“Great Stay at The Dragon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

Thank you so much to all the staff that made our (sadly) one night stay so lovely! Great (quirky) room - that we would book again and wonderful food. What more can you ask for? Everything was just as it should be and it was such a shame that we could not stop longer. next time we certainly will! Thanks Dragon

Room Tip: Ring reception and talk through the choices of room - there are some lovely quirky rooms but what su...

We arrived early last Friday evening for our first visit this year. We received awarm welcome from all the staff, who were genuinely pleased to see us. Our room was one of the newly refurbished ones on the first floor with a very nice bathroom, and was lovely. We had Dinner in the hotel Restaurant which was excellent as was Bre\kfast the following morning.
We ate in the Restaurant again the following evening. Before departing on Sunday, we ate a hearty breakfast.
The Owners and Staff at this Hotel are Professional and delightul. Thankyou all for a lovely stay. We sill be back soon.

This is a beautiful building and we often pop in for a drink. Last night, New Eve's Eve, we went with friends for dinner. The staff were all very friendly and the chap who took our order in the restaurant was very nice . We all had the leek Welsh Cakes to start with and all agreed they needed seasoning. Three out of four main course were very good but my duck was not great. So stick to beef or sea bass and you will be ok. Deserts were very good. Champagne was lovely but when you pay £50 for a bottle you expect some way of keeping it chilled and no one poured it for us. When we were given the bill we had been charged for drinks we had not had amounting to about £25. Apparently someone else's bar bill had been added to our restaurant bill by mistake so I assume some else got away without paying. So always check your bill. We intend to go back and give it one more chance before completely dismissing it in the future as it may have just been a one off.

Room Tip: Did not stay in the hotel

This is an old inn with quirky rooms - clean but in need of a little TLC. The hotel is very quietly situated just by the town square. Because the hotel is old the floors are a bit creaky when people start moving in the morning but otherwise it is very quiet (the local church clock starts chiming at 0700 but it is not too intrusive.)
The bed was really comfortable,
Friendly staff in reception, bar, restaurant and at breakfast. Although we had a bit of a mishap with one of our meals (properly corrected by the staff) the food is good.
Excellent breakfast - good selection and the ladies give it a really homely feeling.
Good value for money.

Room Tip: Just ask for a quiet room - they will do their best for you.

We needed a place to stay after an event and this was the nearest hotel.
We were tempted by an exceptional value deal.
The hotel is very old and has an interesting character. We had a small room on the top floor. It was a bit of a throwback to the 1980s, but it was clean, warm, and didn't cost very much - so we can't complain.
The few staff members we met were all very nice indeed. The barman and man of many roles, James, was most pleasant, as was the lady on reception.
The food was fine and we enjoyed a dink in the bar. And the wifi was strong and free.
Apparently, the hotel was facing closure a few years ago - but a group of local people chipped in to keep it going. Good on them. There isn't much in this little town.
Summary: far from de luxe, but a friendly, pleasant place that was great value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms on top floor are small, but en-suite. Done if the others aren't

Our first visit to Montgomery broke the journey to Manchester. The hotel is placed in a quiet part of the town and was quite busy with local groups meeting there. The rooms are in the process of being up-dated and our room hadn't been done. It was adequate for the price and was overlooking the front. Unfortunately, the central heating didn't work and it was November, so we were re-housed in an up-dated room which was superior and at the rear of the hotel. Dinner was very good that evening but the breakfast was excellent, freshly cooked to order and was one of the best we have had. We wouldn't hesitate to go back.

This old inn, much added to, is the best item for miles around! Arriving late from nearby Welshpool, the Dragon held two rooms, retained the chef and treated us with graciousness ! They even apologized that it might be a bit noisy due to a party downstairs, but this was over by 10. Excellent breakfast and dinner ( if seated before 6,20 per cent discount) and food was great - especially their Montgomery "real" bread! There is even an enclosed/separate pool, but we did not partake although several others were enjoying a swim. Sari and Sarah were most helpful even contacting a airport taxi for two weeks away. Great castle climb is just behind and up from the village square. Liked it so much we stayed for two nights!

Room Tip: A rabbit warren of stairs - even after two days I had to concentrate as to which turn was correct in...
