“Nice hotel - good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This is an old inn with quirky rooms - clean but in need of a little TLC. The hotel is very quietly situated just by the town square. Because the hotel is old the floors are a bit creaky when people start moving in the morning but otherwise it is very quiet (the local church clock starts chiming at 0700 but it is not too intrusive.)
The bed was really comfortable,
Friendly staff in reception, bar, restaurant and at breakfast. Although we had a bit of a mishap with one of our meals (properly corrected by the staff) the food is good.
Excellent breakfast - good selection and the ladies give it a really homely feeling.
Good value for money.

Room Tip: Just ask for a quiet room - they will do their best for you.

We needed a place to stay after an event and this was the nearest hotel.
We were tempted by an exceptional value deal.
The hotel is very old and has an interesting character. We had a small room on the top floor. It was a bit of a throwback to the 1980s, but it was clean, warm, and didn't cost very much - so we can't complain.
The few staff members we met were all very nice indeed. The barman and man of many roles, James, was most pleasant, as was the lady on reception.
The food was fine and we enjoyed a dink in the bar. And the wifi was strong and free.
Apparently, the hotel was facing closure a few years ago - but a group of local people chipped in to keep it going. Good on them. There isn't much in this little town.
Summary: far from de luxe, but a friendly, pleasant place that was great value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms on top floor are small, but en-suite. Done if the others aren't

Our first visit to Montgomery broke the journey to Manchester. The hotel is placed in a quiet part of the town and was quite busy with local groups meeting there. The rooms are in the process of being up-dated and our room hadn't been done. It was adequate for the price and was overlooking the front. Unfortunately, the central heating didn't work and it was November, so we were re-housed in an up-dated room which was superior and at the rear of the hotel. Dinner was very good that evening but the breakfast was excellent, freshly cooked to order and was one of the best we have had. We wouldn't hesitate to go back.

This old inn, much added to, is the best item for miles around! Arriving late from nearby Welshpool, the Dragon held two rooms, retained the chef and treated us with graciousness ! They even apologized that it might be a bit noisy due to a party downstairs, but this was over by 10. Excellent breakfast and dinner ( if seated before 6,20 per cent discount) and food was great - especially their Montgomery "real" bread! There is even an enclosed/separate pool, but we did not partake although several others were enjoying a swim. Sari and Sarah were most helpful even contacting a airport taxi for two weeks away. Great castle climb is just behind and up from the village square. Liked it so much we stayed for two nights!

Room Tip: A rabbit warren of stairs - even after two days I had to concentrate as to which turn was correct in...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2014

My husband was working in the area and had booked a room for himself for one night when we realised I could go along too as I had time off work. The staff were very accommodating and efficient. They had no trouble in agreeing for us to have breakfast separately, (husband early, me late), and also booked the swimming pool for me to enjoy a swim in the lovely warm pool the following day, which I had all to myself. The room had a good selection of drinks and was very comfortable, could just do with a bit of updating, and the bathroom was a bit cramped to have a proper shower in (sloping ceiling). The food was lovely both in the evening and at breakfast, with all the staff being very friendly.

The town itself was a bit too quiet, with the museum closed, and the bank only opens on Thursdays for 4 hours! It is a steep walk up to the castle, but lovely views from there. I had a lovely pot of tea and big slice of cake in the very welcoming tearoom and the end of the road from te hotel.

Had a lovely break, and very good value.

This is a friendly hotel in a small, quiet town. The room was comfortable with plenty of wardrobe space, and a good supply of refreshments in the room (tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and bottled water). The room was clean and tidy. If you are staying, book a table for the evening as there are no other restaurants within walking distance that are open int he evening. Although the menu lacked imagination (great if you like chicken), the food was very well prepared and tasty. If you have a small appetite don't order a starter and main course as the meals are on the large side. We didn't get to try the deserts! They have a limited wine menu by-the-glass, but the by-the-bottle is good. They also have a good selection of real ale. Although there is free WiFi, it is a bit flakey.
