“A NIGHT IN CODICOTE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

This hotel is now called The Bell Motel. New owners took over last year and updated the rooms.
The motel consists of a number of chalets at the rear of the Pub set in pleasant gardens with ample car parking spaces. The rooms are clean and pleasant with flat screen TV and now well-decorated. Very quiet surroundings. Codicote is a lovely friendly village with a few shops, restaurants and pubs.
The pub itself is very friendly and welcoming used by locals, contractors and residents. Good selection of drinks and food. Large screen TV. There is a separate quiet area restarant where a really hearty breakfast is served.

Room Tip: You should be able to park the outside your room.

We spent a night here at the end of October - room 1. I should have read Trip Advisor first I should have boooed a taxi home!

Room was musty and very cold. Whlist the bed was comfortable we found it difficult to sleep with the fire alarm system casting an eerie green over the complete room all night. Bathroom was dirty and I certainly had no intention of usisng the shower.

Staff were not very helpful as they appeared to be attached to the Pub and couldn't help with any issues guests had with the rooms.

I will definitely not go back and will go to the Novotle 4 miles away next time I have to stay over around this area!

Room Tip: There does not appear to be one.

Don't even contemplate staying here ! Filthy rooms ,smelly damp bathrooms only that we booked in late ,thankfully for only one night we would not have stayed at all. The bar feels cold and stark. We only stayed because we had bee recommended by someone who had stayed when it was called the rustic pub . Went to Welwyn to eat and did not even bother with breakfast
as if the public areas are not acceptable in cleanliness Whats the kitchen like ? The place should be shut down .

Room Tip: go somewhere else

Cold, damp smelly and cheap!
The floors are laminate, the bed was broken, the heating was archaic, the hanging space a wardrobe with doors removed. The TV was antique, no remote, channels were basic and no aeriel made the programmes snowy to view and hard to hear.
The bathroon taps were scaled and water streaked, the toilet pan needed a good clean, the tiles around the bath were dirty and grimy and grouting needed replacing.
The room was cold and when the heater was put on the smell was of dust from it and the heat rose straight up through the curtains and not the room. Towel rail had warning on it that it would get extremely hot,, didn't even get warm.
The person in charge when i spoke to him smelt of alcohol and was very rude when i went to complain, he said he'd view the room, saying it had been the coldest day so far, all the more reason to have heating on for guests arrival. He said the tv was old. Looking at the pictures on the site it is not representetive of the place we visited.
Stark white walls in the bar and tables weren't set for fine dining at all.
The one thing which was nice and we couldn't complain about was the young woman working there. She even apologised as i left.
Humiliating experience, disgusted by managers attitude and would not recommend at all!

When we arrived the man we presume is in charge, as he didn't introduce himself gave us a run down of the bar meal times. Newly painted a stark White we sat and ate a nice meal of lamb shank and whole ribs. We had 2 pints of coke and a 2 Malibu and coke and added it to be paid in the morning when we left. We went to our room, no 4 and was totally surprised to enter what appeared to be no more than a shed with curtains. It was musty and damp smelling. The hanging closet was double wardrobe with no doors, cheap and tacky. The bathroom even with towel rail on was freezing with no window covering. The floor is laminate throughout, the bed was old and rock hard when we sat on it. The bedroom put me in mind of a detention centre. No comforts, a wall heater which when turned on stunk of dust. I returned to bar after 5 minutes to say we couldn't stay there as it was damp, cold and unwelcoming. The man in charge said he would look at the room. He said it smelt damp cause it hadn't been used for days, when I said the tv had no remote and the picture was snowy, has he noticed, he replied with "it's old!" I said sorry but we're not staying in here and was then told you can have a refund, just pay your bar bill and go!!! Charmer! £38.90. The pictures of this place are not a true depiction of anything that's there. No comforts in bar and those awful large screens everywhere with football on constantly. I can't put I really want as it is too rude, I'm disgusted with the whole sorry mess of a place and it's manager.....

Room Tip: If at all possible get some one to check hotel out first, or when you arrive make sure it's what...

We myself my partner and daughter stayed six nights at The Bell, the service was mediocre, the lack of effort was plain to see, boxes left on the floor for days on end, breakfast missing items every day (ran out of marmalade on the friday, still none on the sunday two shops in sight from the front door both selling it). Room cleanlyness good rooms could do with a coat of paint. The thing that as a qualified chef realy got me was when asking for crispy bacon it was deep fried (if you have never tried deep fried bacon a word of advice DON'T) As this was the only trip away this year felt let down. The best thing about staying there is it's close proximity to The Goat a pub of the first order.

We used the Bell Motel as a stop over after visiting freinds the day before. The accommodation consists of a number of motel style chalet rooms at the back of the public house. The rooms were clean and tidy and good value for money. We did try to get breakfast in the morning in the main pub. We were one of the first to arrive and ordered off the menu. We waited and waited. There seemed to be a steady flow of orders coming out of the kitchen and then being sent back because they were wrong. The people on the next table, who were first in the breakfast room, did eventually get their order but it was cold. We complained to the waitress that we had waited a long time and waited again. The breakfast never did arrive and we decided to go elsewhere. What a shame.
