“Beyond expectations of peace and quiet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2011

Country relaxation, four wonderful dogs, tasty breakfasts, great dining recommendations, very new facilities, beautiful pool. What more could you ask for? The price was right. Value and location for day trips in this part of Sicily. Expect a new, but small size shower which was our experience in both rooms. Get directions from their website and not Google maps. We found it, but it was the long way around.

Room Tip: We stayed in La Cucina and our friends stayed next door. Both were well appointed.

This being our first overseas travel, we are extremely grateful to have chosen to stay here. Lawrence and Chiara are a delightful couple who are genuine and caring in their endeavors to make guests feel welcome and relaxed. This farm retains old world charm in its' buildings and grounds and still offers modern day conveniences. Wi-Fi was greatly appreciated to be offered in such a rural setting. Morning breakfast was very special in all ways of taste and variety of Sicilian offerings. Should we ever be fortunate to return to Sicily we will return and this time stay longer than the five nights we did.

Room Tip: Because we stayed an extra night, we moved to another room which was just as nice as what we had the...

La Casa di Melo is an old farmstead gradually being lovingly restored---and beautifully updated. The rooms are delightful and the bathrooms sumptuous. Our room was brand new when we slept in it in the spring, the result of the transformation of an old stable---the stone manger (sandblasted to perfection) remained as a feature of the room. Host Lorenzo (Chiara was away at work for much of our stay) was kind and helpful, and readily accommodated several probably unusual requests (one was for a drying rack to dry our hand-washed clothes.)

The very best thing about this excellent Agriturismo were the breakfasts! They were our absolute favourite breakfasts in Sicily. I suspect we ate the best breakfasts at La Casa di Melowe that have ever had during our travels anywhere. The marmalade made here is absolutely the best marmalade I have ever had in my life. I am still savouring the last of the jar I brought home with me!

The orchard setting is lovely. We were there too early for the pool to be ready, but it looked inviting in the (for us) very warm and sunny spring.

We found it very easy to get to initially, and to get home to every night, but yes, you need a car. We spent 5 days here and could have stayed even longer. It's an easy drive out to countless day trips: Noto, Noto Antica, Siracusa, Villa Romana del Tellaro (mosaics just as fine as the Villa Romana del Casale and much easier to get to!), Vendicari nature reserve, Cava Grande, Avola Antica, and about a hundred other places we didn't have time to see, but will next time.

The nearest town, Cassibile, is not 'pretty' but has the essentials in terms of food and gas, and provides another view of "the real Sicily." We did have great pizza there---look for Blume Pizzeria half-hidden down a side street, or ask for directions in hand signals! The locals are friendly!

Beautiful spot to sit, rest, sip wine and watch sunset below mountains. Fabulous breakfast, comfortable rooms. Hosts very helpful in terms of sights to see and restaurants in area. Better if they also provided lunch and dinner!
Kind of secluded and difficult to find initially. Need a car.
Nearby Noto with the best gelato, Mt Etna and Golla Dell'Alcantra with very cold water and stunning gorges.

I chose Casa di Melo based on all of the excellent reviews. It exceeded our expectations. The grounds are more beautiful in person than in photos. The owners Chiara and Lorenzo are always visible and attentive to their guests' needs. Their staff is very friendly, especially Giusi who helps serve breakfast. The dogs are part of the experience. We have two young children who looked forward to seeing Melo, Bilo, and Panella every day. They already miss Bilo and want to go back again next year!

We spent three nights here and had dinner one night. We found Casa Di Melo a wonderfully friendly place to stay. The pool was most welcome with temperatures in the high 30s. The dinner was great. It's an easy drive to parking in Siracusa and also easy to visit places like Noto. There are four resident dogs so if dogs make you nervous ... Otherwise an excellent place to stay.

We had a great 4 night stay at La Casa di Melo. The farm is beautiful with orchards all around, and the property has been lovingly restored by Kiera and Lawrence and their hardworking staff. Karima int he kitchen is always with a smile and never says no for any request.

Our kids loved the 4 dogs, and still remember puppy Bilo and miss him. The hosts are always ready with tips and suggestions, and go out of their way to make the stay wonderful.

All in all, understand that this is a working farm, and not a hotel. There will be animal sounds, people working, and minor inconsistencies. That is the charm of agriturismo for me. If you understand this and want to experience it, Melo is one of the best places to try.

Room Tip: The apartments with balconies!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
La Casa di Melo is an ancient Sicilian farmhouse, built at the beginning of the 19th century. It's surrounded by a luxuriant organic citrus plantation, the green lung of our 150 hectares farm. My father, Giuseppe, taught me that living in a cleaner environment, along with eating better and respecting nature, are the basics for a better and happier life, with a lighter impact on the environment. That's why we decided to renovate the farmhouse. We are a family and we run this place with the goal to make you feel at home, sharing our love for nature and our respect for the environment. In the property we have 6 dogs living in totally freedom so if you are scared of dogs or looking for an all-inclusive place, an ordinary b&b, this place is not for you. ... more   less
