I had the joys of spending two nights in this 'hotel' Thursday/ Friday night this week.
The location is good- right by Loch Leven, on a bus route (to Fort William, Glasgow, Skye, Oban, Kinlochleven, Loch Lomond...) which is served regularly and only 20 mins from Fort William.
The hotel is not good- where to start?
If you've ever read 'Notes from a Small Island' by the legend that is Bill Bryson, you'll remember the description of the guest house in Dover he stayed at in 1970 something. It is a bit like that, a cross between an old guest house and fawlty towers.
I arrived at 8.30pm to be greeted by an Eastern European lady to attempt to check me in. She was clueless- she lost paperwork, was confused about keys, didn't know what to do with my payment and had no idea of an appropriate manner in which to deal with customers. Anyway, she showed me to my room (31) and left me.to explore.
It was cold so I went to check the window which was stuck, unable to be closed. I went to find the lady and.she came to my room. She looked at the window, fiddled and said 'I closed it myself earlier'.i also pointed out the cracks in the shower glass (who even has a shower glass anyway?!), diabolical mastik repairs in the bath and nice white powder/stain left as a welcome gift on the floor, along with the radiator cap! Her response was 'well?', me: 'well what?', her- 'well sorry but this is the room we have', she added 'I can get man' (well congratulations) and pointed at the window.
She did get a man- another Eastern European who I assume was her boyfriend (he came in dressed in a hoodie and tracksuit) and said that this was the case with all the windows. Anyway he fixed it.
In addition, whilst the hotwl don't provide any toiletries, I was offered half used bottle of shower gel, left by the last guest. There were fairly impressive cracks in the walls plus dents and holes.
I tried to run a bath to find the water pressure abysmal and the taps very confusing. So it came.to finding some towels- there were 3, one on the bed, one on the toilet seat and one on the rail. 2 of the 3 had orange bits on them. I went to reception (no phone in room) and showed them to the manageress whose response was 'oh they're stained, not dirty'- quite frankly I couldn't care which they were, as hotels should provide neither dirty nor stained towels! She agreed to bring some more.
She did and these were 'ok' but she delivered themsaying 'these came in the laundry today, so if they're dirty there's nothing I cam do'.
When I went to have a drink (the hotel dont provide water but it can be purchased for 80p), the glass was dirty- I went back to reception and the manageress said 'no they're fingerprints' she walked off with it and came back after a few minutes saying 'here you go- I've washed it'.
On amother few points- the bath and mirror were chipped, the furniture was dusty, bathroom bin not emptied for 2nd night, there were no plugs for the kettle, so I had to sit on the floor to boil it, no plug for sink, sink had no hot water on Saturday morning, the curtain was fraid, one towel had been cut in half to make two..
The room was freezing at night- on the Friday I had to wear jeans and a fleece over my pajamas...
When I booked I was told a full breakfast was included, and the website says B&B rates include continental buffet and full Scottish breakfast. I was told a Scottish breakfast would cost an extra £5.75! Also, had to make the selection the night before. Breakfast was awful- sausage not cooked, poor quality bacon, beans and mushrooms and awful hash browns and soggy tatty scone.
Continental breakfast was dire too- the offering included just 2 cereals (cornflakes were cheap and disgusting), hot cross buns, jam donuts (!! Does anywhere on the continent- or here- have donuts for breakfast?) which were awful and had been refrigerated for quite a while.
So all in all, a terrible hotel. Credit where credits due, the manageress tried her best, offering to rustle me up some food and to give me a lift to the bus stop if I could wait till after breakfast, and finding out where I needed to wait.
Anyway, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone- it is vile and worth avoiding. There is so much choice in the area, give the Allt Nan Ros a miss.
