“Country Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Just come back from an excellent weekend away at The Holcombe Inn. The food was excellent, extremely good value, and the wine list was of an equally high standard. The room we stayed in was pleasant with great views of the surrounding countryside and nice to have proper coffee in the room and decent teas. The staff were extremely accommodating in both the hotel and the bar/restaurant area and clearly all very passionate about their place. A definite recommendation for anyone going to the area, either to stay or just for a meal.

We stayed here in the Rococo Room, a one-night stop with two small children (3 and 5) to break the long drive back from Cornwall to Cambridge. They were extremely helpful, putting two camp beds up in the room to accommodate the children. It was a squeeze with the beds there, but if you have children that are too young to be in separate rooms all night, it's still extremely comfortable and well appointed (it's one of several new rooms they have and isn't yet pictured on the website, although there are photos on their Facebook page). We didn't get to try the bath, but the rain shower was fabulous.

The only slight quibble is that the camp beds squeak badly - our five year old is a restless sleeper and we heard every twitch!

The food, both dinner and breakfast, was fabulous (the children helping by settling down in the room, thank goodness). I had the best lamb I've ever had, anywhere. My starter of breaded pork belly was delicious. My wife had a pear and blue cheese salad and a steak and ale pie, both of which were excellent. The wine list isn't the biggest in the world, but there's still a good selection.

The choice is better than usual at breakfast. Big fry-up predictably lovely; I had the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, which were perfect and the kids were in heaven with maple syrup pancakes.

The staff were great with the children but this is undoubtedly a place to come as a couple.

All in all a fantastic find.

Thank you for your lovely comments and letting us know that you enjoyed your stay at The Holcombe Inn. I also thank you for your comment about the child beds being a bit squeaky! They have now been replaced with a brand new upgraded more substantial version version to be delivered to us within a week so no more squeaks!

We went for a romantic meal, and we had a great 3 course meal that was very impressive, the sharing desserts we ordered were totally divine (my favourite was the banoffee part!) The Service of the waiting staff was second to none and very efficent, it was lovely to have that personal valentine touch to the tables with a red rose and petals to make the evening romantic. The only one thing that i would have to say as a downside was hearing the chef's abusive language towards the other members of staff, we thought that it was very unprofessional and to see one of the lovely girls upset was a sad ending to a very lovely evening. My advice would be to sit as far away from the kitchen door as possible. It was a shame.

We very much enjoyed our recent stay to the Holcombe Inn. All the staff were exceptionally professional and kind, the food was great, it was beautifully decorated and the rooms were lovely. We loved it and will go back again. Thank you!

Room Tip: I love an attic room so I particularly liked 'hunters'.

Excellent service, very polite and cute little dog at reception.

Room was small and clean and well heated (temperatures outside were freezing).

We had a cozy home like breakfast, which was included in the rate.

Overall, a positive experience

We stayed with our daughter for 3 nights between Xmas and New Year. Our room - Old England - was lovely, with a really comfy bed, modern bathroom with rain shower and fluffy towels. The "proper" coffee was much appreciated and beats getting left a couple of sachets handsdown. The view accross the Mendips was wonderful. There was an iron and ironing board available which was useful.

Breakfast was great - so lovely to have a choice. Full english, pancakes, oatcakes and poached eggs etc. We ate in the restaurant each night and were really impressed by the food - great choice again, and reasonably priced. The kids menu was good too. Jules and her staff were really welcoming, and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

It is about 10 minutes drive to the nearest Bath park and ride, so we enjoyed a day out there. We planned a trip to Wookey Hole, but due to torrential rain and flooded roads, we had to abandon the journey and retreat to the snug by the bar, with it's comfy sofas and open fire. We spent a very pleasant afternoon there instead - and the free wifi came in handy. Bit of a dream come true to be stranded in a lovely country pub for the day. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Old England has a wonderful view and room for a put-me-up bed for a child.

3 of us stayed for one night just before Christmas as we could not find a decent hotel in Bath for the Christmas market.
Well, thank goodness we decided to stay at the Holcombe Inn. The rooms were excellent, very comfortable, decorated and fitted to a very good standard. We ate in the restaurant in the evening. The food was excellent, service fantastic and atmosphere just brilliant.
The views on waking (we were in the Africa room facing the old church) were great especially when the winter sun rose to hit the church in Holcombe village.
Getting into Bath was very easy. We drove to the park and ride, approximately 20 minutes and caught a bus for just over £2 return. When we got to Bath (about 15 mins) there were signs saying that all car parks were full. We breezed past all the traffic in the bus lane - great!
