“Lovely hotel, nice staff and good breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

My husband and I stayed there on Saturday night because our friends were renewing their vows in Shrewsbury. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed a great breakfast.

We have just spent two nights in Montgomery. A lovely Georgian town, and the Dragon is at the top of the Main Street . It is an old coaching inn, but was altered about 1900 to make it appear half timbered Tudor style. There is good parking at the front and back of the hotel. Staff were pleasant and obliging. Our room was one that has not been modernised yet. It was rather small for two people, but would have been fine for one person on their own. Unfortunately the window was too high for us to be able to see out of it. However, it did open, which was a plus. The bathroom was not good, poor, stained carpet, and the shower compartment was tired and mould had developed. However, the shower worked and the water was nice and hot. We did not pay a lot for the room, which included an excellent, and tasty breakfast. Lovely bacon and black pudding, and nice tomatoes. There were a few examples of what I would call sloppy housekeeping in our room, used towels not folded, for example, but hopefully once all the rooms have been up graded, it will be much nicer. We had one dinner in the hotel, a mixed experience, but the olive bread was excellent!

Room Tip: If an upgrade is available, take it, as the standard room we had was on the small and basic side.

Stayed here for one night whilst on business nearby.

The hotel is located in a lovely quiet part of Montgomery, which is a very picturesque place. There was plenty of free parking available in the area in front of the hotel

Check in was quick and easy. My room was in keeping with the coaching inn style of the hotel. Traditional appearance, but with most of the necessary amenities. It was very comfortable and clean. The negative points for my room were the frosted glass windows (couldn't see outside at all), and the lack of a proper shower (having a bath and hand-held shower head).

Dinner was superb. The quality and quantity of food was excellent and reasonably priced. Service was first class.

The bar had a good selection, including some real ales. Both staff and locals were very friendly and welcoming, making it a refreshing change from typical corporate hotels.

Breakfast was good, including a vegetarian breakfast option, however the service was somewhat lacking compared to the previous evening. A few people were waiting to be seated, and the waiter was peeping through the kitchen door window, but not coming out to seat them.

Checkout was quick and efficient, however it's worth being aware that some of the booking websites do not seems to be accurately reporting bookings to the hotel. This resulted in a double charge for breakfast, which was quickly resolved without any fuss. It's therefore worth having a printout of your booking details with you just in case.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay, and would be happy to recommend both the hotel and the location.

The Welsh border country is stunning, and Offa's Dyke a walkers paradise. Dotted along the dyke are beautiful rural towns and villages, with ruined castles, medieval churches and wonderful places to stay. Montgomery is one such location, and the Dragon Hotel is the old coaching inn in the heart of the town. A great place to stop for a day or so (or more!), the staff were very friendly, and the rooms large and comfortable. The bar is cosy (with good, real ales served) and the restaurant food hit the spot for hungry walkers. Despite the early 20th century mock Tudor facade (not unattractive in itself) the creaking passageways inside the hotel are more reminiscent of an earlier age when coach and horses rather than cars parked outside. The ruined castle with spectacular views is ten minutes walk up the road, and the Dyke path 15 minutes in the opposite direction. The church with its beautiful 15th and 16th century tombs is just a few minutes away.

Stayed here for one night whilst walking Offa's Dyke. The warm welcome and service was very good. Dinner was delicious and breakfast was good as well. We are both vegetarians and had a good choice. The bedroom was comfortable, "did what it said on the tin", due updating (especially the bathroom) but perfectly acceptable. It was on the top floor with a beautiful view over the rooftops to the mountains beyond. The hotel/pub is characterful. Away from the main public areas, it was a all bit shabby and old fashioned - I was told that the property is being slowly refurbed which it clearly needs, just hope that the charm of the place survives. Staff told that the hotel is now owned by a consortium of 6 local people - well, they're getting it right so far.

A very welcoming 17th Century Coaching Inn. Everyone was welcoming and friendly.

Our room was on the top floor overlooking the Market Square and Town Hall, with a fine view across the rooftops to the distant hills. The room was very clean and recently refurbished with new carpeting and curtains. The King Size bed was very comfortable. There is car parking in front, but the hidden carpark at the rear was empty, despite the hotel being full for a wedding party.

Full breakfast was excellent, with fruit salad and yogurt also available. Service was fast, despite the Hotel being full.

We stayed here as we were visiting The Checkers Restaurant for dinner. Cyclists and walkers are welcome. There is a swimming pool alongside the car park.
