Monday lunches can be hard to find and so it was today. Headed to a usual haunt forgetting that it opens evenings only on Mondays so off in search of a lunch we ended up at Hawnby. It's a trek from Helmsley but well worth it. The drive is stunning, the views to die for and then we found the Inn. The table clothes told a tale that this was no Hungry Horse establishment!
A lovely greeting, in a comfortable room, a little dated here and there but pleasant enough. Good drinks were poured and the menu was very interesting. Opted away from the full lunch, the better half having a ciabatta whilst I had wild garlic and potato soup with smoked trout. Rarely do I order better than her but I won this hands down (in my eyes) not that they was anything wrong with the sandwich. It was a 10 from 10 affair. Just my soup was finer, deeper in every way. The colour was green, really green with beautifully light pink trout and plenty of it. I seem to remember cooking something similar once with a quails egg poached and placed atop a pile of smoked fish. OTT, this soup was great. We then had puddings and they too were fabulous. I can wholeheartedly recommend this establishment, for food, drinks, chat and the vista. It has rooms too and I can see why you'd want to stay!
