Headlam Hall certainly warrants a top third position in any league of “country house hotels” and the good thing is it’s obviously on the “up” rather than declining!!
The rural setting is great and the gardens are extremely well maintained and a delight to walk around.
The staff ....I think .....are all locals and they are extremely “down to earth”, friendly, helpful and polite –there is certainly no sense of any being aloof (as sadly does occur all too often in similar establishments!)
The hotel seems to be the local specialist in wedding receptions and family parties and, like other contributors have suggested , we did (occasionally) feel we were gate crashing…especially at breakfast.
The suite we had was adequately maintained and VERY clean, other than the windows desperately needed an external wash and an inside fill and paint treatment.
Sadly the bathroom was the only major letdown for us…..it was certainly very clean but it was sadly far too small for today’s demanding travellers who pay £135 a night …it was also too dated and had little synergy with the hotel or indeed the suite….. it would certainly benefit from a designer who could optimise and utilise the limited space available and who would transform the eclectic tiling patterns currently in use….also the fittings were beginning to fail…loose tap….a toilet seat kept demanding to go to the horizontal position at the most inappropriate times..and the silicone sealant around the bath had been replaced on many occasions and was very wide and deep and poorly applied….nothing terminal, just frustrating!
Dinner in the restaurant was from high quality locally sourced produce and was value for money, it was well cooked without being exceptional…the chef likes to mix and match, the fillet steak with snails was a first…..it was very pleasant but like the rest of dinner not highly flavoured or seasoned..
Wine was good value and there is an adequate list.
The “cooked” breakfast was simple and very good.
The new spa is a real winner…it’s well managed and it’s new its very clean and pleasant…the outdoor hot tub is a nice touch.
We didn’t golf but the adjacent course was well attended and maintained.
All in all a very safe and friendly place, well patronised and well managed and one which the management and owners are rightly proud of…. and I have no hesitation in recommending it ……and if they do decide to continue to invest, and I’m sure they will given their record to date…… I would strongly suggest that the bathrooms are given priority…with a few tweaks a rise from 3 star establishment to 4 stars should then be a formality.
Go there and enjoy!
