Owner description: Knowsley Safari Park was opened to the public in July 1971 by the 18th Earl of Derby. Then, the `safari park' concept of having visitors in cages (cars) and the animals roaming free based on the drive-through game reserves of East Africa was unique. In 1994, Edward Stanley, the 19th Earl, succeeded to the title. The estate being only 8 miles (13 km) from Liverpool city centre, Knowsley was the first safari park to be built close to a large city. In spite of some understandable apprehension about the possible problems associated with large numbers of animals (including lions) roaming about close to the city, the then County and District councils approved the proposals. In the first two years of opening, the route through Knowsley Safari Park consisted of a 3½ mile (5.6 km) drive, and the main attractions were lions, cheetahs, monkeys, giraffes, zebra, elephants and various antelopes. The park proved immensely popular, so in 1973 an extension, including a further 1½ miles (2.4km) of road, was built and opened. This allowed more animals to be added to the collection on display along the now 5-mile- (8 km) long route, including herds of camels, buffalo and white rhino as well as a group of tigers.A few modifications to the original design have had to be made for safety and display reasons. The tigers and lions are now displayed in enclosures within the game reserves, and the elephants have their own paddock in the walk around section at the end of the safari drive. We also have a car friendly route around the outside of the monkey jungle for visitors who do not wish to have a close encounter with our baboons. Knowsley Safari Park has become one of Merseyside's premier leisure attractions, winning several awards for tourism and it's animal husbandry.

“Very cold but still very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013 via mobile

The whole family really enjoyed the day out, especially how close the lions were to the car!!. Also went along to the sealion show which was really entertaining and funny for the kids. All the rides were open but due to the cold weather not able to go on them.

“Family Fun!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

Our kids enjoyed the most as it was a family day out. We were a group of 8, and all of us enjoyed equally. Unlike other zoos and Safari Parks, this one is well maintained and is very clean. This is of my kind of entertainment as I love to enjoy with friends and children. Had a lovely time. Will certainly go back and recommend to all!

“The animals always seem depressed.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

All my memories of this place are it being grey and full of depressed sleeping animals (if you're lucky - most of them hide) that don't like English weather. The only enthusiastic ones are the monkeys at the end who crap all over your car. I'd rather do safari in a place where the animals are supposed to live.

“Really good day out and excellent value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

We went to Knowsley Safari Park on the way back from Liverpool. We hadn't planned to visit but thought we'd give it a visit. We were pleasantly surprised at the price of £10 each. Absolute bargain! Yes the rides weren't open but we wouldn't have bothered anyway.

The actual safari was excellent, plenty of animals to see and surprisingly large. The lions were amazingly close and it was nice to see some lion cubs! The baboons were brilliant, however it would be advisable not to drive through if you have a new car or you are particularly attached to your car because they were more than happy to sit on the vast majority of cars. Our car was covered in mud but it was well worth going through for the experience!

The sea lions were also superb, a short show demonstrates what they're capable of and guy who presented the show was informative without being boring. Well worth a visit.

The giraffes were a slight disappointment as it was too cold and they were in the shed, which we visited but it would have been nice to have seen them walking about. However it's completely understandable considering the weather.

We got a portion of chips and a few drinks which came to just over £5, which for a large attraction, is fine. The shop was ok, however we only ended up being a magnet because most of the merchandise was aimed at children which is fine.

If we were in the region again we would definitely consider visiting again. I have already recommended the park to several friends. Keep up the good work!
