“Another great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013 via mobile

Once again we were welcomed at The Lugger with great food, excellent wine, good service and even fantastic weather at both extremes. It was our anniversary (having got married in The Lugger last year) and so we splashed out on the best room ( and we have tried quite a few now!). This room is in fact a small cottage near the hotel with its own kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. The rooms are comfy and the servicing excellent. Orla Kiely toiletries made a change from the ones previously. Our only disappointment was no pirate hot water bottles in the turn down- which was the most talked about point by our guests last year! If you are looking for a quiet, romantic break with good food, wine and service with great views then this is the place!

Blessed with such a beautifully unique and quintessentially Cornish location, it would be a travesty if such a hotel didn’t deliver on the hospitality side of the bargain. I am happy to report that the Lugger complemented its idyllic surroundings with service levels that made our stay as spectacular as the view from the restaurant windows. I could wax lyrical about the locale that the hotel finds itself in, but you need just look at the photographs accompanying this review to understand, truly Britain at its best! Some might say paradise blighty-style (weather permitting!) and they would not be wrong as they gaze into the crystal clear Portloe waters hugged by dramatic cliffs as the fisherman come and go in their storm stained boats.

A dinner, bed and breakfast rate of £180 per night gave us a standard room towards the top of the main hotel. The room could have been described as an attic space and was a little on the small side, but what it lacked in square footage it made up for in quality fittings and bed linen to envy. Spending a good few bob more will get you a room with a view, and not just any view! However, the hotel bar and accompanying balcony offers the same vista and can be enjoyed by all guests. The service offered throughout the hotel was pleasant and welcoming. Indeed, this was certainly the first time I have enjoyed an evening turn down service which included the offering of a bed time story and mug of hot chocolate! Small touches… big talking points… clever.

Personally for me, the food was the highlight. Nothing too avant-garde here, just well considered and lovingly put together dishes involving all the riches from the sea shore only a stone’s throw away. My smoked haddock rarebit on the first night was stunning, only to be eclipsed by the crab risotto on the second evening. The food alone is reason enough for me to return someday!

A visit to the Lugger is quite a unique experience given its surroundings, but it doesn’t rest on its laurels here. It compliments them with understated but welcoming hospitality and food that oozes consideration and love for the Cornish coastline.

We stayed here recently and were impressed by the warmth of service, the little touches such as a bottle of wine waiting for us in the room and complimentary bottles of water which were replaced as used.
The dining room, bar and lounge are quite small in size but very cosy and entirely in proportion with the size of the hotel.
What made the stay memorable was the quality of the food both for dinner and breakfast. I can imagine diners prepared to travel some distance and being prepared to tackle the narrow lanes leading to Portloe just for the pleasure of eating there.
We did not sleep in the main hotel, but in the house next door which is a very short walk away and next to the small private car park. Umbrellas are provided!
The room we had was on the small side but the bed was very comfortable.
On departure we were given a goody bag containing bottled water and sweets to refresh us on our journey home.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a private veranda.

Stayed here for two days as a party of four celebrating our daughter's birthday. The Hotel is superb with little touches that go to make your stay magical. Rooms were lovely with little treats like homemade cakes and shortbread biscuits, turndown service together with hot chocolate left for you. Food was of the highest standard, served by attentive staff, we all thoroughly enjoyed the dinners and breakfasts. Checking out we received a small bag containing fruit and water for the journey home, just another one of the small touches that make this Hotel such a delight to stay in.

Getting to Portloe and the Lugger is fun, country lanes that you think were too small for a car take you to this welcoming hotel. Sitting on the edge of the small fishing port it hangs into the sea.
We did not have a room in the main hotel but although we were anxious the room was only just in another building next to the hotel and the room was fantastic, absolutely no issues or concerns.
The main hotel is fantastic, every part of the service is classy and the staff want to ensure you have what you want when you want. Dinner is marvellous, service impeccable only matched by the best 5* restaurants we have eaten in. Breakfast is just too good, Eggs benedict indicates to me that you have a chef who understands food and they were perfect.
All this splendour is managed by Richard Hartley who seems sorry we are leaving as we settle up and hands over something for the journey, a bag containing 2 bottles of mineral water and 2 apples, see what I mean everything has been thought of.
We will be back and I don't think two nights is long enough. If you want to experience a wonderful part of this truly magnificent county then The Lugger is the perfect base.

This was a return visit to The Lugger after about 7 years, and we weren't let down. We stayed four nights in one of the more simpler rooms. This was very cosy, clean , warm and kept very tidy and together by the house keepers, our two dogs enjoyed it to ! The position of the hotel right on the beach of a very small fishing village is tremendous. With the recent gales the sea WAS angry and something to behold. Whilst sitting in the restaurant you overlook the harbour/sea. Talking about the restaurant that is another high point. The food both breakfast, but especially dinner was exceptional 5* there. Very interesting menu that changed daily, so you were always spoilt for choice, and nice wine from £20.00 a bottle. We'll certainly be going back. Top marks.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view if you really want one, but the view from our rom was good
