“friendly place to stay in beautiful area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

We have often visited montgomery but never stayed before. We really enjoyed our stay at the dragon hotel - 1 night at the end of sept (room 11). We had a premium room as needed room for child. Room was fine - clean and comfortable with traditional furniture. We didn't have any problems with noise although I think there was a function on in one of the rooms but it didn't affect us. Only problem was the temperature of the room was a bit too warm during the night - better than being too cold though! Ensuite bathroom was also good and nice big fluffy towels. We enjoyed a bar snack in the evening and good breakfast in the morning. We also enjoyed swimming in the pool which although it was in a separate building was very close by. Pool and surroundings was lovely and warm and our 10 year old son loved it - we had it to our self saturday afternoon - only problem is beware of the slippery steps - would recommend its safer not to use them and just slide in from the edge of the pool.
Overall this is a friendly and quirky place to stay in a beautiful area with a swimming pool too!

A lovely location in Montgomery, a beautiful town in Wales on the border with Shropshire. Lots of character - narrow staircases and low ceilings etc - but our room (6) had very nice views of the town centre and market square. Not recommended for very tall people, particularly as the toilet is below a slope - and the bath (with shower over) is not able to be used easily if you are tall! But - good tea and coffee facilities; comfortable bed; very friendly staff; tasty breakfast. We had Sunday lunch, too, which was delicious and very good value. Recommended.

Room Tip: Not sure of other rooms but 6 has some sloping ceilings, although not a massive issue.

My wife and needed a break, and having done my research I took a liking to the Dragon Hotel. Initial reaction was positive; nice old-fashioned appearance, booking-in no problem - then we saw our (cubby hole) room! Third floor, slanted on both sides, beams everywhere, creating our own obstacle course! The bath would have been great - for our 19-month old grandson! At 9.30 pm a jazz band started up, directly below our room, without any pre-notification. I complained to the manager, but it continued till later. Even when the band stopped, they then had to load their instruments, etc., back into their van, below our window. Due to being on the top floor the room was overly warm and not comfortable. At 8 am someone decided to empty the bottle bins into the skip below our room! The final disappointment was the breakfast. Cold coffee in the self-pour urns, no juices or cereal available, main breakfast drab. On settling our bill I was surprised not to be asked how our stay had been, presumably meaning that the Night Manager had failed to pass on my grievance from the previous evening.
Not happy!

Room Tip: Do not allow yourself to be allocated Room #18.

Stayed here for one night. Not only is Montgomery a wonderful little place, full of fascinating buildings and information, but this is a very friendly and comfortable hotel. Check in was efficient and friendly and first impressions of the room were good, although it was a little high up in the old building for me and my breathing problems. The room (6) was comfortable and well equipped but had the drawback of being right at the top of the building and thus had sloping ceilings which even my wife who is quite small found difficult to manage. I am much taller, so I struggled even more. As we didn't spend too much time in the room, it didn't matter too much. The food was really good as.was the service. The waiter at breakfast even went to the local shop to see if he could obtain gluten free bread for my wife's breakfast. sadly the shop didn't have any. We were told on departure by reception that had we requested a different room on booking, this could have been provided. We would certainly stay there again if in the area provided I remember to request a different room.

Room Tip: Avoid room 6 if over 5ft 10.

An unexpected pleasure. Montgomery itself is a delightful little place and the hotel is just on the edge of the village square. The staff are very friendly, the bedroom was good and the food in the bar of a decent standard. Would definitely stay here again if in the area.

Stayed here for one night before my wedding at Mellington hall.

Pros
Friendly and helpful staff
Big room(11) flat screen TV.
Nice food
Nice location with big car park at rear

Cons
My bed had a footboard and as I have long legs it was uncomfortable to sleep as against it.
Food took a while to arrive(restaurant not that busy)
Tried to charge me £69 even though it was £52 through booking.com( they did charge me correct price in the end)
Could do with a lick of paint in areas.

I would stay again.

Stayed at this hotel with two other couples for two nights at the end of August. The hotel is conveniently located in the middle of the town with parking to the front and rear. We decided to book a superior room at £89.00 per night and on arrival were allocated Room 16, which we were told they call the "honeymoon suite". The room is very large and has been recently refurbished, so decor and furniture is in prestine condition. The bathroom has a bath and a shower, albeit the latter is somewhat cramped for the larger person. The major downside is that it is located immediately above the bar, so if you are a light sleeper, you will not get to sleep until after midnight. The townhall clock also strikes the hour and the half hour until midnight, starting up again at 7.00am. We did not enjoy a peaceful and restful sleep.

We found the staff in the hotel and bar areas to be very friendly, efficient and polite. However, something must be done about the very poor service at breakfast time. We felt they were understaffed and poorly trained. As a consquence, service at breakfast was very very slow on the Saturday morning. We also thought that the selection of cold and hot breakfast offerings could be improved. They offer porridge as a hot option, but no honey, cinnamon etc. just white sugar.

We did use the indoor pool, which was hot, but could have been cleaner. We found a lot of hairs floating on the surface of the water. The changing facilities are small, cramped and the floors are wet.

Despite the above our party enjoyed its stay at The Dragon Hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor away ftrom the bar and restaurant.
