We stayed in Glenlo Abbey from Boxing Day 2007 for 2 nights, and the reason we wnt there was because we had builder at home who left us with half finished bathroom, and we didn't want a miserable week at home surrounded by builder rubble.

We chose Glenlo as we wanted a luxury, special place and I am baffled by some of the reviews on here being so low.

We booked the Conservatory Suite, which was a beautiful room with a huge panormaic window in the bedroom which was generous by any standards it also had beautiful upholstery anf furnishings, adjacent was a really nice living room, off which was the conservatory, which was upstairs and overlooking their rear garden and chapel. Fair enough we didn't have alough view, but in the midst of winter in Galway that wasn't a problem.

We ate in the Pullman Restaurant, The River Room Restaurant, and the Oak Cellar Bar. Food was great in the Pullman, but really superb in the River Room, and they were more than accomodating to create something new for the menu as we are vegetarians.

Breakfast was excellent to, and we had a vegetarian cooked breakfast, nicely presented and very tasty. All the staff were friendly and attentive here too.

Attention to detail was excellent, parts of the Hotel were reminisent of an old stately home with big fireplaces, atinque furniture, calm, relaxing, peaceful.

Highly recommended.

My wife and I thought this place was wonderful. We only stayed one night, but loved the ambiance, staff, and food. Several personnel went out of their way to make our stay more interesting or comfortable. Our spacious room overlooked the "garden" and the Abbey in the morning sun.

Loved the food at the restaurant/bar downstairs, and the five-star breakfast the next morning....!!! Our table by the window overlooked the greenery of the golf course and the bay beyond, whilst impeccably-dressed service personnel attended to our every breakfast need in grand style.

The only complaint was that we could not control our own heat unit, nor the bathroom towel warmer.

This was our first night in Ireland (having driven all the way from Dublin that afternoon), and a wonderful introduction. (We did the B&B thing elsewhere, and fondly remember the Abbey's Ambiance!!)

I am usually a big fan of the SLH brand (Small Luxury Hotels of the World) and I did not hesitate to book one night at the Glenlo Abbey Hotel when my friend and I decided to visit the beautiful Connemara region earlier this month.

Quite frankly, there is absolutely NO WAY that this place deserves its 5 stars rating and I really fail to understand how it can be included in the SLH group, alongside some of the most stunning hotels on the planet .

I kind of imagined that we would be staying in a superb converted abbey in magnificent architectural surroundings, with unforgettable views of Lough Corrib - alas, I was quite far from the truth. The Glenlo is actually a relatively ugly building sitting in the middle of a boring golf course, close to the National Road, and actually quite far from Lough Corrib.

Inside, everything looked dated and old fashioned in a depressing kind of way. Don't get me wrong though, if you like the heavy atmosphere of a dark lounge or the silence of a long carpetted corridor (the kind of corridors where you'd expect to see a ghost after midnight) then you will probably enjoy the place. Just not my style I suppose...

The room was uninteresting with (as you'd expect by now) old furnitures and older blankets on the bed, no shampoo in the bathroom...Oh and a great view...on the car-park.

On a positive note, the Pullman restaurant was nice - not so much because of the food, which was average, but because dining inside a converted Orient Express coach was good fun...however, don't expect to be able to take one last drink at the Hotel bar after 11pm - it will most likely be closed !

Finally, I have to warn breakfast lovers that Glenlo isn't the place for a nice omelette - mine was close to being totally unacceptable (overcooked and greasy)...

Please note that I only spent one night at Glenlo and therefore it is possible that I was just there on a bad day...But when you pay over 350 EUR for a room + 200 EUR on food, you expect a lot better than that.

I wont be coming back.

We have just returned from staying four nights at this wonderful hotel. The Hotel hosted my friends wedding. The staff went out of there way to help. Just phone zero and tea or coffee arrive for the cookies (24 hours a day). The food was a of a high standard and children were well looked after. Anything they wanted was cooked not a chicken nugget in sight. The views are amazing and the hotels library and lounges were restful and lovely furnishings. The Cellar bar as a great meeting places, meet lots of guests having a great time. You must try the scones for afternoon tea. The breakfast had so much choice. Stay here for a wonderful time, but not if you are into modern hotels, this has bags of old fashion charm.
