Description: Appleby Magna in Leicestershire, as well as being listed in the Domesday book, is home to a lovingly restored 16th century grade II listed building The Black Horse Restaurant and Bar. Its a beloved village pub and The Black Horse also offers a stellar dining experience, with loyal customers coming back again and again for mouth-watering classic European cuisine. The lovingly restored Tudor exterior belies a contemporary and cosy interior perfect for a relaxing meal on a cold day. If youre lucky enough to visit on a warm day, theres also the option to go al fresco. Using much locally sourced and organic produce, the menus change with the seasons, though customers really rate the chicken liver parfait with white truffle oil and ciabatta, and the pub classic 21 day matured sirloin steak with triple-cooked chips. Desserts, too, are worth saving room for, as are the fantastic real ales.

“One of our perennial favourites!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2011

Ah, the Black Swan. This place really is one of our favourite places to eat. We've been several times, even though it's nearly an hour's drive.

It is, I believe, a 14th or 15th century building, full of atmosphere and history - a wonderful place just to have a drink if you're lucky enough to be local. To do just that though, or to drop in for lunch, would be missing out on what this hidden gem of an establishment does best - namely: dinner!

Since taking over The Black Horse a few years ago, the husband and wife team (he, formerly a chef for a top London hotel) have worked wonders here. I've never had a bad meal here. In fact I like it so much I chose it has the venue to propose to my then fiancee, now wife!

Some people are put off gastro-oriented pub/restaurants because the portions can be small and fussy. Not here. Yes the food is well presented, but they certainly don't skimp on the ingredients - you'll be very full by the end of it. If at all possible though, leave room for dessert. Being a massive dessert fan, I am almost duty bound to do this, and the imaginative conjurings of the Black Horse kitchen are not to be missed. Indeed, writing this review is making me feel hungry...

“Good option for pub and food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2010

We ate here on the way to Champneys Springs Spa. A cute little old pub in a small village. It was a very cold day and the pub hadn't iit its fire which was disappointing so we kept out coats on through lunch. Service was able although not particularly friendly but the local bitters were good and the food was good for a small pub [not microwaved and a fair choice - our burgers were well made and seasoned but overcooked]. Worth stopping by if you want a rest/drink/food in the area.

“Great little restaurant and bar just off the M42”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2008

This restaurant and bar is friendly and not stuffy with great food, makes a great alternative to stopping off at a motorway eatery being just a few hundred yards from J11 on the M42. The presentation and flavour of some of the dishes is equal to some of the well known restaurants with famous chefs without the accomanying price tags.
