We spent one night here as part of a vacation package and were not impressed. I did not see the front desk staff smile once while we were there. We checked in at 5pm, and had dinner at 7pm. After dinner I went to the reception desk to ask about using travellers checks and the woman asked if we were guests at the hotel...the place was pretty deserted and we had just checked in 3 hours prior! Then she said she would have to charge me 3.50 per check service fee, and pointed out that not many people take travellers checks in Ireland, they would be charged by the bank, etc. To be honest, they didn't look like they needed the 3.50 per check, not to mention the info book in the room said they would be happy to cash checks, including travellers checks! They seemed like very unhappy people.

In contrast, the dinner in the River Room was perfection, with attentive staff and excellent food from start to finish.

We had better service and were made to feel welcome in the B&B's. We were very happy we had not paid to stay here, because they made us feel unwelcome. That's not 5 star service, that's stuffiness. It took away from all the friendliness we experienced everywhere else in Ireland.

Some of the comments mentioned about Glenlo Abbey I would certainly not agree with. The last comment regarding it being stuffy...sorry but I dont see where you're coming from!
We came across Glenlo via firstly the WWW and then happend across it on our way to Clifden. We had two nights B&B which were fairly priced, generous room size with all you needed, wifi etc etc. The Pullman Restaurant is great and one of the best dining experiences ive had in my 30+ years on this earth. Sushi starter, Kevin the manager, great ambience and musical backround. The chef even came out to say hi and thanked us for coming. Come on! where do you get that???
Being from a hotel backround, i have to say that pound for pound this experience was terrific and if i'm ever back in Galway i'll definitely include Glenlo and if not, then definitely the Pullman!
Yours sincerly!

The hotel is over priced and over rated. We were very disapointed when we saw the bedrooms. They are very average and we went through four different rooms before we found beds that didn't squeak. The beds were not comfortable. The location is very inconvenient; it is an eight to ten euro cab ride to get into the center of the city. The dining room was lovely and we had a great meal but that was the best part of the stay. I would not stay there again.

We had a fantastic stay at Glenlo Abbey where we were treated like lords of the manor by considerate, professional staff. The ambiance was just right- relaxed, luxurious, refined but not stuffy.

The food was excellent- right from the breakfast buffet to the menu du jour in the fabulous River Room which overlooked a well groomed golf course and lake Corrib. The highlight of our stay however, was an evening meal in the converted Orient Express Train which has even better views and the best food I've had in a long time.

For a special hotel experience with great 5 star treatment, this is the place to stay in the west of Ireland.

A total 5 Star experience. I am amazed by the negative reviews. Showed up with children after the night flight JFK to Shannon and they could not have been more accomodating. Gave us a fabulous family breakfast after restaurants were closed and got us into the rooms early. Rooms were beautiful, food excellent, staff very helpful with every thing. I left my glasses at a castle and the staff member got the glasses brought back to the hotel before my early departure the following day. They arranged a great tour with a fabuous kid-friendly guide. Beds and bathroom are top of line. Views on the first floor, are not that great, so I'd request something higher.

Hotel is expensive, but for the first couple of days, it is a wonderful way to start the Irish experience.
