We stayed in Glenlo Abbey from Boxing Day 2007 for 2 nights, and the reason we wnt there was because we had builder at home who left us with half finished bathroom, and we didn't want a miserable week at home surrounded by builder rubble.
We chose Glenlo as we wanted a luxury, special place and I am baffled by some of the reviews on here being so low.
We booked the Conservatory Suite, which was a beautiful room with a huge panormaic window in the bedroom which was generous by any standards it also had beautiful upholstery anf furnishings, adjacent was a really nice living room, off which was the conservatory, which was upstairs and overlooking their rear garden and chapel. Fair enough we didn't have alough view, but in the midst of winter in Galway that wasn't a problem.
We ate in the Pullman Restaurant, The River Room Restaurant, and the Oak Cellar Bar. Food was great in the Pullman, but really superb in the River Room, and they were more than accomodating to create something new for the menu as we are vegetarians.
Breakfast was excellent to, and we had a vegetarian cooked breakfast, nicely presented and very tasty. All the staff were friendly and attentive here too.
Attention to detail was excellent, parts of the Hotel were reminisent of an old stately home with big fireplaces, atinque furniture, calm, relaxing, peaceful.
Highly recommended.
