“Large Hotel - Excellent Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

Stayed for 3 nights to celebrate a family wedding - the wedding was elsewhere in the area but the hotel served as a good base for the family to gather. This meant that we saw several of the rooms and stayed during quiet and very busy times.
This is a large hotel and not really "our sort of place". It was lovely during the week when it was fairly quiet, but at the weekend it got very busy due to several weddings being held - it did seem as though they catered for more than one wedding in a day, which wouldn't be my idea of an exclusive service.
At the weekend, breakfast became a bit of a scrum and service suffered due to the sheer number of people to be seated and served. On our final day we waited a long time for an anaemic cup of tea and pretty much gave up on breakfast, as it was not a relaxing experience at all.
We saw several of the rooms, and the quality is variable. If you have the option I would recommend upgrading from the standard room as several that I saw were little better than a Travel Inn. Also, think about what you want from your stay and make requests to suit you. We wanted quiet rooms away from the functions and we were accommodated but the trade-off was the rooms were fairly soul-less and quite a walk from the facilities. Other people in the party were housed in the beautiful main house, but hot rooms and more noise offset the romantic locations.
The views from the rooms are also a bit hit and miss - two couples paid the same price for the same category of room and one overlooked the beautiful grounds, another overlooked the less impressive car park!!
One thing that was universal and really stood out was the quality of the staff. They had an excellent customer manner - the right balance of friendly and professional - and tried to accommodate all of our requests. They looked after the dietary requirements of our party better than any other establishment that we have experienced – going out of their way to ensure no allergens were consumed and altering dishes where necessary.
All in all, the hotel was very good during the week but I did not feel that they could maintain their high standards of service when they got busier at the weekend. I was glad that we experienced the weekday service as otherwise this review would have been a lot less complimentary!

Room Tip: Think about what you want from your stay and make a request directly to the hotel - quiet room, char...

This really seemed like two hotels in one - a Victorian gothic main house with character and a completely modern two storey large block tacked on at the rear. There are around 40 rooms in the main house and 100 in the modern blocks to the rear. We opted to pay an extra £20 per night and stay in a "Connoisseur"" room in the main house and got a large, high ceiling pleasant room. Some family members stayed in the modern blocks and all complained of unpleasantly hot rooms with all the character of a motel.
The other weakness of this hotel is its restaurant - important because it is stuck out in the country. The dinner is average but acceptable just. The breakfast is buffet style and resembles a scrum on busy weekend mornings.
Overall it's OK - but just OK.

Very lovely hotel set in beautiful ground at an idyllic location.
From the moment we drove up to the hotel we knew we were going to love this hotel and it did not disappoint in any way.
Lots to do at the hotel if you wanted to or you could just drive in to the cotswolds.
People very friendly great service and good value. If other hotel owners want any advice they should stay here for a couple of nights.

I paid just under £49 a night on a room only basis and stayed for three nights. This made it pretty good value for money and it is hard to criticise it at all for this price seeing that the place has quite a few facilities and the surrounding grounds are pleasant.

In general the hotel seemed very well maintained with nice state rooms although as you walked out into the main accommodation area there was a small shift towards the negative as at some points the corridor carpet was threadbare. The room itself was reasonably kitted with the usual stuff and also had tea, coffee, hot chocolate and some biscuits.

However, the main thing that interested me at this place was getting sleep and this was more tricky than I expected. The first problem was that the room was hot, even with the window open and it being cold outside. I think this was due to the heat that radiated from the floor in the bathroom (I guess hot water pipes underneath). The other problem was that late at night a whirring noise started up from somewhere outside of my room and that was quite annoying. In addition whenever taps were run or toilets flushed in adjacent rooms the noise was unusually loud.

The other problem I had was that the food quality was variable. I was only eating light meals at night in their "Atrium" bar/restaurant and on the whole the food was good but little bits let it down substantially. On one night quite a lot of the chips, styled as hand cut in their menu, accompanying my burger could be described as lukewarm at best. In another meal which was a jacket potato I was surprised to get a very small potato - the accompanying salad rose higher and wider than it! Bearing in mind that the price was approx £12.50 for the burger and chips and £6.50 for the potato it seems a little bit much to not get it right and in the latter case to give a reasonable portion.

The one thing I cannot fault the hotel on is the staff. They were always cheerful, polite, attentive and helpful.

Not the first time we've stopped and not disappointed.

Location is great , staff friendly, impressive gothic style building.

Food in restaurant very good, relaxing atmosphere with lovely grounds.

Would and will stay again, especially on one of their deals.

Our weekend stay here was very nice. The hotel setting is fantastic with a great building and lovely grounds. Its location near to Bristol is great for visitors who want both the country and city within their visit.
