“Five stars, for what! Chef off for the day!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

Location superb, golfers kept happy, stunning walk to the lake, fine spot for a drink at the train seats, however that's where it ends!
Dining room taken for a wedding, so the bar is the five star experience, find your own table, one the size of a medieval dining feast, tuna cremated to death, chef left it in the furnace, pavlova without fruit, new experience, coffee with gone over cream, sent back, replacement the same, staff trying the best they can, however no evidence of management.
Rooms need an upgrade too!!

We had a great time but the hotel really isn't 5*. Considering we paid 259 euro for a special occasion package as it was my boyfriend's 30th there were a few things that weren't great. The champagne wasn't in our room on arrival as stated, and the glasses were wine glasses not champagne and one of the handles on the bucket was missing (ordinarily not something that I would ever mention but at this price... and it's not hard to get that right). We were also supposed to be in a superior room but there were scuffs on the wall and we kept having problems getting the taps & shower to work in the bathroom. The bath took about 20 minutes to run too! For dinner we were also put in a small room next to the reception because there was a wedding on in the main river room, so there was only one other couple in there and not much atmosphere at all. The breakfast was brilliant! I had eggs benedict and my boyfriend had pancakes and the buffet was great, it was in the River Room which was lovely (where we had hoped dinner would be). The train is cool, an original from the Orient Express (although we couldn't go in, we just peeped in the windows!) The staff were all very nice and polite which is always lovely.

Dear Zoe2tails,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us however do apologise for the service shortfall on arrival. Please be assured that this instance is not indicative of our normal service which is often lauded. Breakfast is such a lovely way to start your day in The River Room looking out on Lough Corrib.

We do hope to welcome you back to Glenlo in the future.

Warmest regards

we are partial, so i share that up front. my wife has deep fantasies about galway which stem from her father’s singing “galway bay” at the top of the steps to his nine children on many sleepless nights back in the states. our first visit we stayed along the bay, but weren’t that impressed, so next visit we tried to find something a bit more romantic and elegant. we found both at glenlo abbey. we’ve now developed our own little rich history there, most notably staying for three days with all three of our adult children and their spouses for my wife’s 60th birthday. dinner with kevin in the pullman car was a special memory for whole clan as it has been for us on other visits, which is why it was such a crushing blow to find it closed for renovation under the new management. we so wish that they’d decided to wait until after the season, but appreciate that anything they do to ensure the longterm viability of the car and the abbey is worth the wait. it just means we’ll have to go back sooner than otherwise planned!

as others have stated so well, the staff is just top drawer. we were there three nights this year and it took them all of about 15 minutes to have our names and requirements down pat. sandra and maura were great and i dare say maura saved the day with a secret fan she knew about when the unseasonably warm weather about sent my wife to the showers! i apologize for forgetting the bartender's name, tim perhaps, but he was perfect as well. he served a mean meal and was always ready with a bucket of ice for my scotch bottle!

our one regret was missing our two planned dinners in the pullman, which was a huge disappointment; but again the team came to our rescue. in addition to our arrival night, which we ate in the pub, they arranged a wonderful place along the coast a bit out of town for one evening, and an even better night following. the galway bay hotel dinner that went with “trad on the prom” wasn’t much, but the show was outstanding. we’ve seen river dance, lord of the dance, jury’s show years ago, and other similar shows, but this was better. it’s not so much that the show’s better, it’s clearly not on the same scale, it’s that everyone gets a great seat -- as long as you don’t count a lack of air as a hinderance.

but back to glenlo, we have no idea what it will be like in the future, maybe the rates will go through the roof. regardless, we’re committed. this is wonderful facility, with large rooms, i really don’t believe there’s a bad room in the place, and a truly marvelous staff. if you can, wait until kevin and the orient express are back in operation. you won’t regret it. he’s a charmer, the train’s a trip and the food is outstanding.

Room Tip: for a hotel, i know of no better value in all ireland than glenlo abbey and i believe all the rooms...

Just back from this beautiful classy hotel.
There is such a good vibe throughout. Have stayed in numerous Galway hotels in the past few years and there is something special about the Glenlo.
Food in the Riverroom was amazing, we had the steak, the tartlet I chose for dessert was served with thinly sliced apple and raspberry sorbet. There was a lovely natural manner to the service that you don't get everywhere. The breakfast was equally good.
My room-302- had lovely views looking down onto the golf course and river. It was really comfortable too. We relaxed in the lounge beside reception after dinner.
Fabulous, unselfconscious place.

Room Tip: 3rd floor is lovely.

Dear luasgirl,

Thank you for your lovely review! It is very nice to read of your experience in The River Room. It is such a lovely setting commanding superb views over Lough Corrib. This combined with our kitchen team's enthusiasm for the food they produce leads to a most satisfying evening.

We hope to see you back in Glenlo in the not too distant future.

Maura met us at the front desk with a warmest smile and with genuine hospitality. Within an hour she knew us all by name..an amazing young lady! The hotel has been recently purchased and is undergoing renovations--but the staff and property was amazingly comfortable. Fresh coffee was delivered with a smile each morning in a silver pot and was very appreciated. We had reserved golf and the course too, was under renovation, but the golf manager was very accommodating (even delivering one of his personal hats to one of my friends, as she promised her husband a Glenlo Abbey golf hat). The dining and bar were great too.

Had to visit hospital in galway and got a good deal in Glenlo. It is under renovation at the moment which should make it a lovely place to stay. We found the staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful and the food was great. We had bar food both nights and everything was cooked very well. The breakfast is the nicest we have ever eaten! We were in room 101 which was spacious and nice and a lovely view overlooking the abbey.

We purchased a stay and drive package from Aer Lingus for our trip to Ireland this year. This hotel was where we stayed near Galway. The hotel was easy to find and the grounds and building were charming! Our room was spacious and comfortable and overlooked the grounds and water. The lounge, sitting room and bar were lovely! Staff were so very helpful to us and recommended dining, taxi and other options for us to see in Galway. Breakfast was included in the room rate and was very delicious (full Irish every morning!). Overall, a lovely old Irish hotel and we would stay there again for sure!
