be fussy but it was complete disappointment.

We have stayed there a couple of times and NEVER been dissappointed!
The food, beer and whole atmosphere is top notch.
Go for the Home-made Beef Stew - FAB!
Also if our dog (Daisy) could speak she would also reccommend the lovely spot by the real fire

Had a great stay in the Tower Bank. Room was nice and clean (bathroom a little worn) but otherwise very good. Food excellent - breakfast very good and evening meals also.

What a pleasure to find a place to stay in the UK that is not just tolerates dogs but really welcomes them. There’s even a basked of dog biscuits on the bar - and us humans were treated pretty well too!

The Tower Bank Arms is an attractive, small traditional pub located next to Beatrix Potter’s House (give that a miss as it’s pretty disappointing and not well presented) in the lovely village of Sawrey located between Windermere and Esthwaite Water. The village is busy with tourists for the house during the day – but not annoyingly so but lovely and quiet at night. There are good walks from the pub to several local lakes / tarns.

The Tower Bank has excellent breakfasts and serves hearty dinners. Though dinners could do with a little more finesse and a bit less substance! But at only £83 a night B&B per couple including the dog in high season you can’t go wrong. The room was well appointed with hairdryer, flat screen TV and tea / coffee and biscuits plus good reading lights – something often sadly lacking in even the luxury hotels. The bathroom, while small, had good toiletries and clean towels every day. We were told that as we had booked only a week before we had the smallest room and the others were bigger – but it was fine for 3 nights.

The landlord was really helpful in telling us where good walks and drives were and rooms have a waterproof map for the use of guests – fortunately for us the rain kept away and we stayed dry. It’s an ideal base for touring the lakes and only 30 minutes from the M6 via the Windermere ferry – but miles away from the crass commerciality of Windermere.

I would definitely recommend it.
