I found this hotel a little disappointing. I have passed it many times on my way to Clifden and thought it looked great...from a distance.
While it was not a dreadful experience, it was pretty bad and doesn't come close to matching up to its five star rating. In fact, I wonder when was the last time that Bord Failte assessed this place; compared to other five star establishments (and, being honest, four star ones too) this hotel simply cannot hold a candle to them.
In particular our bathroom was tiny, shabby and poorly finished. All around the door there were lumps of decorator's caulk. Both myself and my girlfriend cut our hands when trying to open the bathroom door as the chrome plating on the handle was cracking and falling off leaving razor sharp pieces of metal. The shower took 5 minutes to heat up and the pull-out clothes hanger was long gone. None of this is what you would expect from a five star hotel.
The rooms were clean but very average, I have stayed in three star hotels that would easily live up to the Glenlo standard.
My main criticism of this hotel is its misplaced rating (which is the fault of the assessor rather than the hotel). This would make a perfectly adequate three star hotel but no more in my opinion.
On a positive note, I can't fault the staff, who were friendly and professional.
