I found this hotel a little disappointing. I have passed it many times on my way to Clifden and thought it looked great...from a distance.

While it was not a dreadful experience, it was pretty bad and doesn't come close to matching up to its five star rating. In fact, I wonder when was the last time that Bord Failte assessed this place; compared to other five star establishments (and, being honest, four star ones too) this hotel simply cannot hold a candle to them.

In particular our bathroom was tiny, shabby and poorly finished. All around the door there were lumps of decorator's caulk. Both myself and my girlfriend cut our hands when trying to open the bathroom door as the chrome plating on the handle was cracking and falling off leaving razor sharp pieces of metal. The shower took 5 minutes to heat up and the pull-out clothes hanger was long gone. None of this is what you would expect from a five star hotel.

The rooms were clean but very average, I have stayed in three star hotels that would easily live up to the Glenlo standard.

My main criticism of this hotel is its misplaced rating (which is the fault of the assessor rather than the hotel). This would make a perfectly adequate three star hotel but no more in my opinion.

On a positive note, I can't fault the staff, who were friendly and professional.

  • Liked — That would take me too long to think about
  • Disliked — Average quality when we were going for a luxury experience

I have no idea how anyone can rate this as a 5 star hotel, I would say 3 at most. The rooms are shabby and dated, the bar has absolutely no atmosphere and the food in the Pullman restaurant was below average and over priced. I noticed that a number of comments in the book at reception were erased. I decided to write a review stating that in my opinion this is not a 5 star hotel and couldnt believe it when I saw this had also been erased. I would definitely not stay here again.

Stayed in Galway in January , what a beautiful city . Its filled with interseting thing to do for people of all ages .

I was lucky enough to get a room at the Glenlo Hotel which was rather expensive but you really do get what you pay for .

The hotel itself has a fantastic old world feel to it and the staff can not do enough for you . We had dinner in the pullman restaurant on the second night of our stay and it was sensational , its an original tram from the orient express and the service and food are second to none .

The golf course is pretty basic but was perfect as i was meeting friends who dont play a huge amount of golf so the course was ideal for them .

All in all i had a great time and i will definetly return

I haven't stayed at other hotels in Galway, so I can't compare/contrast, but I have to believe this isn't the best one out there. Definately not 5-star; but very nice.

Good points:
Decent size room
OK service
Casual restaurant was good

Bad points:
Outside of town a bit
Nothing very luxurious about it
Not much to see/do on the grounds other than golf
The only "abbey" looking thing about it is modern and is just for wedding receptions, etc.
Way too expensive for what you get

Outstanding hotel, definitely one of the best in Ireland. Large room with King Bed and pleasant furnishings. The Pullman resturant was a very nice surprise, excellent meal and where else can you eat a meal in an Orient Express railway car. The regular hotel resturant was an excellent choice for breakfast, included in our B&B package.
