We spent one night here as part of a vacation package and were not impressed. I did not see the front desk staff smile once while we were there. We checked in at 5pm, and had dinner at 7pm. After dinner I went to the reception desk to ask about using travellers checks and the woman asked if we were guests at the hotel...the place was pretty deserted and we had just checked in 3 hours prior! Then she said she would have to charge me 3.50 per check service fee, and pointed out that not many people take travellers checks in Ireland, they would be charged by the bank, etc. To be honest, they didn't look like they needed the 3.50 per check, not to mention the info book in the room said they would be happy to cash checks, including travellers checks! They seemed like very unhappy people.
In contrast, the dinner in the River Room was perfection, with attentive staff and excellent food from start to finish.
We had better service and were made to feel welcome in the B&B's. We were very happy we had not paid to stay here, because they made us feel unwelcome. That's not 5 star service, that's stuffiness. It took away from all the friendliness we experienced everywhere else in Ireland.
