Ah, the Black Swan. This place really is one of our favourite places to eat. We've been several times, even though it's nearly an hour's drive.
It is, I believe, a 14th or 15th century building, full of atmosphere and history - a wonderful place just to have a drink if you're lucky enough to be local. To do just that though, or to drop in for lunch, would be missing out on what this hidden gem of an establishment does best - namely: dinner!
Since taking over The Black Horse a few years ago, the husband and wife team (he, formerly a chef for a top London hotel) have worked wonders here. I've never had a bad meal here. In fact I like it so much I chose it has the venue to propose to my then fiancee, now wife!
Some people are put off gastro-oriented pub/restaurants because the portions can be small and fussy. Not here. Yes the food is well presented, but they certainly don't skimp on the ingredients - you'll be very full by the end of it. If at all possible though, leave room for dessert. Being a massive dessert fan, I am almost duty bound to do this, and the imaginative conjurings of the Black Horse kitchen are not to be missed. Indeed, writing this review is making me feel hungry...
