“Would stay again.”

Glenlo Abbey is a lovely hotel. The staff are really nice and helpful but not in your face. It's well priced in comparison to other hotels in Galway. I would definitely stay again and have already recommended it to many.

Stayed on the Friday night of The Galway Races this year. The hotel is an old abbey with golf course on site. The arrival experience is good and they abbey looks well as you drive up the avenue. From observation only, the course does not look to be in great condition.

The check-in experience was very good. There was one lady who really made an impact over the stay and that was Maura. I dont think I have ever met a more, cheerful and friendly person. Honestly, she was great fun to engage with. She introduced herself to both of us and always called us by name whenever she met us - very personable, Irish hospitality at it's best.

The hotel was doing a soft refurb over the dates - a small amount of workers laying carpets, painting etc. while we were there, but they didnt interupt our stay. We had drinks in the bar, again service was very friendly and country! Overall, staff were friendly.

Room was a decent size, but very classic and really needs refurbing. Nothing available in the mini-bar as it was plugged out and empty. Breakfast was in a lovely room and again the feel of a good hearty Irish breakast experience was evident. Food was very good and tasty.

The hotels trades as a 5* - however the service standards and the products itself is not 5* at all. It's very nice, but not at this level yet, it will take a while, with alot of investment and standards training.

Overall, a lovely country hotel in Galway. Not 5* at all - but bery welcoming and hospitable - again, Maura was great!

Had a really nice stay in Glenlo Abbey Hotel lastweek. The Hotel is undergoing refurbishment, so there were quite a few painters and general workmen around as you would expect. We were in room 108 on ground floor, which was well appointed with kingsize bed and decent bathroom, with a selection of quality toiletries. Check in at reception was a bit overpowering,as the receptionist tried too hard to welcome guests. I have never had my hand shaken [twice] by staff when registering, and there was a sales pitch to book for dinner before leaving desk. As it happened we only wanted a snack, and had a wonderful seafood chowder in the bar. Our breakfast was in the River Restaurant, and was top class. It's always nice to have stiff linen tablecloths, and we had our choice of cereals and fruit, and then a serviced hot full Irish and Eggs Benedict. One problem we did have was a very noisy diesel delivery lorry outside our window at 6 am, and another about 7 am. However, all in all we really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Try for a room well away from the hotel goods delivery area, as the early morning deliveries start a...

We were stayin in the area on holiday and spotted the sign to the hotel - we wanted somewhere special to stop and have a drink and this provided exactly that. Amazing scenery of the lough corrib from the balcony and the wine is delicious!

Location superb, golfers kept happy, stunning walk to the lake, fine spot for a drink at the train seats, however that's where it ends!
Dining room taken for a wedding, so the bar is the five star experience, find your own table, one the size of a medieval dining feast, tuna cremated to death, chef left it in the furnace, pavlova without fruit, new experience, coffee with gone over cream, sent back, replacement the same, staff trying the best they can, however no evidence of management.
Rooms need an upgrade too!!

We had a great time but the hotel really isn't 5*. Considering we paid 259 euro for a special occasion package as it was my boyfriend's 30th there were a few things that weren't great. The champagne wasn't in our room on arrival as stated, and the glasses were wine glasses not champagne and one of the handles on the bucket was missing (ordinarily not something that I would ever mention but at this price... and it's not hard to get that right). We were also supposed to be in a superior room but there were scuffs on the wall and we kept having problems getting the taps & shower to work in the bathroom. The bath took about 20 minutes to run too! For dinner we were also put in a small room next to the reception because there was a wedding on in the main river room, so there was only one other couple in there and not much atmosphere at all. The breakfast was brilliant! I had eggs benedict and my boyfriend had pancakes and the buffet was great, it was in the River Room which was lovely (where we had hoped dinner would be). The train is cool, an original from the Orient Express (although we couldn't go in, we just peeped in the windows!) The staff were all very nice and polite which is always lovely.

Dear Zoe2tails,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us however do apologise for the service shortfall on arrival. Please be assured that this instance is not indicative of our normal service which is often lauded. Breakfast is such a lovely way to start your day in The River Room looking out on Lough Corrib.

We do hope to welcome you back to Glenlo in the future.

Warmest regards

we are partial, so i share that up front. my wife has deep fantasies about galway which stem from her father’s singing “galway bay” at the top of the steps to his nine children on many sleepless nights back in the states. our first visit we stayed along the bay, but weren’t that impressed, so next visit we tried to find something a bit more romantic and elegant. we found both at glenlo abbey. we’ve now developed our own little rich history there, most notably staying for three days with all three of our adult children and their spouses for my wife’s 60th birthday. dinner with kevin in the pullman car was a special memory for whole clan as it has been for us on other visits, which is why it was such a crushing blow to find it closed for renovation under the new management. we so wish that they’d decided to wait until after the season, but appreciate that anything they do to ensure the longterm viability of the car and the abbey is worth the wait. it just means we’ll have to go back sooner than otherwise planned!

as others have stated so well, the staff is just top drawer. we were there three nights this year and it took them all of about 15 minutes to have our names and requirements down pat. sandra and maura were great and i dare say maura saved the day with a secret fan she knew about when the unseasonably warm weather about sent my wife to the showers! i apologize for forgetting the bartender's name, tim perhaps, but he was perfect as well. he served a mean meal and was always ready with a bucket of ice for my scotch bottle!

our one regret was missing our two planned dinners in the pullman, which was a huge disappointment; but again the team came to our rescue. in addition to our arrival night, which we ate in the pub, they arranged a wonderful place along the coast a bit out of town for one evening, and an even better night following. the galway bay hotel dinner that went with “trad on the prom” wasn’t much, but the show was outstanding. we’ve seen river dance, lord of the dance, jury’s show years ago, and other similar shows, but this was better. it’s not so much that the show’s better, it’s clearly not on the same scale, it’s that everyone gets a great seat -- as long as you don’t count a lack of air as a hinderance.

but back to glenlo, we have no idea what it will be like in the future, maybe the rates will go through the roof. regardless, we’re committed. this is wonderful facility, with large rooms, i really don’t believe there’s a bad room in the place, and a truly marvelous staff. if you can, wait until kevin and the orient express are back in operation. you won’t regret it. he’s a charmer, the train’s a trip and the food is outstanding.

Room Tip: for a hotel, i know of no better value in all ireland than glenlo abbey and i believe all the rooms...
