“Good food, great hospitality & stunning views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2010

Spent a weekend in one of the luxury rooms which was superb, all brand new with lots of nice touches - especially loved the shower!
Breakfast was lovely with good portions made from decent ingredients with good service.
Had some drinks in the bar at night which felt like sitting in a good friends home, very friendly and a nice atmosphere...
All in all I would strongly recommend this BnB its worth every penny based on the above and that;'s before I mention the location. Enjoy

This is a little gem of a Bed and Breakfast, one that bridges the gap in the market between regular B&Bs and hotels.

On first arriving, the scenery was beautiful and calming. Located a short distance away from the nerve center of Glenridding, The Ullswater View is in a quiet area, where at night, you can see millions of stars in the pitch-black night sky. It a charming, good-sized establishment with a particularly impressive foyer and plenty of free parking. The large, uncovered windows that stretch across the walls of the foyer afford a splendid view of the lush surroundings. The decor is tasteful and modern, with elegant details throughout (this theme is continued in the room, which is discussed below). A large, flat-screened television is present in the foyer, along with board games and pillows on the leather sofas, making it feel like a home away from home.

The room, a standard double bedroom, provided a glimpse of the Ullswater lake and cost us about £62 per night (including breakfast). Wireless broadband is free. Presumably, we had a reduced rate for the room, because of our last-minute booking during the low season. The double bedrrom is rather small, although this did not bother us in the least (apparently, the three standard double rooms will be converted into two larger, luxury double rooms in 2011). It is furnished with a large and extremely comfortable bed, plenty of storage space and a large, flat-screened television. Again, the decor is up-to-date, with indulgent touches, such as the Sheridan (the sheets were so soft, I just had to peek at the label) duvet set. The bathroom was clean and it is clear that everything, from 100% cotton bathrobes to the complimentary liquor truffles and informative guest book (comprehensive walking routes and local restaurant menus were provided), has been carefully considered.

Breakfast was sublime. For the first time, I had a cooked breakfast that was not greasy, with every single item fresh and cooked to perfection. The cooked breakfast was large, with many components and on top of this, toast, jam, fresh fruit, cereals, bio-yoghurts, fruit juices, speciality teas and aromatic ground coffee were provided as well.

Although evening meals are not provided at The Ullswater View, packed lunches can be arranged with advanced notice, at the price of £5.50 per head. As I found that prices of food in the local area are rather high (my husband and I paid £8 for two small scones and two cups of tea at a cafe) and eateries are scattered, this may be a good choice for some.

Speaking of food, The Ullswater View bakes their own fruit bread, which is exquisite. Although I am not a fussy eater, I do have high standards and I do not give glowing reviews lightly. I (as well as my husband) can quite safely say that this is the most delicious fruit loaf that I have ever tasted. This fresh and fragrant fruit bread is served over breakfast and is available for purchase at just £1.50 per loaf.

Finally, the service at The Ullswater View was impeccable. Julie, the owner of this establishment, is a relaxed, friendly character. She is extremely patient (I am not a morning person and tend to turn up for breakfast at 9:30 a.m., the time when breakfast service is supposed to end but if I was late, Julie never noticed it, remaining cheerful, always) and nothing is too much for her. For example, hashbrowns, black pudding and something else (the memory of this third item escapes me) were on rotation in the breakfast menu. I asked for black pudding with my cooked breakfast and found out that hashbrowns were the choice of the day. I changed my order but Julie quickly said that she would check to see if she could rustle up some black pudding anyway. Just for little, old me! The last time I checked, this sort of service was only provided at some top-notch hotels (with matching sky-high price tags). Also, worthy of mention is the daily turn-down service, which includes the provision of fresh towels and scrumptious alcoholic truffles.

In short, staying at The Ullswater View was bliss and Julie was the cherry on the cake. Without her advice on things to do and places at which to eat, we would have seen, as well as done a lot less. Although it was only a brief, three-night stay, our time at The Ullswater View has left us with pleasant memories and a strong desire to return.

My boyfriend and i stayed in ullswater view for one night last week. the place was easy to find and the lady who runs it was very friendly and offered us tea and coffee when we arrived. the room was smallish but we paid for the budget room so it wasnt bad for £70 a night. it had a big tv and a docking station for an ipod which was useful. walls are absolutely paper thin but everyone in the hotel was quiet so it didnt really bother us. breakfast was lovely, and there was plenty of it. you could help yourself to toast, cereal and drinks, on top of being offered one of several options for a cooked breakfast. overall i nice place in a nice location and value for money.

We stayed at the ullswater view in june this year and we had such a nice time. The weather was gorgeous!! we stayed in room 8 which is the most expensive but well worth the money. The room was modern, clean and fresh. We were bigs fan of the shower in the room and also the other bedroom off of ours with bunk beds and a seperate TV, an ideal room for children.
The staff were lovely, julie is a good laugh and the fairy godmother chef cannot do enough for you at breakfast :-)
The small village of glenridding is very quaint and the people are very welcoming. The food at the ramblers in is good. The ayra force waterfall is a must and the steamers also. Just after the steamers pick up point is a small cafe where your can hire your own small motor boat for a reasonable price and go out onto the lake. We did this twice... Will definately be going back next year!! Jabz and Lotus

We booked the accommodation months ago for a night to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary; we had passed it and seen its fantastic setting - just where we wanted. I mentioned on the booking form that we were looking for somewhere to have a special dinner but we received no acknowledgement or response. The form I signed clearly had our request on it. On arrival, Julie the proprietor was excitedly preparing for a night out and beer bottles and fag ends were left all night on the table outside where she and her friends drank before leaving. We'd booked the luxury suite which had been modernised with a super bathroom and fantastic shower - sadly no lake view. Poor sound-proofing - we could clearly hear the conversation in the next room, but it had a very comfortable bed and we slept well. Breakfast was good even if service was slow - the cook was also checking people out - no sign of Julie.

Overall, the guest house has great potential and money has clearly been spent on modernising it to a high standard [but sack the painter who left paint tin rings on the carpet and splashes on the skirting boards!]. Maybe we were unlucky in our timing but we would have hoped more personal attention should have been spent on individual guests' requests.

We enjoyed our stay in the Ullswater View and were made to feel very welcome. The bedroom was very small but very clean and comfortable with a wonderful view. Breakfast was delicious. The only downside was that the walls are very thin and you could hear talking in the next rooms.

We have just returned from a weekend at the Ullswater view and had a wonderful time. Julie is wonderful - so friendly and helpful and seemed to appear from nowhere whenever you needed anything. The rooms and bed were very comfortable with lovely views. It was very enjoyable relaxing in the conservatory with a glass of wine on arrival and the hotel (which is how it feels) is handy for all the beauty spots and some lovely pubs. We would highly recommend it to anybody and I hope will return some time in the future.
Thanks Julie.
