“Beautiful, relaxing place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

Stayed here for a Spring Break with my wife for two nights. Wonderful room in the old part of the house. The food was excellent and the service friendly. The spa was very good indeed and our treatments very relaxing. We played the golf course, which was excellent and challenging.
The gardens are fabulous - don't miss them.

Room Tip: The old house has beautiful traditional rooms.

I am delighted that you enjoyed your spring break. It is also nice to read that you liked the ambience of the main hall rooms and that you mentioned our gardens. They are a fantastic part of Headlam Hall and the gardeners will be grateful of your comments.

We received a voucher for a Christmas for DB&B in a Spa Room. We finally got round to booking it and booked ourselves in for a Saturday night. We contacted the hotel to see if it would be possible to use the spa facilities prior to checking into our room. We have visited many Spa hotels in the area and we like to relax and enjoy the amenities on offer while we can. We were quite shocked to hear that we were not allowed to check in until 3pm regardless of if we didn’t need access to our room or not. We also were advised that we couldn’t stay in the hotel the day after to use the facilities and had to leave by 11am. This is quite unusual in my experience. It can work out very expensive enjoying a package at the hotel and only being allowed to stay for a maximum of 20 hours. I would urge the hotel to reconsider this. We would have purchased lunch and drinks from the hotel whilst we were staying for the extra time so they may be losing out.
The other negative we experienced was regarding the breakfast. On a Sunday we were advised the breakfast was served until 10am. We decided to have a late start to the day so arrived at the restaurant at 9.45. I got the feeling that we were in the way as the staff were already setting the tables for lunch. We were shown to our table and the waiter took our order. The food came promptly but while we were eating they were clearing away the section which contained the other breakfast items. So things such as the juices, pastries, yoghurts, fruit, cereals were all removed before we completed our cooked food. I understand they need to get ready for lunch but they should have surely asked if we wanted something before it was removed!

so now onto the positive things. We found the Spa room to be very comfortable. The room was spacious and very clean. The Spa although small had everything we needed and we were lucky enough to get 2 of the 6 beds on offer around the pool. The Spa staff were very attentive too. For our evening meal we had a pre drink in the bar and the excellent staff provided menus for us to browse before taking our order then taking us to the orangery. After a very short wait the food arrived. We both found the presentation and flavours very good. The portions were generous and the staff were very good. we thoroughly enjoyed the food, it was certainly a highlight of the visit. We then retired to the bar for coffees which were provided quickly. The staff were always on hand for more drinks or asking if we needed anything. Very good service

So overall our experience was good but it was a shame we couldn’t stay longer. As I explained earlier we spent over £300 for DB&B with extras which Is quite expensive for a 20 hour stay

I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food, accommodation and service during your stay but sorry that you felt that you did not have long enough to use the spa. We aim to keep the spa a tranquil environment which could be compromised if we had guests from the previous night and the coming night using the facilities at the same time.

We stayed for the 'Champagne Sunday' for my partners birthday. Our break included a half bottle of champagne on arrival, dinner with overnight stay and breakfast. The room which was in the main hall was called the 'poppy' room and was on the top floor. It was lovely, very spacious with a walk in closet, plenty of hanging space and a large 4 poster bed which was comfortable, bathroom was nice and clean. The grounds are very pleasant and well kept.
Food was good, although for myself, there was only one choice of starter and main course as I'm a vegetarian. My partner ordered a chicken starter on the recommendation of one of the waitresses which failed to come with the toasted wild rice that was supposed to accompany it so he had to ask for it but this is a minor point, the meal on the whole, was lovely. Breakfast was also very good. All in all we had a lovely break, service was excellent with a special mention going to waitresses Sam and Lisa for being so kind and helpful. We fully intend returning at some point. Just a couple of things to mention which may be helpful to people considering staying, if you have mobility problems, the top floor of the Hall may not be a good idea as there is no lift. If you are a vegetarian, there is only one vegetarian option on the menu, so if you don't like what it is, you may be a bit stuck!

Room Tip: If you like old world charm, choose a room in the main hall.

The 'Champagne Break' is a new package for selected Sundays through the summer so I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your experience. I am sorry that you found the vegetarian options limited and if you come to stay again please advise us in advance of your dietary requirements and our chefs will be happy to put on some additional choice for your stay.

Our friends booked us in for the night as we were going to the Raby Hunt for dinner (also excellent). What a beautiful hotel! Everything about it was first class. The ladies on the reception desk couldn't have been more helpful, one of them was kind enough to give us a lift to the restaurant. We'll be back soon. Thank you.

We enjoyed a lovely Spring break here last week. The hotel is perfect, beautifully appointed in a genuine traditional style. Gorgeous room in the main house complete with 4 poster bed. The food and service were exceptional. The spa is fantastic: again the staff and therapists are that perfect blend of professionalism and friendliness. We played the golf course too. We are both quite good club golfers and found the course challenging and interesting. Amazing for a short 9 hole course.
And the food..... exceptional quality, lovely ambience and yet again great service.
Returned home feeling truly relaxed and pampered. We hope that this will not be the last time we visit.

Room Tip: A room in the main house has olde world charm.

It is good to read that you enjoyed your 'Spring Revival Break' and many thanks for your comments. I am particularly pleased to hear that you enjoyed our challenging 9 hole golf course. It does catch a few people out who assume that as it is short it will be a breeze..... not the case as you point out.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights for a wedding. We booked a junior suite and were happy with the size and general conditions, with the exception of the bathroom. The bedroom was of a decent size with nice furnishings but was not cleaned well as items if rubbish had not been removed from the floor. The lounge area of the suite was well appointed with a desk, tv, small sofa etc. The bathroom however was terrible, not something that should be found in a £185 a night suite! The bath was old, there was a terrible wall hairdryer, there was mold on the ceiling and windows, cobwebs on the ceiling, cracks in the paint and hardly any room for the toilet.
This unfortunately was not the only disappointment with our stay. We also found service in the restaurant to be poor with the staff verging on rude. The quality and quantity of the breakfast was also low for such a high rating establishment.
Despite the snow the suite was still too hot and we had to resort to turning all heating off and opening windows!
The wedding we attended was however wonderful as was the food at the reception.
The spa was also great with very clean amenities and a very calm and relaxing ambiance.
I would not recommend staying here

I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed the wedding reception but sorry that you were not satisfied with your bathroom. We have actually already carried out some redecorating in that bathroom since your stay but I apologise that this was not done sooner. With regard to the temperature of the room, I think it is better to be warm on arrival as it is easier for a guest to cool a warm room than to heat a cold one.

We have now visited Headlam Hall Hotel Spa and Golf twice and are looking forward to our next visit this month!
The hotel is just amazing, everything about it in fact! The rooms, the staff, the spa, the golf, the ambience, the professionalism, the set-up and top of the charts is the FOOD! I can assure you that you will not find better food anywhere! Cooked by Dave and his team, he is a superb chef! He evens pops out when you have provided feedback - good or otherwise and he will move the earth to ensure that you and your party have a superb dining and culinary experience!
On one visit we were lucky enough to have had a private dining experience of a 7 course taster menu and it was absolutely fantastic - if ever you get the opportunity to book Dave and his team for this do not hestitate as you certainly won't be disappoined in any way! YUM YUM!!

The 9 hole golf course is great, it has it's challenges and you need to have your wits about you on several holes. There is a practice ground for chipping, a seperate putting practise area and an undercover driving range with lots of bays. I read recently that the owners are looking into extending the course to make it an 18 hole. If this plan goes ahead it will make it a real treat to play on.
The Spa is calming, as you would expect and has a lovely feel about it. The treatment rooms are well equipted and extremelty relaxing. The pool area is great and has longers down one side to relax and read. The hot tub is situated outside and is a lovely treat. There is a small bistro attached to the Spa area where you can get a range of teas, coffees, fruit juices and light lunches. Highly recommened after 18 holes of challenging golf.
The Spa rooms are a great size with tea and coffee making facilities, bath robes and slippers and just above the Spa for easy access. The rooms within the main house are varied in shape and style. The Blue Room at the top of the stairs is a small double or large single and has everything you would expect from a hotel of this quality.
The relaxing lounge has many sofas, armchairs, fresh flowers, a huge fireplace, gorgeous fabrics, panelled walls and wooden floors. The perfect place for a pre-dinner drink to study Daves' mouth watering menu.
This place is a secret haven and I just love it!

Room Tip: All rooms are good but if you want to use the Spa book a Spa Room (extra £10 pn) for easy access. A...
