“Lovely luncheon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

I had a very enjoyable family lunch at The Bartley Lodge Hotel over the weekend. The restaurant had a very welcoming atmosphere, the staff very helpful and friendly and the food superb.
We then enjoyed a relaxing coffee in the beautiful lounge area. We couldn't fault anything and will definitely be recommending to others. Looking forward to another visit soon.

Wanted a last minute getaway with the g/f and dog and this chain popped up - knowing that we could not leave the dog in the hotel to go out for dinner I was hoping that the restaurant would be adequate. It really wasnt - very average food, exceptionally bad waiting staff compounded by a million wasps for breakfast. The rest of the hotel - check in / room was absolutely fine but some simple training for the waiting staff and chef could have made this an altogether better experience.

I've read a few of the reviews from people who stayed at the hotel and cannot comment on the upstairs rooms, as living not too far away, I did not have to stay after the wedding. My review might therefore mainly be of benefit for those planning their own wedding receptions at this hotel.

The hotel was chosen by my daughter for the reception and it has a convenient location just a few hundred yards off the end of the M27 motorway, handy also for people doing breaks in the New Forest area. As a venue for a wedding reception, I couldn't fault it. As father of the bride, I met the hotel's wedding organiser the week before to discuss final arrangements. I got the impression that my daughter had been pleased with her liaison with her and she certainly seemed to be very on the ball and meticulous, I understand having had experience in America.

First impressions of the environment, the exterior and the entire groundfloor were very favourable. The reception meal was to be served in the atmospheric Baronial hall, beautifully clad in dark wood panelling and with crystal chandeliers, the tables beautifully dressed, chair covers in a colour of the bride's choice, it looked very elegant.

The meal was very good and everybody I spoke to enjoyed their chosen selection of starter, main and dessert. The champagne and canapes on arrival were good, as was the choice of red and white wines with the meal.

After the meal, the room was cleared and readied for the disco in the evening and as the weather was obliging, it was pleasant to mingle with the other guests on the terrace. A decent buffet was laid out in the bar that was for our use adjacent to the dining room, which made a decent place to enjoy the evening's dancing.

Whether the noise from the disco might disturb other guests, who knows? But I would have no qualms in recommending the hotel as a venue for a wedding reception. My ratings can only therefore apply to the ground floor rooms, not for a stay.

Do not be deceived by the grandeur of the lower floors, upstairs is a shabby old knacker!
We were transferred here from another hotel in the New Forest Chain, due to similar problems. The lower floors are beautifully elegant, with paneled sitting rooms and a tasteful, sophisticated dining room, but the bedrooms will make you feel very sad :(

The first room we were given was tiny and grim. There was lipstick on the bed sheets and the bedroom furniture was past being ready for the skip! These 'Agister Rooms' should be closed to guests and were not at all what they are advertised as!

We complained at reception and the manager told us that we could have another room, above a wedding. He did warn us about the loud music, that did end at midnight, and was not a problem to us, but might have been for others. The room was larger, but miserably decorated. Nothing really matched and everything was about a decade past refurbishment. The posts on the bed were covered in scars. The mattress was tired. When we opened the face cloths in the bathroom, there were dead flies in both of them. There is also nowhere to put anything in the bathroom. The water pressure in the shower ran to its own schedule.

Dinner in the restaurant: The menu is not very exciting, but there were some specials. The main course was excellent, good quality food, well presented and on hot plates. The vegetable side dish was bad. There were side plates and butter on the table, but no bread rolls were offered. The dessert looked fantastic, but parts of it smelled awful, there had obviously been some cross contamination with ....?something else...! The restaurant manager dealt with this problem very well and was incredibly polite and professional.

At breakfast, we had to get up and ask for tea and coffee and had to ask for toast three times. The crockery was grubby. Once again, the same restaurant manager: Heidi, was very professional and efficient. However, the rest of the restaurant staff have absolutely no idea about how to deal with clients. They are very young and need some serious training in speaking to people properly, being dynamic and dealing with problems.

We had to fight for a decent standard at every step of the way, it was like a constant battle. After I broke down in reception, due to having our weekend break ruined by the quality of New Forest Hotels, we were given our evening meals for free.

This hotel survives on wedding functions and the rest of the hotel is poor.

Book at your own risk. Most people are not prepared to accept this kind of standard any more.

Room Tip: Ask for refurbished room and pay the extra for an upgrade.

A wedding party at the hotel on Saturday 20th July meant that regular guests were neglected. The way in which our complaint has been handled has also been less than pleasing, with the hotel management seemingly not interested that we had stayed at the hotel 5 times! The wedding party completely took over the terraced area meaning that other guests could not use the terraced area. We mentioned to restaurant staff that after our meal we would like to sit in the terraced area. Old garden furniture was placed between the hedging at tennis court (for the wedding, an overflow car park). Why did the management believe that we would pay full price to have a view of the car park and old hedge, what a cheek!

A warm evening meant that we obviously wanted to sleep with our window open, however we were in room 6 which appears to have been directly above the wedding party. Laughter and other noise could be heard well onto the early hours.

We came away for a relaxing stay. We didn't pay Travelodge prices. The website makes no mention that if a Wedding was at the hotel, the terraced area would be unavailable and guests would be hidden behind the unlit hedge and overflow car park!

I also waited 20 mins to be served at the bar, when it was my turn to be served, there was no draught Stella, Becks or Jack Daniels, or Ice!!!! How ridiculous!

Wedding parties should either have exclusive use of the hotel or the hotel should reserve an area on the terrace for bread and butter guests.

We have stayed at Bartley Lodge with you several times over the years, providing the hotel owners with custom before the refurbishment and extension, the most recent stay was our fifth stay with you, however it's likely we will stay at another hotel in the forest next time around.

Why have we waited till now to post this? We wrote and complained to the hotel who offered a discount off a future stay. This was not good enough given that we had spent over 400 pound and experienced a poor experience. The management refused to respond to our point that it was unacceptable to have put regular customers off the terrace in favour of the wedding party. The hotel said that most people enjoyed the stay however this was not our experience. Another couple from Kent also felt let down, and were also regular customers at the hotel. Another couple had to sit on the grass as they did not want to sit behind the hedge, and lastly when we checked out another couple said that they were also cheesed off about the situation.

It's a shame because this experience completely overshadow the fact that the food quality and rooms are generally very good.

Beware, ask when you book if there is a wedding party in residence during your stay. If there is it is likely your view of the garden will not be the one on the website but the one on the attached picture.

Room Tip: Not room 6 unless you are part of the Wedding

Thank you for your review. As mentioned in our letter we are sorry for the disturbances experienced by the wedding being held at the hotel during your stay. As stated, we do cordon off an area outside the Orangery for Residents, however due to the exceptionally hot weather the wedding guests chose to sit in the garden and overflowed into this area. The general manager arranged for 4 tables to be set up near the tennis courts, away from the noise of the wedding and children. Some of our other guests commented how peaceful it was to be sitting in this area, but I am sorry you felt neglected. We do endeavour to allocate rooms that are with the wedding above the function rooms, however this is not always possible when the hotel is very busy.

My children and I stayed the August bank holiday week. We had a really enjoyable time. The hotel is very pretty with lovely gardens. The pool is rather small but my children loved splashing around for hours. The family room was a bit hot at night but weather was very muggy. The dining room was very elegant and I loved the chandeliers. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Stuart the general manager made us feel very welcome and like it was home from home. I loved sitting in the fabulous terrace area with a glass of wine, overlooking the gardens while the children played on the lawns with garden jenga, croquet and chess. We had a lovely relaxing time and would definitely go back.
