Visited Tolley's at the weekend with some friends. There were five of us, all ladies. There were good and bad points to the evening. Drinks quite expensive, they don't sell post-mix, so there's no coke/lemonade or soda on draught, so although a lime and soda would be a fairly cheap drink elsewhere, it was expensive as soda is sold by the bottle. A pint of lime and soda was far too much!
We were sat in the entrance, waiting for our order to be taken, all good. Waitresses very nice, polite and efficient. We were taken into the dining hall after a few minutes. Unfortunately, the waitresses were stood waiting with our starters before we even got seated, which I thought was horrible service, but obviously one the waitresses had no control over. As far as the food goes - it's very good, just not enough of it. The menu was two courses for £13. I ordered a starter and then paid a £8 supplement for fillet steak. Unfortunately, there was no ambience in the dining room. No music that could be heard and we had an older couple sat next to us, despite half the tables being empty. It meant every word we said could be heard by those sitting close to us. As a 'girls night' (and my friend's birthday) it was spoilt a little by that. Around 30 seconds after our starters were cleared, our mains arrived. We felt a little rushed to say the least! At the same time, a bigger party came in of maybe 17-18 people. Again we were amazed that the starters were being given to people before they'd even sat down. So by the time they'd figured where they were sitting, taken coats off and settled, the food had already been there for a while. The glass that was on top of the tables was annoying too, having had steak, the plates just slid around on the glass while trying to cut it. Peppercorn sauce and the vegetables were perfect though - as was the steak.
All in all, a good night and would have been better had the smaller attention to detail been paid.
Oh, and Tolleys, please ditch the horrible Peter Stringfellow style pictures of the chef surrounded by young girls/waitresses. Just awful, what were you thinking? Oh, and get a postmix!
