“Close to the river”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2011

Spent 4 nights here with 2 colleagues and found it an ok place to stay. Rooms nice and comfy with king size bed. Food average but not expensive. 2 bars in hotel open to locals. Popular hotel with contractors. Sadly no wifi in the annex

Room Tip: Rooms in main part of hotel get free wi-fi. Rooms at the back get a good river view

Lets start by saying if you want 5 star luxury this is not the place for you. However if you want somewhere clean with a comfy bed and great transport links book it. I had a great size room with a river view. Bathroom was a good size with a decent shower. Tea, coffee and biscuits in the rooms. Ok the rooms may need a lick of paint however for the money you can't beat it. I have stayed in several hotels around the Purfleet/Lakeside area and this one offers the best value. 5 Mins from the M25 or A13. Train station is 5-10 mins walk and you can get into Fenchurch St in 25 mins. If you want shops Lakeside is up the road.

My only gripe is a wi-fi option in the rooms would be nice and the in room televisions need upgrading. Maybe they should invest in some freeview tv's.

However I recommend this hotel and have booked to stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view room in the annexe

The hotel is old and definitely has had its great years in the past as well as great potential as an upscale property right at the Thames River.
Let me start with a positive point, the beds are quite comfortable.
However:
My reservations for this establishment were made with the assumption that the accomodations were according to the hotel description. The hotel site mentions recently refurbished and restored bedrooms with free wifi. What a disappointment it is to find out that this is a plain lie!!!
The hotel management may have plans to renovate the rooms, but none of the rooms haven't had any maintenance in decades. Plaster coming from the wall, lighting not working, mold in the bathrooms, terribly squeeking floors, ripped curtains and drapes, hardly any water coming out of the shower.
The wifi in the rooms also proved a lie, only in downstairs close to the reception. hotels.com mentioned possibilities for wake up calls, could be, but you need a phone present in the room.
We had plans to try the breakfast, but a continental breakfast, consisting of a box of cereal for GBP 5,- is rediculous. My breakingpoint was reached, when I noticed the dirty babies diapers being changed inside the restaurant. A simple sorry will not do!
The hotel bar is mainly used as a local pub. It needs some interior decoration to give it a somewhat more friendly, hotellike atmosphere.
the hotel staffare not interrested and attentive to complaints, but this may be caused by the fact that the hotel is totally run down and in desperate need of renovation.
Alltogether: This has been the worst hotel, I have ever stayed in, don't go there unless you are in for a horror story.

Me and my husband wanted something out of centre london, but easily accessible and this was perfect, a nice hotel, extremely friendly and clean and superb affordable food. Would totally recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Twin rooms look out over the thames, nice view, you can put the beds together.

First off, the look of the outside of the building is run down
Then no signs for receptions or way of calling anyone to reception
we were staying for a wedding and the couple had arranged a "special discount" however this involved paying more than I could have got it online on several sites.
But it gets worse, we were put in the seperate building where a lot of the rooms appear to be, however this building is even more tired than the main building IMO hasn't been touched in 20 years.
The Room
Start with the good points
Size was good
Sheets were clean

now to the bad points
Decoration was terrible, marks all over the walls thin old carpet, bathroom floor looked like it was falling apart, bath panel was a badly cut piece of ply wood, some tiles had been replaced with ones that didn't match the rest, shower was old fashion and the bath filled with water when having a shower.
Also there was NO WIFI in these rooms, the main building does appear to have WIFI but not the seperate building
TV was a small 14inch portable in the corner of the room with only the non-digital terrestial channels.
Also bad lighting, one ceiling light right by the door and thats it, except two bedside table lights and a light above the mirror by the desk/dressing table.

Breakfast
We paid extra for the breakfast at about £7 each per day
Although the rather useless employee running the breakfast service really needed a good customer service course, and although we paid for the breakfasts at the time of signing in, there appeared no record of this.
The "buffet" part of the breakfast had very little so if you dont choose the full english option when paying you will be very very very disappointed with the "selection" no pastrys on the second day, very little fruit or yogurts
The English breakfast was ok, one egg, one very cheap sausage, one cheap hash brown, two bacon, half a grilled tomato, some mushrooms and beans.
Toast was good bread however most of the time was served cold and with butter straight from the fridge.

All in all a terrible hotel with terrible staff

Have stayed at this hotel many times. Its cheap and decent. The new owners have done a lot of work in 2011 and its looking good. The decor was tired but now looks loads better. My only gripe now is the food. When I last stayed, most of the menu was off.The price I felt was high for what you got.Drop the prices or give better quality .I was told where as I could have the mixed grill, there was no steak. However they wasnt going to reduce the price.Seems a little bit mad.
